I quite enjoy the Mama's Empanadas, the Taquito Suave, and the tamales. Sometimes. Because every time I order I'm not sure if it's going to taste the same, be as good, etc. For example, the taquitos come with a variety of meats, most of which are dry and not very flavorful EXCEPT the beef, but only sometimes. when the beef is juicy, it is sooo good. When it is dry, pass the ketchup.
Mamas empanadas may either be corn or flour, and you don't know unless you ask, and they often don't have them. This worries me because it makes me think they're not making their own food or something. The tamales are all right, but only have one mode: spicy hot as hell. Can there be some different sauces, maybe on the side? It's not so bad when the meat is good, but when it's bad it's... not worth eating.
So, this place gets 3 stars for all the times when it is good. But watch out, because the badness will sneak up on you!

Eva's a bit more deli-like than restauranty, but that's fine with me. makes me feel more comfortable hanging around with my laptop while I chow on some yummy falafel. mmm mmm I have not yet scoped out the outlet situation (I don't need to anymore -- 7 hour battery!) but I did see some other folks around with laptops.
Can't wait to hang here more!

There is nothing wrong with their food. It's good. It's not great. It's not worth the price. From the sandwiches to the pastry. If I come in here, it's after I've already made myself full elsewhere.
I like the atmosphere quite a lot and I dig the space both on the top level and downstairs. I can see this being a good spot for group writing as long as the place isn't crowded. Downstairs, away from the counter and ordering and steamed milk noises once can get a lot done. The seating isn't super comfortable, nor is it super uncomfortable.
The wi-fi is password-protected and you have to by something to get that password (it's printed on your receipt). I am a real fan of this idea. It keeps me from having to ask for it and keeps the person behind the counter from having to act like they're sorry you need to buy something to get online. Cafes that worry over the ratio of people taking up space to people buying food should consider this approach.

Have only had bagels here and was quite pleased with them. Looking forward to going back often since I work nearby.

Also, the food here is still overpriced.
Still, it's miles above Amrita Cafe down the street and, despite everything, I have a fondness for this place. Perhaps because it's obviously a neighborhood hangout. I love seeing the hip people of color collected around the tables, typing away on their laptops. Plus, the chai lattes are the bomb.

I spend a lot of time at Society these days and I want to give it a lot of stars. But they always do something to dampen my day, and it usually involves the food. This place is a bit of a cross between a restaurant cafe and a coffee spot. On the one hand, you do have pastry and cookies and coffee and tea and such. On the other, you have paninis, pasta, Belgian waffles, and salads (when they're not out of stuff). The food is too expensive, in my opinion. Both for this area and for quality. As a place to come sit and do work and surf the 'net, it's great. As a cafe and restaurant, it's crap.
Each time I come here it's a game of Russian Roulette concerning whether the food I want is available or any good. The first time I had the spaghetti bolognese it was fabulous, but the last three times I've had it I wasn't impressed. The very last time the chef had made a tomato-based sauce with canned tomatoes (which is perfectly fine) but left the canned tomatoes WHOLE in my sauce. Now, I enjoy some tomato and I enjoy some sauce, but is it too much to ask that you break the tomato up a little? Really now.
They've switched chefs twice, I think, since I started coming here, so stuff I've ordered before may not taste the same nor come in the same quantity it did when I first fell in love with it. That is: So. Annoying. I've gotten to the point where I won't eat anything but the sweet stuff. At least that remains the same.
The wait staff is very friendly and it's really not their fault that the kitchen is ALWAYS out of something. I try not to take it out on them. Still, it's very frustrating. Each time I come it's a different thing, too. We have no beef, we have no pesto, we're out of pasta, our water isn't running. Sheesh.
They are friendly to laptops and sitting for a long time. Free wifi is always a plus. And they have fun events plus an art gallery.
This place isn't big, but it's not tiny. I particularly like that they have several kinds of seating arrangements. In the center there are two big, square tables that can serve as communal/group tables or you can sit next to a stranger and smile a lot. I like the big tables.
They also have seating along the wall - puffy booth-style seats across from regular chairs. And there are a few chair/chair table combos. So, something for everyone.
As I said, the place is laptop friendly but they do have a sign up that says:
No Laptops Sat & Sun 11a - 4p
This is reasonable, I think. I just have to remember that rule when I'm deciding what to do on a weekend.
For laptop lovers, there are outlets and they have no problem with you using them.
The drinks are good, at least. I love their snagria and I'll drink a chai tea latte every five minutes if my wallet lets me.
I really enjoy this little place. I just wish I could count on it for food.People thought this was:

I really like Saurin Parke. The atmosphere is wonderful, the staff friendly, the food good, the prices not ridiculous. I just wish they would let me plug in my laptop!
I often spend a few hours here (3.5 to be exact) trying to get some work done and eating grilled cheese sandwiches. It's a great place to hang out. It also makes a nice place to meet for group writing. provided everyone has a long-life battery or writes longhand. Oh, and there's free wifi, yay!
I've asked the manager guy about this and he wants to increase turnover, which is understandable from his point of view. But from my point of view, any place that isn't looking to keep me for more than a few hours isn't looking to keep me as a customer for long.
Still, I can't fault them, and the place is lovely. It's hard to be a freelancer in the city.People thought this was:

Cafe Amrita

The food here isn't great, particularly not for the price. The seating isn't that comfortable, either. But the thing that really galls me about the place is their hostility toward laptop luggers.
There are no outlets and on the weekends the wi-fi is off. I have never bought the idea that having free wi-fi and outlets is somehow bad for business. If you don't know how to make your cafe work with these things, you don't know how to make a cafe work.

Just as with the downtown Aroma, the food here is not worth what you pay for it. It's good, but not super great. The prices would lead you to believe that it's super great, so don't be fooled.
Other than that, I love the atmosphere of the place, the laid back workers, the fact that there is a lot of room downstairs and up, and the balcony out back on the upper floor.
The communal tables on the lower level aren't as long as the ones downtown as the space doesn't allow for it. There's also some seating at the bar. Upstairs are comfortable couches and modern, uncomfortable looking chairs around coffee tables. I'm not a big fan of typing with my laptop in my actual lap, but the couches are pretty supportive, so it works.
Outside there are two-person tables and surprisingly comfortable chairs under red umbrellas with Christmas lights to provide enough glow to see by. On a cool late summer night like tonight, it's the perfect place to sit and write a Yelp review.
The music isn't loud, but it's definitely noticeable. Comes from having a good sound system integrated into the place. As others have mentioned, there are several large screens around showing music videos. They don't bother me right now, but I can imagine retreating to the balcony if I really wanted to concentrate.
This Aroma has free wi-fi on weekdays and weekends, something the downtown branch did not offer. I have a strong signal out here on the balcony and I was told it also works well downstairs. The cashier told me that they don't police peopel who come in for wi-fi and paster them to buy something. Super awesome.
Downstairs, there aren't many or any outlets by the tables, but some by the bar seating. Upstairs there are outlets by the couches, but I don't see any on the balcony. Having freed myself from the tyranny of needing outlets by buying a netbook that lasts 6 hours, I am no longer concerned with such things. However, some people still are, so be aware.
Though they don't close on the Sabbath, they apparently do close on the Jewish high holidays, so keep that in mind before you head here.
I am ready to declare myself in love with this Aroma. I'll continue to visit and reassess if I need to. For now, a solid 4 stars.
