Alice's Tea Cup Chapter II

Categories: Breakfast & Brunch, American (New)
Neighborhood: Upper East Side

3.0 star rating
2/4/2007
I normally despise anything cutesy, fairy tale-ish, or tacky, but I found Alice's Teacup to be a charming little spot that doesn't try too hard. Located steps from Central Park, ATC is a great destination for brunch and lunch. I recall the bacon and eggs for brunch being very tasty, as well as the ham and cheese sandwich for lunch on another occasion.

The prices are a little higher than they should be (the fare is pretty standard) and the portions are quite small, but considering the eatery's proximity to Central Park, it's to be expected. Check out the surprisingly well-decorated bathroom while you're there!

Rain - CLOSED

I dined here once a few years ago, when the reality television show I was working for needed background extras for a dinner scene. I and fellow production staff members were provided free meals (one of the (few) perks of working on a dating show).

I'm fairly certain I ordered a dish with chicken with cashews (not that it was unmemorable; I just have a bad memory). Regardless, I recall it was very tasty and our server was pleasant. If you are looking for a lovely, romantic dinner destination near Central Park, Rain could be your place; the space is very large and is likely conducive to large groups as well.

I love hanging out in bars where the walls are lined with books, because it makes me feel more like a responsible person and less of an irresponsible drunk.

Oh, um, I mean, because the scholarly vibe is a nice change of pace from typical NYC bars. Library is a great little bar with inexpensive drinks, a good jukebox, video games and trivia (!!!), and bizarre films projected in the back. It's usually packed, but there is generally enough floor/table space to accomodate everyone. Highly recommended.

I highly recommend visiting La Locanda for dinner and a glass of wine. Dim, pretty lighting; plenty of space; extremely attentive wait staff; excellent food (fresh, reasonably-priced, large portions). The restaurant is well-liked, but the few times I've been there, it was never packed or noisy, which was nice.

Negatives: Crowds, frat boys, sorority girls, raucous after-work crowd, bridge and tunnel, unattentive bartenders, deafening music, obnoxious drunks, people stumbling into you.

Positives: (Crickets chirping).

Virgin Megastore - CLOSED

Category: Music & DVDs
Neighborhoods: Midtown West, Theater District

3.0 star rating

I visit Virgin Megastore for two reasons: 1) to buy last-minute birthday and holiday gifts for friends, and 2) to kill time before or after a movie at one of the nearby theaters. But generally, I try to avoid this area at all costs.

The store is convenient, it's huge, and you can usually find what you are looking for (surprisingly, they carry a lot of rare CDs, vinyl, books, and DVDs). The tourists, noisy teenagers, and crowds can be exasperating, but it's Times Square, so they're to be expected. Virgin often has great sales on CDs and DVDs, but if you're looking to stock up on interesting, reasonably-priced albums, I recommend supporting one of the independent record shops downtown (or, the small and charming Future Legend, which is roughly in the same neighborhood as Virgin Megastore).

Kevin St James - CLOSED

Like Social, Latitude, and the other bars on the same stretch of Eight Avenue, Kevin St. James attracts enormous crowds, both on weeknights and weekends. The service is nothing to write home about; the mixed drinks are often watery; the music can be deafening; and waiting ten deep in a crowd at the bar gets old really fast. I do, however, like the food here (the potato skins are fantastic).

Perhaps it's just not my scene, but I wouldn't suggest going out of your way to get a drink at KSJ.

I agree with Barbara's review; the service was pleasant but nothing amazing; the bar area was very crowded with tourists and the frat boy type, which made flagging down bartenders a bit difficult. I liked the vibe of the space, but I wouldn't go out of my way to revisit.

Social is a bit average or below-average as far as bars go. There isn't much character. The bartenders and wait staff can be difficult to flag down. The mixed drinks are often quite watery. Worst of all, the crowds here, even on weeknights, are insane. If you're into the frat boy / sorority girl scene, Social may be worth your time. Otherwise, I would not recommend going out of your way to have a drink here.

Target

Category: Department Stores
Neighborhood: Fort Greene

3.0 star rating

First and foremost, I don't recommend visiting Target on a Saturday afternoon if you dislike baby strollers, screaming children, and absolute pandemonium.

On the other hand, there is a reason why Target is so chaotic: Their prices and selection are awesome. Where else can you buy a floor lamp, paper towels in bulk, kitchen appliances, toiletries, bedding, and even clothing under one roof? The store is easily accessible by numerous subway lines, which makes lugging your new purchases home very convenient. My advice is to visit on a weekday or during an off-hour.
