Gen Sushi

Love Gen Sushi! What a great addition to the 'hood!

Miso soup is chock full of seaweed and bits of tofu. The fish is fresh, the rice is perfect, and the rolls are interesting. They are a bit slow for take-out, but it is totally worth the wait. Some standouts for me: Final 4, Tuna Lover's Roll, and Dynamite roll.

I will definitely be back and plan on being a regular!

Zumba With Jill

Jill, a super popular instructor at WOW gym, has taken up a space at the Acrobatic Rock n' Roll Academy in Waltham for a Saturday morning class. All are welcome! Drop-in rates are $12 or you can buy a 10 class pass for $100.

She only has the one 9:30 class on Saturdays for now and this is the perfect way to start your weekend. Jill is energetic. The music is loud. The choreography is fun. You WILL sweat! Her classes at WOW rarely have fewer than a 100 people so this smaller space is a nice change. It's not intimidating and there is a nice mix of veterans and newbies.

Check the class out and I guarantee you will be telling friends to join you the next week!

Note: There is some construction going on so the entrance to the Acrobatic Academy is inside the plywood door that leads to both the UPS store and the Academy.

Blue Ribbon Sushi

Is the best sushi in NYC? I have no idea. That would require me to try all of the sushi restaurants around, which just so happens to be a task that I am willing to work on. However, I do know that they have sushi that is well prepared, fresh, and quite tasty. The price tag for a few of the rolls was a bit too steep for what was offered but the blue crab rolls were worth the $$$. I also love that they bring you the miso on the side of your soup so you can add to your taste. Scoop it all in I say!

I don't think you will find that the sushi chefs will chat with you when you sit at the bar, but you will find excellent servers who are more than willing to answer questions and offer suggestions. Everything was timed perfectly when it came to the table and we were never left without chopsticks or too many plates.

If you aren't into waiting, go at lunch. The prices are cheaper, but the sushi is just as good!

I must have walked past Lineage about a million times and for some reason have never stopped in before. I heard from a few people that they had $1 oysters from 5-7 so I popped in last night. You have to sit at the bar for the deal folks!

We were given a fresh roll and a dozen oysters. They serve up Island Creek Oysters freshly shucked. Delish. I had an issue with shell being in quite a few of my oysters but nothing I couldn't get over. We plowed through a dozen and then moved onto the menu.

I went for the pan roasted fluke and I LOVED IT. The fish was a huge serving and everything was cooked just perfectly. My friend had the burger and seemed to really enjoy it. The winner of the whole night was the fries! They were crispy on the outside with tons of potato on the inside. Oysters and fries?! Mark me down for being there next week!

The Paint Bar

I absolutely adore the Paint Bar! Jill and Jackie have really hit the jackpot in terms of location, concept and variety of paintings. You need to sign up quickly because some of the more popular paintings (funky tree, wine, etc) tend to fill up fast!

The atmosphere is one of fun, relaxed and totally creative. Everyone is encouraged to just enjoy themselves and leave those Type A personalities at the door. Even if you don't have a creative bone in your body (or at least don't think you do!), The Paint Bar will walk you through creating your own little masterpiece. Every step is explained, but not in a way that is patronizing or overdone.

I've been to The Paint Bar twice and I fall in love each time. I wish I had more wall space so I could come back more often. Reasonably priced classes, drinks, and great supplies all make for a wonderful night.

Head down to The Local after class for some dinner to make a great night out in West Newton!

Lone Star Taco Bar

I love Deep Ellum so I was excited to give Lone Star a go. Good thing I enjoy Deep Ellum because Lone Star is the exact same vibe as next door except it has a different menu and is much darker. I love the dark bar atmosphere, but this is taking it to the extreme. I know the people next to me were excited when a towing truck showed up outside the place because they were able to get some light to see the menu.

I thought overall that the food was reasonably priced. The tostadas are a nice size and great to split a few of them with your dining partners. The only taco I had was the fish taco, which I was really disappointed in. It was basically a piece of fish with a little pickled red cabbage. My date thought the pork  and beef tacos were excellent. I wish I would have tried the tofu! The dish that stole the show for me was the corn. Excellent and totally crave worthy. Loved it!

I was a bit disappointed in our service while sitting down. The bar was on point and I have no complaints there, but at our table we had to ask for silverware twice. On several occasions our plate were on the verge of being taken away while we were still nibbling. Once they took my fork while there was clearly still food on the table. My only other complaint, and this possibly won't bother most, was that our server reeked of smoke. Not ok in a small joint like this.

I will most likely be back if I'm at Deep Ellum and craving that corn, but I highly doubt that I will wait the almost 45 minutes to eat dinner.

Elite Event: Yelp's Pop-Up Party at Sky Zone

I had no idea what to expect going into this event. Trampolines, foam pits, and dodgeball? Eh. Weren't my Chuck E Cheese days behind me? Uh. No. This was one THE best events I have attended. I bounced a ton, I sweat even more than that, and I laughed even more than that.

Big thanks to the super nice and delicious sponsors, especially Magners. Way to serve it with ice. That was like the whip cream on the sundae of a night.

I'll definitely be back to SkyZone and I'm bringing friends to kick butt at dodgeball.

I've added a star because The Local has never failed me in MANY visits. I love the food, the drinks are decently priced and the service is satisfactory.

Overall, a great addition to the neighborhood!

So glad that The Local is actually a local place for me. I've been on several occasions now and each time I'm never disappointed.

The wine and drinks are great and the food is solid and tasty. Some of the big winners for food so far have been the fried pickles, the chicken dish (it changes) and the steak tips.

The atmosphere is relaxed and casual, but feels better than being at a pub or bar.

I'm looking forward to more attempts at becoming a local at The Local!

You could easily miss Green Street if you weren't looking for it. However, you should definitely NOT miss Green Street. This hidden restaurant truly is a little gem. The bartenders are fantastic and make some great drinks. The food is a hit and several people have mentioned that this joint serves the best burger around. Their mac & cheese is killer too.

Hop into Green Street for just drinks and end up staying for dinner.

The food was great and the portions were huge! We took a chance by getting take-out from here on Christmas Eve and it was a great choice!

The food wasn't too greasy and the people working there were super friendly.

I would definitely go back if I was in the area again!
