Helen's Cycles

Category: Bikes
Neighborhood: El Segundo

1.0 star rating

I remember a time when Helen's  was known for high-end bikes with a sales staff that was commensurate with their product line.  They knew their bikes, they rode and raced them.  But last Saturday 3/26/2011, the sales guy was an idiot, no exaggeration, a total waste of my time!!

He asked if he could help me.  I told him I'm looking for 29ers. He then asked why I wanted a 29er.  I said for the ride,  I already have two 26" bikes.  He then asked how serious of a rider I am.  I gave a puzzled look and he then elaborated asking if I was planning to ride everyday.  So I assumed based on his line of questions, he must be a serious rider, or at least knows about bicycles.

However the type of bike I get and how much I spend is not determined by how often I plan to ride but instead on what trails I want to do.  So IDIOTpoint #1.

Then sales guy showed me two 29" bikes.  I asked what is the component level, XT? XTR? etc.  This is similar to the trim level packages with cars.  The guy said he didn't know what XT meant.  Well anyone in the bicycle industry for the past 20 or 30 years would know this.  So IDIOT point #2.

Then the sales guy said he'd like to get a MTB (mountain bike) some day.  Well if he doesn't have one, that explains why he doesn't know crap about MTB bikes let alone bikes AND why is he wasting my time asking assine questions!!  So IDIOT point #3!!!

In case you're wondering, yes, I will not be going back to this Helen's Cycle!!!

I stopped writing reviews on Yelp because there are too many damn liberal fools on here but Moby Dicks is sooo bad I just had to write a review to tell people just how bad it is!!

The Fish'n Chips is the worst I've ever seen or ate!! The fish was dry, tough and flat as a pancake! The breading was similar to the coating I've seen on country fried steak. The calimari, fried clams and other mystery items in Moby's Platter was not fresh at all. The food tasted like a TV dinner!!!!  Only thing decent was the fries and clam chowder.

As other reviews have warned, AVOID this place!!!

I'm typically not a fan of Fast-Food but I was hungry and I wanted to help support the family of slain officer Randy Simmons.  So I came to the fund raiser on Feb 13th, 2008, got there around 10pm. I never felt so safe at night in downtown LA. because there were men and women in uniform everywhere!!  And plenty of black & white patrol cars, not to mention several news crews.

It was nice to see this show of support but wish there were more citizens besides law enforcement at this event.  In any case, I hope more than enough $$ was raised and that the gesture by this BK franchisee brings some solace and comfort to the family of officer Randy Simmons.

Since Yelp isw a food review site, I'll mention I ordered a chicken sandwich, a king size milk shake and king size fries.  And I'll admit it, the fries, shake and chicken tasted great.!  I think I'll give BK a try the next time I'm hungry.

Finally decided to try this World's famous donut shop and treat a customer at the same time.  Anyways, the basic glazed donut was great.  I also ordered a bear claw but for some reason I got an apple fritter.  The apple fritter was good but I'll have to come back and try the bear claw!

Perfect venue for a customer-event this past Saturday.  We had fun shooting a variety of pistols, from Glocks, Beretta, and Browning .

This was my first time there and they are fairly safety conscious but it seems like they'll let anyone and everyone with every type of gun. They do have certain rules like limiting firing of one round per second....  We were admonished for not following that rule.

What's more, this place has everything!!  It's close to Randy's donuts and an Adult Video store!!  What more could you want??

Hey these guys have a super fast 10G network backbone.  They peer with all the major tier 1 and 2 network providers so they can offer fast low latency, high bandwidth connections.

They're also great to work with.  Friendly and nice folks!

The fish taco are great and were even better when they had 99-cent Fish Taco Wednesday.  But sadly, it seems that has ended.  I was there on Wednesday 2/6/08 and the price was also increased from $1.49 to $1.59.  Anyways, the fish tacos could use a bit less batter but nonetheless are tasty just like down South.

However, why risk life-and-limb and travel to Baja when you can travel to East L.A.??

Oh and try the fish or shrimp ceviche.  Both are a meal in itself, tasty and fresh.

I went to this shop as well as the one on Santa Monica Blvd.  Both are owned by the same father/son family.  Anyways, I met the father and he measured two pairs of pants and did a perfect job.  They're not too long that the cuff catches on my heel, or too short that I'm showing socks!

Also, I've had tailors that screwed up hemming my pants by making one side longer than the other, or worse, making them too short.  So it's great to find a tailor that measurements are spot-on!

I was here a few days ago for dinner with a bunch of Yelpers.  I had the swordfish special with asparagus and risotto, and since it was cold outside, I warmed up with minestrone soup.  The swordfish was excellent, topped with shrimp and a creamy sauce.  However, the asparagus was not fresh or crisp.  Seemed a bit over cooked and the risotto was on he cold side.

The desserts all looked awesome, especially the apple crisp.  Unfortunately I didn't leave any room for for desserts.  But next time I'll make sure to factor in the desserts and eat less of their great onion  bread.

One minor nit, the light above our table kept flickering near the end of the meal.  Not sure if that was an intentional sign to move out or what but it was annoying.

Came here with a customer.  We were a bit early for lunch but was seated immediately.  I had the angle hair pasta with shrimp and the goat cheese salad.  The salad was excellent but the angle hair pasta was not as fine as I hoped for.  In any case, the seasoning (garlic) and flavor was nice.  Oh and the steak tartar appetizer was good!
