Buy-Well Drugs of San Marino

Seriously?  What drug store offers to deliver a prescription that someone forgot to pick up.  Now that is SERVICE, spelled in all caps because of my shock and surprise!

Buy Well is friendly, helpful, priced right and perfectly convenient.  We started using them after being treated badly at Fair Oaks Pharmacy and wanting to patronize a local and family run business.

Definitely recommend highly if you live in this area.

The Tap Room

Ok, I'm upping my stars.  Hubby and I double dated to the Tap room to check out the decor for the holidays.  The bartenders were very nice and attentive and they had a nice jazz band playing.  Good times.  And of course, the lovely patio is still the main attraction.

Eeeeeeehhhhhhhh.  I liked the OLD tap room which had old school charm and ambiance.  They've kind of homogenized it.  It seems more impersonal now.  And the drinks are HELLA expensive.

One extra star for the nice patio that overlooks the south.

Charlie's Trio Bar & Grill

Update - 1/4/2012
After a remodel of the dining room, we decided to do a "dine in" which is a first for us.  If we weren't eating in the bar, pre-kids, we were taking the stuff home.  And I had CT pasta for the first time ever.  Stuffed shells.  So yum going down.  Maybe shouldn't have eaten so much cheese though!  Great service, especially since we had the munchkins and they can be pretty annoying in a restaurant.  All in all a good time was had by all!

There is always a Dodger game on at Charlie's Trio.  I have only ever eaten in the bar.  The waitresses aren't good.  They take forever.  But the food is excellent.  Pizza is very good and fresh, the steaks are charbroiled and yummy and the salmon is delish.  Bartenders are always super nice too.  We take out their pizza often and are never disappointed.

Fabiolus Cafe

I can't believe I have never reviewed Fabiolus. I think I have been here a million times since I work across the street.  I am always satisfied after a trip to Fabio's place!  I love that they greet you when you walk through the door, treat everyone as a friend.

Today I had lunch there with the lunch sampler (something new that I just discovered).  It came with a bruscetta, filet of sole, mashed potatoes and gnocchi.  Not something I would normally order because of all the carbs, but I have a cold and it was very comforting.  Everything tasted delicious, despite my dulled taste buds.  The sole was the best!

My old standbys here are the sandwiches (great bread) especially the caprese sandwich, the salads (love the lemon vinegarette), the calamari, the bolognese, penne alla vodka and the fish.  The table bread is light and crispy and the olive tapanade is a nice touch.  Good ice tea too.  Trust me, there is such a thing as bad ice tea!

Recently, they remodeled the restaurant making the inside light and bright with added windows and an additional front side patio, in case you want to watch a bunch of Hollywood types walk by or breathe in the car exhaust.  I prefer the back covered patio to dine al fresco.

Make sure you say hi to the owner, he is so nice and very friendly!

Bonsoir Nails

My regular nail joint was closed on MOnday.  I was so so sad to see a sign on the door that is usually wide open.  Boo hooooooo.  So I came to Bonsoir, which I have tried once before.  They weren't busy so I sat right down for a pedicure.

First off the place is tiny.  Beware, it's a bit cramped.  I'm use to a big spacious room with room between chairs so I don't feel like someone is all up in my business while I play Angry Birds and get my legs massaged!

I liked the chair though, a good massage chair is hard to find and I felt like I was getting a real back rub.  Nice.  Water was warm, toes were attended to in a gentle manner, short leg scrub and rub.  I bring my own polish so that I can do touch ups later and so I don't have an opinion on their selection.

All in all it was a good pedicure.  Looked very nice walking out and still does two days later.  I would go back....if my usual place is closed.

Mijares Mexican Restaurant

I'm a firm believer that margaritas and mexican food make everything better.  Sharing both with good friends makes for a wonderful night.

We spent last Friday at Mijares with 4 friends.  While waiting in the bar I sipped on my delicious pomegranite margarita.  It tasted so good going down.  Not too sweet.  We also munched on chips.  My hubby, the salsa snob, said he liked the salsa.

The group of us sat...one downside, the patio tables are short.  I mean, barely above the knees which I thought was weird.  But we decided not to complain and just go with it.  The service was ok, not super fast but we weren't in a hurry and they were packed so again, we went with it.  If I was with my kids, I probably would have been more concerned that the service was slow.  At least they kept the chips and margaritas flowing!

I had the mahi mahi.  Grilled, with pineapple salsa on top.  Very well cooked.  Just the right amount of seasoning and salsa.  Yummy yellow rice (different from what comes with the combos) and steamed veggies.  It was a nice departure from my regular order in a Mexi joint of tacos or tamales.  My friend to the lefft had the chile verde and she was yumming the whole time.  Hubby had the enchiladas that he enjoyed.

All in all a very satisfying meal.  Sounds like we should be going back for the breakfast some time...

Brookside Park

Brookside Park has a lot to offer...I've played softball here, visited the Kidspace museum, gone to numerous festivals as well.  But the best part is the hidden gem behind the aquatic center.  There is a large playground called Reese's retreat.

This is the coolest playground.  My kids beg to go to "Pirate Park" all the time.  The play structure is huge and built like a big pirate ship.  There are slides, planks to walk, periscopes, chain ladders, cannons, lots of sea creatures to ride, a "shake area," two swing sets and a place to build sand castles and have a little water play.  All in all, this is one of the best playgrounds I've been to.

If you get a chance, take a walk around the rose bowl after to get some exercise or have a picnic lunch on one of the numerous tables.

After my chiropractor retired to open a cheese store (I kid you not), I needed to find someone stat after injuring myself in a triathlon (I kid you not).  My sister recommended Dr. Brian.  MIRACLE WORKER!

I visited him and within two visits my terribly painful neck and shoulder were feeling 90% better.  I have continued to see him for a flare up of bursitis (NO...I'm not 70) and his treatment has gotten it under control enough for me to continue my training.  He really has been amazing.

Dr. Brian and his wife have a nice office, always super clean, spacious, good music.  And I enjoy the Doc's dry sense of humor.  He always makes me laugh.  The only downside is he doesn't take insurance.

Bottom line, if you need a chiro, go here immediately.

Lazy Ox Canteen

We had finished getting tipsy at the Far Bar and were craving something sweet... it was Recommended that we trip down to the Lazy Ox for drinks and dessert.  Well, we ended up sharing a meal too.  Fish over a edamame succotash.  t was delish.  But of course, I was a bit drunk.

We sat outside on the patio.  The inside was hoppin' and also very loud.  I think this is not the place for a romantic evening.  the ouside tables were high tops so not conducive to cuddling up and sharing food.

After eating the meal, I heard her say butterscotch pudding and my mouth started to water.  It was so sweet, like dulce de leche and I probably could have eaten a batch of it....but I restrained myself.  (Although secretly I really really wanted to order a second, it was that good.)  "Step away from the pudding, woman!"

I would like to go back here sober.  I don't say that often, but in this case it's true.

I'm so thrilled that I left the 24 hour fitness far far behind after 17 years of membership.  Even though my price was cheap, it had become very inconvenient as there isn't one near where I live.   Everyone I know goes to the Y so I decided to cash in a free week and check in out.

It's totally a bare bones gym.  No TVs, no Hollywood models making me feel inferior, no Crunch.  You gotta just want to WORK OUT.  Which is why I joined.

And I've never once had to wait for a machine.  NEVER ONCE.  That is why I like the Y so much.  At the 24 hour in Hollywood, I always had to wait.  So refreshing to just walk in and start running.

I used the pool to train for my tri and it is clean  and well maintained.  It gets crowded though in lane swim sessions.  The locker room is decent but not great...they are doing improvements before the end of the year (2011).  They have a great classes room and a spin room.  I haven't taken any classes but I plan to in the new year.

Overall, the facilities are decent.  But the best feature is the on staff fitness counselor who will help you with everything from a work out plan to motivational emails - all included in your monthly fees.
