Five star service, four star food and wine. We dined here as a large group in the mezzanine dining section overlooking the main seating area down below. It was like being king of the mountain, presiding over a big festival of food. My prix fixe menu was great for the fall weather: roasted butternut squash with creme fraiche and pumpkin seeds; hanger steak with fingerlings and watercress; and a creme brulee  with coffee. The wine was Loire Valley, white and red, the company was great, and the staff totally treated us well. So, for special events, this is a really great option.

Good breakfast spot for a business meeting. The bagels are so-so, the coffee hot, but other than that, it ain't great. The place is staffed with extraordinarily nice and attentive people, which adds at least a star, maybe more. If you want a place to talk and people are coming in from out of town, this is a nice option.

The staff were nice, and the store was very well-stocked and clean. But it's way too corporate and sanitized for our current tastes. That said, we love their mulling spices - an annual pilgrimage for us -- but it's just too weird that the stores look so cookie-cutter regardless of where in the U.S. that you are, be it Baltimore or Palo Alto. We may be back, though, as we've got credit left on our gift card. And I just HAVE to have that santoku Wuesthof chef's knife ...

If you want a cooler, quintessentially local cooking store experience, try Toque Blanche in Half Moon Bay. If you buy something there, you don't feel so guilty.

The Horse Park at Woodside

We don't own horses, but we're glad that Woodside is so equestrian-friendly, and this place looks like the ultimate playground for your four-legged friends. The membership fees are not cheap, but if you own a horse, you already must have disposable income, so it's probably not a big deal. The 240+ acres are lovely, and it looks to be a very nice place.

The horses always look so sad when we pass them. Not friendly at all, and not many acres. A local friend who loves horses warned us to stay away. So we have.

Creekside Smokehouse

Phenomenal. Smoked. Fish. Need we say more? Actually, they now have smoked butter, a neat thing for the gastronome who has everything, plus smoked cheese and spreads. However, we recommend the cold smoked salmon (you will NEVER buy salmon from Trader Joe's again!), the rustic and yummy trout, and the meaty, oh-so-satisfying sturgeon, which tastes almost like a great smoked turkey or pork loin, except that it's fish and thus all that much cooler.. After stopping here, we made a smoked fish smorgasbord and devoured it with homemade polenta, fresh local microgreens, and a bottle of Santa Cruz Pinot Noir to cut the rich, smoky, intense flavors of the salmon and surgeon. No restaurant in the area could hope to match this culinary creation. Come to Creekside and make your own food magic happen!

Five stars when Mavericks is breaking, as it was the day we visited. Parking is predictably crazy then, but if you are lucky, a spot will open up. Do not park along the entrance road to the beach, or the police will ticket your vehicle. Otherwise, be prepared for lots of dog walkers, surfers, bicycles, people with mega-zoom lenses, binoculars, and the like trying to see the big waves, the jet skis, and the adventurous types who brave the waves. It's quite a cool experience. On non-Mavericks days, it's a pretty ordinary place. Not bad, but there are nicer beach walks south of HMB, like Cowell Ranch, or the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve and Montara to the North.

Beeson's Produce

Beeson's has the best heirloom tomato specials in the area when in season - buy 3 lbs. for $3.99 and get a 4th lb. for free. They also have numerous organic living herbs, fruit, vegetables, local honey, and various others tasty treats. Lots of strawberries and cherries, but the selection is always in tune w/ the time of the year.

It is MUCH easier to stop on your way to Half Moon Bay on CA-92 West, as it is an easy right-hand turn. Turning left will delay traffic and is a challenge when things are congested on the weekends.

This is a nice supplement to the excellent New Leaf in HMB and various local farmers' markets, such as the superb one Saturdays and Wednesdays at the College of San Mateo.

This place is all about the ambiance. I mean, how often do you get to dine next to a narwhal tusk, a model submarine, a cowboy hat lampshade, AND a velvet Elvis? Oh yes, the wine-by-the-glass options from Woodside vineyards and the Santa Cruz Mts. are choice - $6-10.50.  Michael Martella's Syrah Hammer is a good bet, as are the Fogarty choices in general.  And a glass of Le Cigare Volante, the Bonny Doon Rhone red, is also a great choice.

The staff are super efficient and friendly in their Western attire, and the food specials are fine. The Meyer lemon pie/cheesecake is a great desert for two. This is a neighborly place. Friday nights are comfortably busy.

Excellent deli choices, great for take-out lunches or last-minute entertaining. The salmon rolls and turkey avocado sandwiches were delicious. Local, fresh, fast. The ultimate triple threat.
