Woodfire Grill

Category: American (New)
Neighborhood: Morningside / Lenox Park

5 star rating

As part of my trek to Atlanta's Top Chef restaurants, Woodfire Grill was next in line. Going this past wednesday with my foodie friend, we decided that if we were going to do Woodfire, then by golly we would do it right. We opted for the 5 course tasting menu. WowOWow. It was stunning. Everything was scrumptious and the quail was perhaps the best quail I have ever eaten in my life and that is quite a lot. Our waitress was great and she knew her items. But after two drinks and the 5 course tasting menu and tip, it was about 100 dollars a person, but well worth it.

A friend and I went to the Falcons game today. We get to the stadium in plenty of time. We had a parking pass for parking lot "B". Guess what! We couldn't find it. An hour and a half later still didn't find it. We missed the first quarter. We had to pay a different lot 10 dollars so we could park there because we were so frustrated. The staff, and police were the most unhelpful people in the entire world. And to top it all off, the Dome's food is more expensive than Turner Field food.

Sam's Hair Salon

Sam's Hair Salon is the closest salon to my Cheshire Bridge apartment. Sam's also delivers. Sam specializes in Men's haircuts, but his salon is full service for men, women, and children. With your haircut, comes a complimentary hair consultation with your stylist. Sam himself was my stylist, and he did a knockout job. While waiting to get my haircut, I was offered a coke, and I readily took it.

A men's haircut costs $20.00, so it's pretty competitive with other salons in the area for a men's cut. I haven't been it there in a few months, simply because I like trying new places to make sure I'm going to the right place, but I had a few coupons for places that brought my haircuts down to 6 or 7 dollars. But rest assured, I'll be back to Sam's.

A quick recommendation though: Call before you go. While technically they accept walk-ins, they highly prefer that you call before hand, and they will make that known.

Desta Ethiopian Kitchen

Category: Ethiopian

4 star rating
 11/7/2009
I recently tried Desta Ethiopian restaurant with Daniel B. at a UYE. I ordered the prime rib eye steak, with a side salad. The food was stellar. It was perfectly seasoned, wonderfully cooked, and a good portion size. The prices were great, as my meal only cost 12 dollars. And our service was great. Our waitress was exemplary, and was wonderful in offering her recommendations and descriptions of the dishes. The dessert was also pretty a-ok as well!

The only thing that I have to complain about is that I'm just not sure I'm down with the whole eating everything with your fingers method...including the salad. You could eat the baclava with a fork though. That was good.

Nanston Dental Group

Neighborhood: Midtown

2 star rating

I went to this dental office for my routine dental exam and cleaning on a wednesday because I had a coupon for a free teeth whitening. They called me back quickly. I waited however forever in the back. They took the xrays, and I waited another 15-20 minutes for the hygienist. She cleans my teeth (not very well as my mouth didn't feel very clean after the cleaning which i've never experienced before from a dental cleaning) but she was very nice. I then waited another 30 minutes or so to see the dentist and he did a thorough but good exam.

Dr. WIngfield found two cavities and also needed to pull a tooth for a crown. I decided to get a second opinion and that opinion was very different. The second opinion, Dr. Daryl Kimche's office, found two cavities but in different spots. The others didn't need to be filled just watched right now. Nanstons prices for the two fillings were double what the other the dental office charged for THREE fillings, plus Nanston would have over charged me had I had them do my fillings because they said my insurance didn't cover white fillings...WRONG!

the best I've had, and wont be going back. Plus the free whitening was a take home kit. Not what I was expecting. And It didn't work because it was a weak solution :-(.

Antico Pizza

Categories: Pizza, Italian
Neighborhood: Westside / Home Park

4 star rating
 11/7/2009
Ok, so, I'm not a huge pizza fan. I mean, I like pizza, but it's not one of my favorite foods. BUT, Antico's excelled. The only reason it loses a star is because of the price. For a pepperoni pizza and a big bottle of water, it was almost 28 dollars. But Antico's is the heart of Naples in Homepark. If this place keeps excelling it will have to expand and rather quickly, as there is almost no seating in this restaurant.

The pizza, wow, it's good. It's saucy, with yummy cheese, and it's messy. Just how I like my pizza. It radiates Italy. The pizza and the restaurant. Big basil leaves on the pizza add a great ambiance to the pizza, and the fact that this restaurant only serves little bottles of italian beverages, and bottles of  Italian spring water, with gas or without. Antico's is definitely worth checking out!

Tires Plus Total Car Care

I'm a fan of Tires Plus. Most Tire Plus's that is. This one not so much. This is the second time i've been there. This time, I go to get my oil changed, and to just have them look at the car, etc. They tell me that I need to get my belts replaced and that they are severely cracked and could bust at any moment. Not liking this answer, I take it to another auto repair shop that is very reputable in town, and they told me that, that wasn't true. They said my belts look good and they didn't see any cracks or any need to replace them.

So Kong Dong

Category: Korean

5 star rating

So, I have to admit something...before last night, I was a Korean food virgin. It's embarrassing to admit, I know, but it's the truth. But it's a problem that's been remedied.
To start off, when I finally found the place, I was nervous. Like you should be on your first time. My friend and I walk in and are promptly greeted, in English, by the manager/owner. We are seated and hot tea is brought to us...but not in hot tea glasses. It was in those plastic water/drink glasses that you find in like school cafeterias, restaurants, etc. Interesting.
After we ordered, we were pleasantly surprised by the food, my beef dish was perfectly seasoned and sauced, and the rice was good and sticky.  My friend had some fried rice type thing that came out piping hot, with a raw egged cracked on top. That was cool. You mix it in with the rice and veggies to cook it. She also had ribs, and can we say YUMMY! I stole a bite to confirm that the ribs were excellent, and they were.  While we were eating, a waitress came around and brought little fried fish to everybody. Whole fried fish. Chopsticks only. You figure that one out.

Overall, My "first time" with Korean food was outstanding. I'd definitely hit that again. The restaurant I mean.

Houlihan's

4 star rating

I met my mom at the airport as she had a long layover there on her long layover to Las Vegas. We decided to have dinner at Houlihans, since I couldn't go through security. For an airport restaurant, it as actually really good. The salad that comes with the meal is absolutely wonderful. Actually, one of the best salad's I've had in quite some time. Shortly after we finished our salad, our food came out. The salmon that my mom had was very good, but it was served on a bed of lettuce which was weird, and wasn't great because we just had eaten a great salad. I had the baby back ribs which were good.

The service was fairly prompt, and our food came out quickly. The only problem I really had is that it's much pricier than it should be, but that is probably because it's in the airport. But for 40 dollars plus tip with no alcohol and just water to drink it sort of unreasonable.

I would probably give three-and-a-half stars, but since that is not an option, i'll round up, out of kindness, to four stars!

Smith's Olde Bar

Categories: Music Venues, Pool Halls
Neighborhood: Morningside / Lenox Park

4 star rating

Smith's Olde Bar, one of Atlanta's favorite bars, is also one of my favorites. I go to Smith's quite often as it is right down the street from my apartment. Last night was the first time I had been to the music venue part, in the upstairs portion of Smith's. The music venue is now one of my favorites.

Smith's is one of the few places in Atlanta that still serves my beloved Rolling Rock. Smith's also has nightly drink specials that makes it worth going to, as well as some of the best music shows in the "big A."

Pros:
-Music Venue
-Thursday night trivia
-food
-Rolling Rock :-D

Cons:
-very inadequate parking
-lack of Rolling Rock upstairs
