So, the truck was back in my neighborhood sooner than I thought. In fact, this time they were parked right across the street from my office ... how can I ignore that?! Well played, folks. :)
My wife joined me for lunch this time and agreed that the Cowgirl Tri-Tip is pretty amazing. I tried "Megan's Famous Reuben" this time (rye swirl bread, pastrami, sauerkraut, swiss, dijon, DISH secret sauce), and although I make a pretty good Reuben at home, Megan's got me rethinking my methods. I know this sounds like pure hyperbole, but this was by far the best Reuben I've had served to me at a restaurant in the West. Purists will note the substitution of pastrami for corned beef, and the schmear is considerably different than the usual fare, but that's exactly WHY this is the best Reuben I've had in recent memory.
The service was, again, fast and friendly. Someone said they might be parked in my neighborhood every Friday, so I guess I know what I'm doing for lunch at the end of each week, or at least until I make it through the whole menu. :)
THIS is what a food truck should be! I ordered the much-vaunted Cowgirl Tri-Tip Panini (Creekstone Farms Tri Tip, Caramelized Onions, Thyme, Goat Cheese, Dijon, Goat Cheese Spread, Sourdough), and was NOT disappointed. The goat cheese spread combined with dijon really compliments the other ingredients, and the tri-tip was done to perfection. Some grilled or roast beef sandwiches require that you really work to chew through the meat (a sign of improperly or hastily cooked meat), but these thin-sliced layers of tri-tip were like buttah. MMMMMMMMMM!
My order was served to me 5-10 minutes after I ordered (not exactly sure on the time, but I know I was surprised it appeared so quickly), and the bread was not soggy even though it had to sit in a container while I drove back to my office. Tasty, crispy, perfect. The small mixed green salad with homemade balsamic vinaigrette was a perfect compliment.
The price was on par with similar fare in Reno ($9); the same they charge for this sandwich at Dish Cafe. $12 for lunch is not something I can afford to do often (tax + tip), but this was a REALLY good sandwich. I'll definitely be visiting the truck again the next time it's in my neighborhood. Now if they'd just post a month's advance calendar and put out a Twitter feed, they'll be set.
Fan of food trucks? Never tried one? You really need to try the DISH Truck!
At the end of a very long and tiring day, I needed to find something to eat within walking distance of my hotel. There were dozens of tourist traps available at the nearby Anaheim GardenWalk, but none of them appealed to me. Yelp showed a couple fast food options nearby, so I started heading in that direction.
Thankfully, before I reached Del Taco, et al, I noticed this hole-in-the-wall taquería just up the street. It's part of a low-rent looking strip mall, complete with tattoo parlor, dive bar, mom & pop grocery that reeks of cleanser, etc. Ignore all that other stuff (and the ghetto exterior), because Taco's Y Pupusa's is the real deal.
I started by lurking just outside the shop, peering in at the menu wall (the usual photos of food with numbers and names), trying to decide what sounded good. The proprietor came to the door and handed me a pamphlet while exclaiming, "That's not all we have. Here's a menu!" Between this friendly invite and the array of great aromas coming from the kitchen, I knew this was the kind of family-owed place I prefer.
Mom, Dad, and at least four kids of various ages were on hand ... at 10pm! Upon inquiry I found out they're usually open pretty late, especially when there's a show going on (which there was), and the kids were mixing school homework with helping in the restaurant. I was the only customer at that moment, so I got the full attention of the entire clan. I couldn't decide what to order ... I was so hungry, everything sounded great!
I ended up ordering several pupusas (one of each variety) and a "Super Nacho Plate", mainly because it seemed to include everything on the menu in one dish. I wasn't disappointed! Dad and son went to work prepping the nachos while the oldest daughter made my pupusas fresh from scratch. Mom took my cash, and seemed almost shy about me putting the change (and more) in the tip jar.
While waiting for the food, I stepped next door to the market (pretty sketchy looking and overpriced) and bought some beer to go with my meal. As I returned to pick up my order, the whole family greeted me again, as though I was an old friend returning from far away. I don't remember the last time I felt SO welcome, even at my favorite Reno greasy spoons. I thanked them for saving my life with non-chain store food & hospitality and headed back to my hotel.
AMBROSIA! Sure, hunger is the best sauce, and I was certainly hungry, but DAMN that was some good eats! The chips stayed crunchy right to the last drop of cheese and pork, the array of homemade salsas were fresh and delicious, and the pupusas were easily the best I've ever had. The only bad thing about my new favorite taquería is that it's not located in my home town. But I definitely know where I'll be headed first the next time I'm in Anaheim!

Todd hasn't made any lists yet.
"Sounds great. When's dinner?!"

The original glorified ham & eggs will satisfy any hamsteak fan. They'll even serve a half order for the faint of heart, but I recommend going for the whole thing.
Peg's offers several Bennedicts, most of which I have tried. All were outstanding, and their hollandaise is among the best examples around.
The pancake/waffle fare was pretty tasty, although I've never ordered those for my own meal. Luckily, younger members of my family allowed me to taste them for reviewing sake. :)
The chicken fried steak is pretty good, although I still long for the best one ever (at the now-defunct South Side Cafe). This'll do in a pinch, though. The country gravy is really tasty, and the biscuits are exactly what you want to stick under that sausagey goo.
I keep meaning to order from the lunch menu, but the breakfast food is SO good, I just haven' t been able to order a sandwich or salad yet. Maybe someday.
The service at the S. Meadows and Mae Anne locations is among the best of any restaurant you'll visit. Friendly & fast!
Just remember that if you decide to do a weekend breakfast here, plan for a bit of a wait. It's worth it.
