Only in Manhattan can a store selling leotards and only leotards make it in a high-rent zone. Okay, maybe also in Tokyo.

The inventory is not huge but manages to span quite a variety of styles, some with sexy or artistic cutouts, others more traditional in shape. There's a rainbow of colors, many with contrasting trim or colorblocking, plus the very necessary all-black section.

I bought a basic black cap-sleeve to wear casually (I haven't taken a dance class in donkey's years) but the thing is so comfortable I'm already tempted to get another, in a more daring colorway.

$60+ is not cheap for a piece of dancewear, but considering they are made in Spain and absolutely 1000% nicer than standard leotards, it's not a terrible deal. Cool and unique shop.

So Daniel is as fun to chat with as ever, and the selection keeps changing, with fresh items appearing all the time.

Guess what I found today?? YOU WILL NEVER GUESS!

Perfectly perfect wide-leg Valentino evening trousers in black wool, with embellished embroidery on the pockets. They were $55. They are Valentino and about as on-trend as it gets for vintage.

There was also a stunning, 1920s dress -- allover black beading on sheer black chiffon. Though I DIED for it, that style is meant for the tall, lanky and flat-chested. None of which I am. But if you are, jet on over there and scoop it up.

Five shining stars!

The conversation is as stimulating as the selection at Wilbur Vintage -- owner Daniel has that rare talent of engaging customers and suggesting items without making you feel pressured to buy something, which is much appreciated.

The small shop brims with interesting womens' apparel -- Daniel has a good eye for items in quality fabrics that look as fashionable now as they did when they were constructed.  I bought a really unusual checked blouse in a lightweight wool here a few months ago -- the buttoned sleeves and high collar, along with the "Handmade in Scotland" tag really set the piece apart -- and the price was so fair, less than $20.

So many items, from a pair of 1930s hand-carved sandals that absolutely screamed "Myrna Loy vacationing in Tahiti," to the glass opal necklace ($9!) that I had to take home, tempted.  When I mentioned I was on the lookout for vintage clogs, Daniel said he'd keep his eyes peeled for them in his shopping expeditions.

Another highlight of the shopping experience here is Daniel's friends are often visiting, and spirited discussions ensue.  It's lovely to be treated like a person and not just a potential source of money.

We love Phish and now we know Phish loves us.  Why else would they have thrown us such a banger party with eight sets of music to set our hearts aflame?

I'm grateful to the band for their decision to host their ninth camp-out festival at a venue accustomed to handling up to 100,000 race fans at a time-- for once, there were enough bathrooms and water stations, and the campgrounds were nice overall.  I'm glad we ended up in South Dakota at the far edge of the grounds, where it was quieter and greener than closer to the racetrack/stage.

Biggest. Ball. Ever.

The most glorious way to top off a weekend of camping out at a rock festival is to devour a really lavish diner breakfast on the road home. Finding the right diner in unknown territory is a job for research or instinct; in this case I'm glad we trusted our gut and not Yelp reviews.

From the sweet waitress to the red vinyl booths, Red Oak made a positive first impression. We had developed a fixation on omelets and mozzarella sticks over our trail mix- and vendor food-weekend, and our server confirmed that both were superior choices.

I know chickens can fly, but man, these eggs had wings! Five minutes after ordering up one Western and two feta-spinach 'lets, we were delivered three super hot plates of eggs, fries (or homefries, your choice) and toast. The feta-spinach version had plenty of the goodies folded in throughout (not stuffed like some omelets), and was perfectly tender, besides being gigantic. The much-anticipated fried cheese was likewise smoking hot, crispy and exactly what I wanted.

With three iced teas, the bonanza came to $31 before tip. Rock and roll.

I've got mixed feelings about this venue.  I had a great time, but it was more of a personal destiny thing rather than a win for logistics.

First the pros: The venue is pretty, new, and the bathrooms are indeed nice.  There are trees and flowers, and the walkway that travels across the top of the lawn all away around the venue is actually a lovely stroll.  The sound in the pavilion is great--super loud--and the sightlines are good. Even the parking lots are nice.

The staff is AMAZING. From the woman keeping the ladies' bathroom line moving to the 12-year old kid who sold me popcorn from his family's little operation, every staffer and volunteer was kind, friendly and helpful.  We even got band-aids from the First Aid office when my friend cut her hand.

Now the bad, and this is a biggie: There are not enough bathrooms, nice as they are.  I saw Phish here over three nights, and let me tell you, hippies like to drink, so maybe this is not a problem for an Elton John concert--but I just don't know how you get away with two 40-stall women's bathrooms for a venue that sells out at 15,000.  It's ridiculous... if you have a few beers you will spend half the show walking to/from and waiting in line for the bloody john.

Sound on the lawn sucks it.  It's not loud enough for me, but the sightlines are good and the grass is well-maintained.

We took yellow school buses to the venue that traveled different inbound venue-access roads than the car traffic, so waiting in traffic  wasn't an issue. It is rural two-lane roads all around, though, so extra travel time could not hurt.

I'd go back to Bethel but I won't drink any beer.

My brain is foggy but the crumpled cocktail dress on the floor and the mangled remains of a midnight (?) snack are telling me that last night's party was more than a little bit fun.

I was too busy sucking down Left Hand pale ale (poured by the ever-gracious Dan Conway) to snag any of the sexy-looking Khyber Pass chorizo corn dogs and cool Cantina ceviche arrayed on the tables.  What I DID have (much later; remember the midnight snack?) was a mushroom- and roasted pepper-packed, black olive-smeared vegetarian muffaletta that the awesome Khyber staff had wrapped for us slow-to-leave types to take home!  That's southern hospitality for ya.

As to the space, I can't believe appRenaissance owner Scott Wasserman basically invited us into his super-rad loft and let us drink, dance and party all over it.  From the 309 Gallery-curated artworks to the video games and conversational arrangements of comfy couches, the space screamed "Stand back, creativity in action!"

As usual, DJ QiCommand got everyone dancing and James David Saul captured the snap-happy crowd.  Michelle C may have to change her nickname to Queen of Good Vibes and Happy Times.  Bravo to all, and thanks for the chance to borrow a tiger-striped dress from my best friend and wear it in such good company.

Who roasts green peppers?  Cheap people.  I was shocked when I dissected my roasted pepper, artichoke heart and mozzarella sandwich to see the green guys dominating the ingredient list.  There also was barely any mozzarella -- I counted three little slices, each about as big as a half-dollar. What are you trying to say, Mezze? I know I've gained a few inches this winter, but really, be nice.

The bread was nice, and the girl who served me was nice, but for $8, you ought to get a better sandwich.  With sooo many choices in the Terminal, I won't be eating lunch here again.  Consider yourself warned.

Maru Global - CLOSED

Let's talk about okonomiyaki.  That's a sort of Japanese pancake thing all stuffed with cabbage and topped with bonito flakes, spicy mayo, and all manner of other goodies.  Maru has it.  It's less than $10 and mad filling, besides being an umami explosion. You don't know how to make it at home.  Get it.

PS: Okonomiyaki are cooked on a flat-top griddle. Takoyaki are griddled in a special pan with half-sphere indents. They are NOT deep-fried. Just to be clear on what you are gettting--many of the reviewers here are confused as to the nature of the product.

If you believe street food is the essential expression of a culture -- or "Truth in Street Carts" -- then you have to hit up Maru Global.  Their takoyaki, which are tiny spheres of crepe batter stuffed with octopus, shrimp, cheesesteak, tofu, etc., have never before been seen in Philadelphia, and I only know of one place in NYC that griddles them up.

My fave here is the spicy octopus version, topped with spicy Kewpie mayo and bonito flakes that dance and sway atop the molten Maru balls. Like pancakes, french fries and crepes, these do not travel well -- I'd recommend snagging one of the little tables and eating in.  You can also pick up fun Japanese candies when you're done your meal, but the dessert chocolate Maru balls doused in whipped cream are a more decadent bet.

Not much atmosphere here -- but come on, it's street food!  Don't put des cartes before the horse.

Update - 2/28/2011
$17.04 for a sixer of Oskar Blue's Mamma's Little Yella Pils and one sack of Haribo Happy Colas is way too much.

Latimer still has a boss selection of foreign and craft beer, but the prices have risen so much they are now at the level of the Foodery, which is to say rapacious.

You may as well drink your fancy brew out of its proper glass while an attractive bartender flirts with you at these prices.

Good spot to pick up a craft six-pack or a Belgian 25 oz. bottle to take to a party.  Less expensive than the Foodery, but don't go around asking the cashier mad weird beer questions, he's busy selling cigs, Fritos, and everything else to the Center City neighbors, drunk McGlinchey's patrons, and those ambitous homeless who buy 40s for underage kids in order to get theirs.
