More ramen!

Changes for 2012 - This month Nombe got a new chef: Noriyuki Sugie, and new lunch service was added this week. Ramen (and mini donburi for $2-$3 each) during lunch. http://s3-media2.ak.ye...

Not many people know about it yet. There was just one other customer when I dropped by for lunch this week. http://s3-media3.ak.ye...

This is the first beef ramen in SF. 4 choices of meats: oxtail, short rib, beef tongue, and beef cheek. There's a veggie version too. Not many choices for extra toppings.

I got the oxtail ramen ($10), and added a soft boiled egg and corn ($1 each). http://s3-media3.ak.ye... Notice the white bubbles on top? that's a Umami foam, the chef's special touch - it didn't make much taste difference to me. The Hanjuku egg (soaked in soy sauce and mirin) has the typical jewel-like jellied yolk. http://s3-media4.ak.ye...

Noriyuki's "Ramen Bull" lunch hours: Tue-Fri 11:30am - 2pm
Closed Mondays.

Note: For now, the old ramen recipes (tantan-men, tonkotsu, miso) are available for dinner and weekend brunch, not the beef ramen. I'll update when that changes in the future.

3.5 stars, because the topping portions I got were modest, and I wish there was an option to add more meat.

** Update **

4 stars!!
The DAT combo is awesome - offer ends January 31. U get your pick of beef ramen loaded with all the toppings, mini donburi (5 choices) and drink (beer or housemade soda) for $17.95; http://s3-media4.ak.ye... Happy the topping portions were more generous this time, and I definitely recommend the beef cheeks.

The owner also told me that the beef ramen will be added to the dinner menu soon, replacing Mari's miso ramen. They're keeping the old tonkotsu and tantan-men.

Just a PSA, for anyone who doesn't know that Queen's LPB Cafe is not open during the holidays. They're on holiday vacation this month, and will reopen in January 3, 2012. http://s3-media4.ak.ye...

I love dishes like red beans & rice ($3.50 half pint, $6.95 pint), jambalaya  ($3.49 half pint, $6.49 pint), and most people already know that they make excellent gumbo ($4.99 cup, $8.99 bowl). Fried food platters (chicken, snapper, catfish, or shrimp for $6.99-$10.99), and po-boys ($6.49-$10.99). Not exactly cheap, but most prices are reasonable. The best deal is the Fat Tuesday's fried chicken special: $1.99 for a wing & thigh combo.

New lunch spot for the FiDi crowd, just one block away from the Naked Lunch sandwich shop. http://s3-media3.ak.ye...

2 vendors share one spot: ramen and creole/cajun food. http://s3-media2.ak.ye...

The dining area has a TV in the back. http://s3-media1.ak.ye... Get water, utensils and napkins from the self service area. http://s3-media1.ak.ye...

Only 2 ramen choices ($10): tonkotsu or Sapporo-style miso. Additional toppings are $1, and extra chasu pork for $2. http://s3-media3.ak.ye...

There's also a daily special, yesterday was pork curry over rice ($8), todays it's unagi donburi.

The ramen vendor is a super friendly husband and wife team: Leo and Febry G. She told me that their chasu and broths are made with organic meat from Marin Sun Farms.

I got the tonkotsu ramen. http://s3-media3.ak.ye... Every bowl has chasu pork, chives, kikurage, sliced fish cake, bean sprouts, and a soft boiled egg. http://s3-media3.ak.ye... The broth has good flavor (like homemade soup, not Santouka-style), and it's not too fatty. It was a very satisfying meal for a chilly day.

The creole/cajun vendor's menu changes daily. He always has vegetarian and vegan options. I've tried the red beans and rice before, it was delicious. This time I got a takeout order of turkey, shrimp and Andouille sausage gumbo, and the B+B - a li'l spicy vegetarian dish of buttered corn, black beans, with onions and cheese over rice. http://s3-media4.ak.ye... All orders include 2 slices of buttered and spiced bread.

Hours:
M-F noon-2:30pm, 6-9pm. Sat noon-9 or 10pm
(creole/cajun vendor is lunch time only, M-F)

Passion Cafe - CLOSED

Category: French
Neighborhoods: Civic Center/Tenderloin, SOMA

Update - 11/22/2011 15 photos
Passion Cafe is CLOSING. The space inside is pleasant, and the secluded 2nd floor is still beautiful. But after a year I expected more improvements. The menu didn't change much, and food execution by the new kitchen staff (original slow French chef was replaced by quicker latino staff) was subpar. So food quality went downhill, compared to when it opened.

Sadly, the place was robbed twice, and the owner was assaulted by one of the robbers one morning in May. Here's the link to story about the assault (warning: pics of injured bloody owner Steve B.). http://www.bluoz.com/b... Yes, the robber was caught. But the accumulated problems were too much, that's why they've decided to rent the restaurant space.

Dottie's True Blue Cafe will be moving into the space in mid-December.

I'm not sure how well that will work. Or IF the number of tourists would decline or not, since this is farther away from all the Union Square tourist hotels.

The area around 6th street had improved a lot from what it was decades ago. But now it seems like the gentrification (with expensive restaurants) is attracting more pickpockets and thieves. Looking at recent SF crime data (in the link, u can zoom into any area, and choose any date period) http://sanfrancisco.cr.../ it appears that the concentration of muggings on 6th street has increased.

Another addition to the 6th street corridor for those who are intrepid enough to visit this gritty area. In truth, after +15 years several factors including more frequent street cleaning and random police patrols have shifted most crime north to the TL area, so you don't need to be a tough guy/gal to come here. The days of daytime violence and robberies with Uzi submachine guns are long gone (I'm not kidding).

New owners of eateries that pop in this area seem to bring alot of feelings and emotions. First we got "Seduction..." from the Split Pea soup place down the block, and now we get "Passion..." from this new French cafe.

The decor inside is lovely, a great place to enjoy a relaxed lunch or dinner. Service is very friendly and the food I sampled so far was wonderful (my favorite item was the salmon quiche). Prices are moderate (most under $10, daily special was $13.75), it's traditional French cuisine (ie. quiche, tartine, onion soup, etc.) similar to what you'd find at Cafe Claude, although for now the menu is very short. One of the nicest features is the upstairs roof top deck/ dining area (stairs are located behind the bar).

When I came in the credit card system was not working yet, but they can still manually process your card. The staff did fine for a first day, I hope that they can keep up with orders when it becomes busy. They are still developing the menu as well as the hours, I was told that tonight they close at 7pm or 8pm but longer hours are planned. So expect to see menu changes as this place evolves.

In my opinion, it's a welcome addition to this area. Being able to sit down to enjoy a peaceful meal in this area is fantastic. Way better than the overpriced $8 hot dogs at Showdogs on Market street.

I can imagine that the theater crowd will LOVE having this new dining option. My rating is 4.5 stars rounded up to 5 stars.

Ramen Parlor

More ramen in San Mateo!

There are more than 10,000 ramen shops in Tokyo alone. Some are cheap 500 yen ramen huts, some are traditional, there are many regional styles, and some are trendy shops with new blends. The Bay Area doesn't have that type of variety yet. So I'm happy to see a new place that brings the latest modern ramen trend from Japan.

Yes, same owner as Santa and nearby Dojo. Ramen Parlor http://s3-media1.ak.ye... is different from all other Bay Area ramen shops, it specializes on modern style ramen with a seafood accent. I don't care what snobs say, this ramen is excellent.

It's different from any ramen you might have tried before. All the broths are enriched/unfiltered (murky), pick your choice of soy sauce, miso, or pork (tonkotsu). Every bowl ($9.50) has a layer of lobster oil, 1 quail egg, 2 sliced pork belly chasu, 1 green leaf lettuce, 1 broccolini, chopped raw white onions, bacon bits, green chives, kikurage (wood ear mushrooms), sliced shiitake mushrooms, and 1 shrimp on the shell.

Additional toppings costs $1-$4.50, and extra noodles are $1.50 more.

I got the pork broth with lobster oil. http://s3-media2.ak.ye... I really enjoyed this style of ramen. And I disagree with comments about making any changes or taking stuff out.

The ingredients work best combined. I think that some people don't understand that u don't try the lobster oil or raw onions by itself. As u eat the noodles the oil and broth blends together, and the hot broth will cook the raw onions just right.

The lunch menu only has a few appetizers: edamame, an egg roll, 2 salads, and a creme brulee dessert. In contrast, the dinner menu has many more choices, like yakitori, fried appetizers, sliced meats (pork cheek meat $7.50, venison $7.95) http://s3-media4.ak.ye... and special desserts.

The chicken karaage ($6.95) was everyone's favorite appetizer. http://s3-media3.ak.ye...

So far all the yakitori ($1.95-$3.25) I've sampled was well prepared and delicious! I've tried the kalbi and beef tongue (favorite!), http://s3-media2.ak.ye... chicken hearts, http://s3-media3.ak.ye... chicken knuckles (cartilage, not everyone likes this), and beef tripe. http://s3-media3.ak.ye...

Note: On the yakitori menu, it says "Abomasum" for the English translation, that's incorrect. It should say "beef tripe" (Mino in Japanese).

KoJa Kitchen

My first encounter with the KoJa Kitchen truck was at OTG. http://s3-media3.ak.ye... The name KoJa = Korean-Japanese, refers to both the food theme and the ethnic background of some team members.

For now, the menu http://s3-media3.ak.ye... is short. They said they'd add other dishes in the future, and not everything will be Korean-Japanese.

There's 3 menu items: the KoJa ($5, a "sandwich" that uses toasted rice patties - choice of beef, chicken or vegetarian patty), kamikaze fries ($6), and a dessert, the "mochi-misu" ($4) http://s3-media3.ak.ye... - a tiramisu with little globs of housemade chocolate mochi hidden between the layers. I loved it!

I got the Koja combo with beef ($11.50), which includes a drink. http://s3-media1.ak.ye... The sliced Korean BBQ beef in the KoJa was super juicy and tender, and the rice patties absorbed those juices well. Delicious stuff!

They get extra points because of the super friendly service. I thought that it would take them a while to make the food, so I went to look for a seat to eat my dessert first. My order was ready faster than I thought. Somehow a girl from the truck found me, and brought the food to me. Wow! I was impressed, that was amazing service for a food truck.

Nom Nom Truck

Nom Nom is probably one of the most famous food truck names (thanks to a TV show) u can find in the city, other than the Chairman Bao truck. I was surprised to see one of the owners, Marisa C. working inside the truck. She must travel a lot between SF & LA to supervise all her food trucks.

The menu is simple: banh mi ($6.50) and tacos ($2.50) with your choice of pork, chicken or tofu. There's a deli special banh mi for $7.50.

The specials last week were vegan mushroom pate and Vietnamese iced coffee.

The food is made to order so u need to wait a few minutes at the pickup window. http://s3-media3.ak.ye... I got the $10 combo, with a chicken banh mi http://s3-media4.ak.ye... + a pork taco, http://s3-media3.ak.ye... and a drink.

Although it's true that the Nom Nom trucks in LA charge $5 for banh mi, and $8 for the combo. I don't think that people should compare Nom Nom to prices of hole in the wall banh mi shops in SF, Oakland and San Jose. Those shops are family operated so they don't have the expense of employee salaries, the meat is not the same quality, and most use a cheap generic bread. Compare that to Nom Nom's custom bread.

Also consider that the food trucks have to pay 10% of their sales to the OTG organizer. And that doesn't include the cost of annual permit fees they pay to the city.

In my opinion, if it's reasonable to pay $6.50 for an American style sandwich, then Nom Nom's banh mi prices should be okay too.

I came here a few weeks ago for lunch. http://s3-media1.... That's when I saw Kare-Ken across the street during construction, which I recently reviewed too.

The interior dining space is narrow, but feels comfy and pleasant. http://s3-media3.... Place your orders at the counter, then wait for your takeout, or find a seat to dine-in. And they'll bring the food to your table when ready. http://s3-media3.... The big menu board http://s3-media4.... can be a bit overwhelming. It's easier to lookup items by categories: appetizers, salads, pies, wraps, plates, and desserts.

Basically the regular meat choices are kebabs (meat cubes) and shawarma - that's meat sliced from a rotating rod (chicken, lamb & beef, or a combo of both). Served in a wrap similar to a burrito, or a plate with rice and salad.

Don't forget to check the daily specials (changes weekly) handwritten on a white erase board on the right side wall, next to the counter.

I got the roasted chicken special ($6.99) for takeout. The meat was very moist and the crispy skin with spices was delicious (better than Goood Frikin Chicken), don't know if it was brined. Portions are generous, I got enough for 2 people. My takeout hot food container had half a chicken (freshly reheated on the grill). And a container with rice, bulgur wheat, salads, plus a bag with bread slices and 2 dipping sauces: yogurt and garlic. http://s3-media4.... The staff was very attentive and helpful during my visit, seems like they wanted to make sure they get repeat business from happy customers.

I noticed a few plates (whole fried bream fish, etc.) not listed in the menu, at the bottom of the display case with salads, dolmas, hummus, etc. http://s3-media1.... Don't know their prices.

As soon as I saw the handmade phyllo desserts (top trays), I had to buy some. Good baklava - 3 types: pistachio, walnuts, ($1.75 each) and rolled fingers filled with ground cashews ($1.25 each). http://s3-media1.... I haven't tried the pies or the lahmayun yet (bottom trays).

The kunafe/kunafa dessert (toasted noodle-like layer with mild cheese inside) - on the menu says $7, but the staff explained that price was for a mini tray. They had smaller ones for $3.50 each, so I bought one. http://s3-media2.... This was one of the best versions I've tried in the city.

All the desserts are meant to be consumed immediately, otherwise they get soggy (from syrup of bottom layer). If so, place on aluminum foil and reheat in a toaster. Be careful not to burn it.

    Hours: daily 11:30am - 1am (Thu-Sat until 2am).

OTG 2nd Street
Schedule: temporary spot, only 2 food trucks.
Hours: M-F 11am-2pm

This week a new temporary mini OTG debuted on 2nd street, near Folsom. http://s3-media2.ak.ye... 2 different food trucks are featured each weekday. Good news for the nearby offices lunch crowd.

This food truck spot will continue for a few months into next year, while the building owners are constructing a new retail area http://s3-media2.ak.ye... and renovating the plaza. http://s3-media3.ak.ye... It's on the same block where Maya restaurant went out of business, and both Snack Depot & Tully's were displaced by the construction work.

Note that unlike other regular OTG events, there are no chairs here. The outdoors dining space near the building belongs to Lee's Deli.

The McRib is back! (until Nov. 14)

The Golden Gate Park area in front of this McD's was the favorite hangout of drug addicts who dumped their used needles in the park for years. That is now in the past, after the city remodeled the surrounding area. Although many homeless still like to loiter around this restaurant.

The addition of a farmers market on Wednesdays, OTG food trucks on Thursdays, and the new Whole Foods market across the street has really improved this area. So it's a bit cleaner and less smelly, compared to years ago.
