Barbecue Inn
Categories: Diners, Barbeque
Neighborhood: Independence Heights
It's a very simple place. Nothing cluttered or fancy. The menu is limited to the basics of barbecue, friend items, steak and seafood. The salads are iceberg lettuce and tomato. It's just a good, family restaurant.
Recently, I had the half chicken with delicious, smoky baked beans and potato salad, which was not my favorite. My friend had their chicken fried steak, which many seem to think is the best in town.
I finished with a slice of cheesecake that was out of this world.
Reasonable prices, friendly staff that knows many of the customers by name, the familiar old school ring of a big telephone with orders coming in from the neighborhood and healthy portions of delicious food. Barbecue Inn is comfort food in every sense of the word.

Brothers Pizza
Category: Pizza
Neighborhood: Greenspoint
I hadn't been in years and went back a few years ago. Brother's LOOKED exactly the same and the pizza was just as perfect as I remembered. I swear some of the original guys were still there.
I've since been back a couple times and their pizza is my favorite in town. I was in NYC twice this past year and nothing I've had in Houston comes as close to simulating those giant, perfectly greasy slices of pizza in a New York pizza kitchen as Brother's.
Plus, it's CRAZY cheap. Oh, and try the calzones. They are out of this world.

Cedar Creek
Categories: Bars, American (Traditional), Burgers
Neighborhood: The Heights
Frankly, I liked the cozy atmosphere better than both of the others. Nice chairs, which, in my opinion, is an overlooked amenity. It was quieter than Onion and the whole place is about the size of Onion and Dry combined.
I had a cheeseburger and fries, which was very good. The burger wasn't over seasoned and it came with plenty of fixings and a six pack holder full of condiments, napkins and utensils. The fries were a little too seasoned for my taste, but that's really just an opinion.
Cedar doesn't have the charm or people watching of Onion Creek and it's a little slower on delivery than Dry Creek, but the food is good and the atmosphere is nice, plus I doubt it will ever be as packed as either of the others, which is handy when you just want to sit on your computer and surf the internet, which is what I'm doing while writing this. I'll be back.

Sandy's Produce Market
Categories: Coffee & Tea, Fruits & Veggies, Health Markets
Neighborhood: Energy Corridor
Sandy's is part healthy grocery store, part antique store, part buffet-style eatery inside a warehouse style shop sandwiched between a Cavendar's Boot City and a Teachers' Heaven - Not Just for Teachers store (WTH?) off I-10 and Dairy Ashford.
I didn't really look around the grocery store, so I'll leave that out of my review.
The food is served in several scattered little buffet areas: hot foods like mashed potatoes, grilled zucchini, roasted chicken, bean soup, corn, etc.; breads like bagels and toast with jams, peanut butter and jelly; a salad bar packed with healthy fresh veggies and fruit; a dessert are with organic cakes and such; and a drink cart with teas and water.
There is also a roaming tea cart that comes by your table to offer you different kinds of hot tea.
The food I had was all delicious and very fresh. I particularly liked the egg salad and the tasty green tea. I had a bite of the carrot cake, which was fantastic.
The setting is odd with antique tables and chairs strewn throughout a large area in the back corner of the store rather haphazardly. It's quaint if a little strange. The staff is polite and friendly.
The only drawback I felt was that it was a little confusing in the way it was laid out and there wasn't an explanation for how to pay (they bring a bill to your table and you pay at the front just like you would if you bought groceries), which would've been off putting had I not gone with someone who had been previously.
Other than that, it was a really good and unique experience. I'll definitely go back.

I love the family atmosphere of this place. Good chips and salsa, good solid dishes and nice, friendly staff.
Their signature dishes are particularly interesting and their seafood is outstanding. The menu is large and diverse, so you'll have plenty of options and can go back often without trying everything.

Cafe Pita +
Category: Mediterranean
Neighborhood: Westchase
I only recently discovered how much joy I take from the food of eastern Europe and am still in mourning over the loss of Cafe Montrose, so this was perfect timing.
I started with the fried cheese, which was crispy and salty and served with a delicious red pepper sauce. My entree was the burek, which is a puff pastry pita stuffed with your choice of beef, potato, spinach/cheese or cheese. I went with the beef and was not disappointed (though I'll definitely try the potato next time!).
This thing is giant - the size of the bottom of Yao Ming's shoe sliced in half. The flaky crust on the outside is a perfect balance for the hearty, well seasoned beef mixture inside. They serve it with the red pepper sauce and a wonderfully decadent butter/cheese mixture. ANYONE who combines butter and cheese and serves it with meat and bread is a friend of mine.
My friend had the cevap, which is like a pita sandwich with pita bread and sausage links made from lamb and beef. I liked these even more than my pita and mooched accordingly.
The service was friendly if only a tad bit slow, which was fine since it gave us time to eat all that and the soft, airy bread they brought out in a big basket before the meal. I didn't get the chance to try dessert since I barely made it through a third of my pita, but the dessert menu looks awfully tasty. Next time...and there will most definitely be a next time.

Chuy's
Category: Mexican
Neighborhoods: Upper Kirby, River Oaks
But, this may be one of the most annoying restaurants to visit in Houston unless you go at a really off peak time of the day. If you go during lunch, dinner, anytime Saturday or brunch Sunday, expect a wait...a LONG wait, and the parking is seriously awful as well.
It is incredibly loud inside as you might imagine given the number of people that pack the bar. Even getting to go food during peak hours is a thankless chore.
For me, the food just wasn't worth the effort required to get it, but I'm pretty lazy about things like that, so if you have the patience of Job and are dying for some of that green sauce, go get in line.
So, in a city filled with really good Mexican eateries, why go to a chain like Lupe Tortilla? Because they have the best fajitas in town, period.
I can't vouch for everything they have on the menu, but if you want great fajitas, this is the place. They come to you with a mountain of sides and giant, warm tortillas that I usually fold in half before piling the fajitas on them.
The prices are a little more chain-like than eating at a neighborhood restaurant, but they aren't ridiculous and the fajitas alone are worth it.

Arlene's Grocery
Categories: Karaoke, Music Venues
Neighborhood: Lower East Side
The bar side had a nice fire going and people sitting around chatting. it was a good escape from the loud music side and I would imagine a cool place to hang on a Friday or Saturday night.
The music side was well organized with good backline gear. The sound guy was FANTASTIC. Our live recordings from that show are the best from our entire trip and he was incredibly helpful from holding a parking space for us right out front to providing us with excellent monitor mixes.
Being on the lower east side made it a tad sketchy, but, overall, it was a great experience. We'll definitely go back.

It's situated just east of Conroe High School on Hwy 105 (just a couple blocks off of I 45) in an old Waffle House. The interior has been re-designed and it probably sits about 50 people or so. It's only been open since July and serves breakfast lunch and dinner (I believe dinner only on weekends), but breakfast seems to be their specialty.
The staff including the owners (one of whom has owned restaurants in Maui and San Francisco) were very friendly and the whole place was clean and looked nice, but it's not a fancy or stuffy place at all.
The breakfast menu was loaded with unique choices made from nearly all fresh organic products. But this is not some health food place. I had the Fisherman's Skilled which was a massive helping of breakfast potatoes, grilled onions, tomatoes, eggs (cooked how you want them), fresh grilled shrimp and blue crab smothered in delicious hollandaise sauce and mozzarella with a choice of bread on the side.
All of their dishes have unique pairings and offer choices of potatoes, black beans or rice. My dining partner had a Spinach Feta Omelette that had fresh wilted spinach and mushrooms alongside breakfast potatoes.
Frankly, it took me a while to decide what I wanted because of the large selection of eggs, waffles, pancakes, omelettes, skillets and Mexican fare on the menu.
All the food was fantastic and expertly prepared. The seasoning was very light and allowed the flavors of the obviously fresh ingredients to come through. My Fisherman's Skillet was out of this world and only $8!!! Everything on the menu was under $10, a bargain for brunch of this caliber. The entire meal with coffee was under $25.
The ONLY drawback is that this place is in Conroe, not in Houston. If they had a place in Houston, the line would be out the door and I would be in line virtually every day. Can't wait to go back.
