Paul's

Category: Burgers
Neighborhood: East Village

5.0 star rating

This is how you make burgers. When you go in and look behind the counter you can see the dude (hes sometimes wearing goggles, thats how intense these burgers are) make the patties out of fresh ground beef. That's right, no pre-made patties here. The veggies and toppings are as fresh as can be, and the buns are your standard run of the mill sesame seed buns. The fries are are delicious too, I usually go with the steak fries. Though, if you want the worlds most perfect meal, order just a burger to go and walk over to Pommes Frites a few stores down and get some bomb ass Belgian fries to go with your burger.

The staff here is very nice. I've gotten take out and have eaten here and the service is just as nice and friendly either way. They can handle the lunch rush and the dinner rush better then most places I've been to.

I really wish I still worked in the east village cause then I'd be at Pauls at least once a week. But maybe its a good thing cause then I'd be around 500lbs.

Definitely the best burgers in NYC that I've had so far.

Peas & Pickles

Category: Fruits & Veggies
Neighborhood: DUMBO

Being less then a block from my office, I frequent this place often because of its convenience.

The prices are for the most part reasonable, especially on the stuff at the deli counter. The people behind the deli counter never seem like they want to be there but they have some magical ability to remember everyones order perfectly. Not once have they gotten a sandwich that I've ordered wrong. Stay away from the burgers though, they're really dry and plain.

They have a wide variety of things there, like a sushi bar, a salad bar and all sorts of candy from around the world. They even have Pocky if you're ever in a pinch for a snack while watching fansubs of Naruto on your laptop in Brooklyn Bridge park.

They have some special sandwiches at the deli counter, I'll describe a few of them briefly:

1) Chicken Parm hero: Really good, though in the description for it they list "fresh mozzarella" instead of parmesan cheese. They also put basil leaves on it which I take off, but it leaves a good taste behind.

2) Monte Cristo hero: A hero with bacon, ham, turkey, provolone and lettuce. Not even remotely like any other monte cristo i've ever had, but still really good. Also eating one of these takes about 10 years off your life so eat with caution.

3) The Peas and Pickles hero: Does not contain peas or pickles, surprisingly.

The woman at the register is often very rude to her employees and sometimes customers, though less so if you're a regular. I've managed to strike up small conversations here and there with her without her yelling at me. The line here gets really long around lunch time on weekdays. One minute there will be no one and the next minute the line is out the door.

Peas and Pickles also has not one, but TWO atms, located by each door, for maximum convenience.

Speak Low - CLOSED

Category: Lounges
Neighborhood: DUMBO

5.0 star rating

I guess I really shouldn't be writing a raving review for this place as one of the reasons I like it so much is there is barely anyone in here.

Speak Low is hidden within Rice, a (in my opinion) crappy overpriced Asian place. Once you descend down the stairs, you enter a speakeasy-esque bar decorated with things like birdcages. The music they play is really good and not too loud, and there are always lots of free tables so this is a good place to go if you want to chat with friends.

There seems to be a lot of complaints about the service but every time I've gone the service has been excellent, and the bartender friendly.

The drinks and food are really good, my favorite drink being the Dark and Stormy. Their chips and hummus are delicious and perfect for a bunch of people to snack on.

I work a few blocks away and usually make it there for happy hour, between (I think) 5-7 where drinks are buy one get one.

If you're in Dumbo its definitely worth a look as there are not too many bars around. Also the bathrooms are really cool!

Alchemy

After a night of drunken debauchery, my friends and I headed over to Alchemy's weekend brunch to soften our hangovers with some delicious breakfast food. We sat in the back patio. I ordered the Brioche French Toast which was DELICIOUS.The fruit on top was a nice touch, and delicious as well. The waiter was nice and friendly, but he forgot to bring the orange juice I ordered. When I told him, he comped it for me so that was really nice! Definitely recommended!

C-Town Supermarket

Category: Grocery
Neighborhood: Sunset Park

3.0 star rating

This C-Town is located a block away from my apartment so its very convenient for me, and its literally 2 steps away from the R/M line so its convenient for commuters on that line too. I just moved here from New Jersey a few months ago so I was used to huge supermarkets the size of football stadiums. This is probably the second smallest supermarket I've been in. But its got all the basic necessities so no complaints there. The one mystery is why they don't have land-o-lakes cheese at the deli counter. I have to walk up to Steve's C-Town on 9th to get my cheese for my sandwiches, so minus one star for that! Also one time they had a DJ outside for their grand opening celebration (4 or 5 months after they opened) and he played a lot of weird music quite loudly.

The pros:
1. Nice and clean for the most part
2. Employees are friendly and helpful
3. Good sale prices
4. Extremely close to my apartment
5. Never really too crowded
6. Aside from the cheese, good deli counter and butcher section

The cons:
1. Really small aisles
2. A lot of the customers take up said small aisles and will look at you and not move out of your way for some reason. Really, what the hell?
3. Produce selection ain't that hot, my cantaloupe got nasty real fast
4. Not too big of a selection
5. They close way too early
