Mountain & River Adventures

5 relatives of mine and I embarked on the 2-day Lower Kern trip a few weeks ago.  Wow, what an adventure.

Our guide, Dan, came all the way from New Zealand.  What's much more important than where he's from is how extensively he's traveled as a river rafting guide.  The man was experienced.  At no point did any of us feel unsafe--including my uncle who was very nervous before the voyage began.  The rapids got our heart rates up though, especially on the class iv rapids on the second day.

The accommodations were comfortable although I recommend bringing a supplementary pad as theirs are a little thin.  We also brought some supplementary beer, which we were glad to have.  The food was delicious and plentiful.  When I say plentiful, I actually mean excessive.  You'll be stuffed the entire time.

Check out the rafting tours and don't be afraid to hit up the class iv rapids, hop out of the boat float down part of the river in just your life jacket, jump off the 25' rocks, and most importantly have fun!

Sequoia Lodge

The Sequoia Lodge is not only in a nice, scenic location (30' from the upper Kern River) but also is incredibly hospitable.  The grounds are nice with lots of sitting areas with misters, a fish preparing station if you like to fish, bbq's, and easy access to riverside trails.  The layout has that old motel feel where you drive right up to your room.  The rooms are clean and spacious and have kitchenettes, TVs with DVD players, coffee makers with free coffee, mini fridges, and even a bowl with a free bag of microwave popcorn.  Nice touch!

The staff is great and knowledgeable of the area.  Coming from LA, I'm not used to such genuinely friendly service.

NOT A DIVE BAR!!  This gastro pub gone classy has polished stones in the bathroom sink &  frosted glass urinal dividers, glass displays, microbrews, creatively lit tap handles on display, etc.

Would've been cool if it was more of a dive but I still recommend it.

The Red Room has a good crowd AND liter steins of draft beer ($6) served with pickled eggs ($1) and pretzels (incl.).  We went here for New Years Eve.  Being outsiders to LBC, my lady friend and I were glad to stumble upon this Yelp listing when determining our course from the V Room via iPhone.

Typical dive bar.  Cheap enough beer ($4).  Dimly lit eclectic decor.  Pool tables.  Cash only.  Looks like it's been there for at least a couple decades.

When I entered, I was greeted with a "No California Rolls or Spicy Tuna Rolls" sign.  That was fine, I get tired of those anyway.  Then the waitress asked me a very important question: would I like to sit at the sushi bar or at a table?  The bar is chef's choice and he could have served me whatever he wanted.  Hmmm..I'll try the table, where I can order off of a menu.  I tried some Skip Jack, which was delicious.  As good as it was, I probably wouldn't eat it again because my research yielded that Skip Jack is high in mercury.  The cut eel was awesome, as it should be.  The ambiance was good, I didn't feel like I was in a 3-story Sunset strip mall.  I'll be back.

Good luck finding this place--it's hidden behind the Container Store.  My dad used to go to Old Towne Pub back when it was called the Loch Ness Monster.  Now I go there sometimes when I'm in Pasadena.  Watch for the bartender that tries to rip people off.  Also, try not to get jumped by the biker gangs that hang out here.  The outside is relaxed enough but the music scene inside is painful.  Never pay the cover.

King Eddy Saloon

I took a Charles Bukowski bus tour and he apparently went to King Eddy, which happens to be the last bar on the old skid row.

King Eddy always treats me like a king.  He serves me incredibly cheap booze (cash only so bring your wallet), cheap food (you can eat a 3 course meal for $5), and entertains me by heckling the other customers (after hearing "NO WAY, JOSE!!!" a guy who was about to enter quickly ran away).  By King Eddy, I mean the bartender there whose name I'm never sober enough to remember.  He's old, he has no charm, he has no class, but he has sass.

I've never received such enthusiastic service, especially on a day as busy as Valentine's.  The flowers were expertly picked out and beautifully arranged--impressive since I ordered them over the phone.  They were very well received and lasted quite a while.
