Moonshine Patio Bar & Grill

Categories: American (Traditional), Southern, Breakfast & Brunch
Neighborhood: Downtown

5 star rating

Moonshine is "comfort food" at it's best.  Because we were a larger group without a reservation we had to wait about an hour for our table.  This wasn't bad because the bar was pretty open and we could hang out while waiting.  The drink menu is pretty extensive and they have a number of "signature" drinks.

Their menu is simple and direct.  They give you a number of options of sides to choose from.  For an interesting twist, in addition to the typical bread they bring out some fresh popped buttered popcorn.

Our group had a wide range of foods - nothing bad was said about it.  And of course, the Mac & Cheese, a signature side, was delicious.  I'm waiting for an excuse to head back.

Stubb's Bar-B-Q

At first I was skeptical to head to Stubb's given that I had never been to Austin and Stubb's was the only place I knew - usually that means overpriced and under-delivered.  Not so.

Stubb's Texan BBQ is good.  I can't say it's the best since I haven't tried many, but it does not disappoint.  The sides are delicious and the atmosphere is great.  This place definitely surprised me given the "tourist trap" mentality that some people also alluded to.

Check it out - it may not be the best, but it's worth it.

Aster's Ethiopian

Categories: Ethiopian, Vegetarian

3 star rating

Aster's is a little outside of downtown, but came highly recommended by Yelp'ers as a vegetarian option.  After walking into a pretty empty restaurant I got a little worried.  Then I realized it was a Tuesday night.

The service was prompt and, despite being a no frills restaurant the food was good.  We were well attended to and the fast service was great.

There are plenty of options on the menu, so there should be something for everyone - even first time Ethiopian restaurant goers.  While I haven't tried other Ethiopian places in town, this is definitely worth another trip.

Enrico's Ristorante

I always walked by Enrico's and looked intrigued.  The space is beautiful, right next to a laundromat. I purchased a coupon for it but never found a night it was going to work when the were open (they are closed on Sundays.)

Finally we broke down and made it and enjoyed their fresh food. The food was great and just what I wanted.  Great Italian food in a warm and inviting place.

I had been meaning to get to Dish for some time, I heard only good things from my friends.  After we left I was kicking myself for taking so long to finally get there.

Dish is a great restaurant with a full fantastic menu and amazing ambiance.  The food was perfectly cooked and the waitstaff had excellent advice. I can't wait to go back for more.

Richard Chen - CLOSED

I've been to Richard Chen a few times now, first during the "soft" opening then after the official opening.  It exceeded my exceptions every time.

The is something new which is good, a number of places are pretty much the same.  Also, unlike a number of "celebrity chef" restaurants Richard Chen actually makes it a point to make some of the meals - he greeted us the first time we were there.

Having grown up in DC but being in school out of the city I didn't get out in the city much.  The couple of times I've been home and been to Tabaq I've been impressed.  The staff has been nice and accommodating. The view is nice on the rooftop and the drinks are strong.

I've enjoyed my time there and look forward to going back when I am home despite the high prices.

Coffee Tree Roasters the

Category: Coffee & Tea

2 star rating

Coffee Tree offers a number of different places to sit - the open coffee shop with the huge garage doors or back by the fire on the couches.  The coffee is okay, nothing special.

But if you want to sit outside without being outside this is the place.  The internet is now "free" for an hour so long as you buy something and the staff will readily give you a code whenever you buy something.

As some of the other reviewers have pointed out, you may find it difficult to get a seat.

Buffalo Blues

Categories: Restaurants, Sports Bars

4 star rating

Living down the street of Buffalo Blues has it's advantages and disadvantages.  The huge beer selection means there is something for everyone.  For any game there is always a crowd and you can have a good time eating the wings, which are decently priced and good.

The bar is nice in the summer when they open the garage doors.  It's a nice bar to get a beer with friends where you can grab a table to eat then hang out at the bar to watch the game.  But, while they have a good number of HD TVs, only two are broadcast in HD so don't think you'll be getting a great picture.

Pizza Sola

Category: Pizza

3 star rating

Pizza Sola's East End location is the new outpost of the south side pizza place of the same name.  The pies and slices are big, but you are still paying a pretty penny for them.  The toppings are sometimes light but overall it's a good pizza.

Be warned the pizza is always hot - watch out.
