Always wanted a sweet Chinese grandpa?
Now you can have one too!
With Dr. Lai.

After years of testing with Western doctors and dealing with multiple stomach and intestinal issues, I sought acupuncture as an alternative solution. Dr. Lai made magic happen.

Flaherty will get you to the dentist.

While eating their clam chowder I cracked my tooth on a hard mysterious chunk of (probably a combo of clam shell, West Indies sand, and a seafaring baby's first tooth).

Some lady must've been ashamed of what she did in the bathroom, because she overcompensated by spraying Glade's newest "Summer Fresh Fecal Flowers" scent.
While nearly passing out on a notably clean bathroom floor,  I may have discovered a new form of tear gas.

Overall:

Polite service.

Clean and well-kept.

A tooth for a tooth.

Manly decor and decadence.

We were quickly seated and catered to by our lovely server. Friends were feeding me (not like a baby bird) but with dirty, gentle hands:
fried chicken, mussels, truffles and other food I can't remember.

We met the chef, former Food(porn) Network star, Tyler Florence.
Tyler came over to our table and introduced himself. I suspect he was planning on making me his part-time lover (based on his prolonged hand-holding, intense gaze and speaking just above a whisper.)
Then he suddenly let go--perhaps remembering where he was, who he was, or that he forgot to take off his wedding ring.

I sat dazed, lactose-intolerant and confused.
Did I say something wrong?
I didn't mean to look scornfully at your wedding ring.
Forgive me for being so judgmental.

T-Flo,I might forget the food you made, but I'll never forget about our moment. Don't deny it.

(Tyler's wife, I'm kidding!)

(psst, Tyler, call me)

A few pals and I visited on Bastille Day for a joint birthday lunch. There's great outdoor seating if you're lucky enough to go on a sunny day in San Francisco.  That day French words fluttered through the air occasionally interrupted by crass English words from our table.

Mussels
Delicious dead sea life, soaked in white wine sauce, and even better chased down with more wine.

Coq Au Vin
Lovely, I'd order this again and not just because I like saying Coq.

Flourless Chocolate Cake
Gluttonly delish. If you're looking for a fun way to get fat, this is your ticket!

How to describe this place?

Cheap, relatively clean and just good enough for repeat business--- just like the men I date.

If you're on a good date get something light like the pho, if you're on a bad date, treat yo self with the white pepper garlic noodles because:
1. They're delicious
2. Easy on the stomach
2. Gives a subtle hint that you don't want to make out later

Belgium Waffles+ Eggs Benedict all up in my mouth.

A gal pal and I split two dishes. The portions weren't bad, but the eggs were too runny. No bodily fluid jokes.  The potatoes were fantastic, as were the fluffy waffles topped with fresh fruit and whipped cream.

During our meal, we stared at a boy (who was way too old and big) sit on his father's lap for 20 minutes. Seeing the two, blurred the line of being hilarious / illegal.

Chomo jokes aside, I'd return to this place just for the waffles and taters.

Delicious take-out was delivered by a nice 'brah." He didn't even bat an eye when we paid his tip in change from a cardboard Tootsie Roll canister.

Tip: Try the Thai Peanut Chicken+Spinach, it's divine.

+ Live salsa band without a cover charge.
+ People watching.
-  Watching sweaty hippy chicks pretending to salsa.
+ Sneaking into a private party and eating their food.
--Slow service on the weekends...which led me to eat other people's food. Maybe a plus/minus on that one.

Overall, enjoyable.

Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar

Update - 2/10/2010
With prompting of friends I returned to Tonga Room. The 50 year-old funky Asian band did 70-80's covers (middle-to-upper class white people wedding music) along with choreographed shoulder dips.  Even the lead's Michael Jackson falsetto hit the right notes. I liked when they'd start playing and the 'rain' would fall gently. It became increasingly humid while I watched several wholesome-figured people do some sexy hip rolls.

One of the guys in our group kept swinging from the 'boat' ropes. He nearly kicked several people in the head and mysteriously was never thrown out. Maybe it his convincing story we were all from the south and he was fresh outta jail. Plus, if he didn't have ropes like that at home so when would he ever get to do this? It's a solid argument.

The drinks still taste like burning. Our waiter was a sweet kid. I left feeling dizzy, but happy.

    This sums up my experience:
    *Cheesy lounge music.
    *Entertainment fee without entertainment.
*Turpentine drinks. I swear my liver fell out of my pant leg in the elevator.
*Three year olds playing in the middle of the bar, messing up my buzz.
    *And crotchety service. WTF?

Oh, and I think I got a rash from the chair.
