Downtown Restaurant - CLOSED

They closed for "remodeling" at the beginning of the summer and while the website is still up the phone is disconnected.  This one is gone folks, bummer, nice place to get a nice drink.

Dining out in California is often an unremittingly casual experience.  You can see waiters in tuxxes and patrons in flip-flops and 20-year old, torn Billabong T-Shirts.  Being a native here I tend towards casual dress but when I walk into Downtown, I want to wear a suit.  And it's not an intimidation thing, they don't make me feel bad for showing up in jeans but it's like dressing up for that special date even when the venue isn't that dressy, for some people or places you just want to look your best.  Downtown is a beautiful restaurant with an awesome bar and menu.  They have a great selection of whiskeys and vodkas and a great wine list.  Later in the evenings they often have live music playing in the background.  Prices are not cheap but I haven't felt gouged here with the exception of being charged $4.50 for bar nuts.  But the drinks and entree prices are all reasonably standard for the type of place you're at.  This is a great place to go after you've seen a show at the Berkeley Rep or if you're just looking for a nice place in downtown Berkeley.

British Bankers Club

 Update - 9/3/2008
Well I've been back since my last review and I was disappointed.  While they sort of hang on the British Pub motif apparently new owners took over and have eliminated any sort of British food.  The bartender said the owner wanted to take it in a new direction but it was kind of a let down. A British themed pub without traditional British Pub Grub?  What's up with that?

Ahhhh the BBC, not bad pub gurb and decent beers.  Feels a bit forced though, a little too self concious.  I've found other pubs that are simply there and cozy and comfortable and so far I've never really unwound here.  More like a theme restaurant/bar as opposed to an actual place that you'd just hang in, which is what a pub is supposed to be right?

A really decent IPA if you like hoppy beer and a really nice burger.  Interesting building, looks like an old warehouse on California facing the train station to boot so it's nice for a pub crawl.  Was only there for lunch so not sure what it's like in the evening although at lunch it was filled with families as well as people hanging out, a nice mix.

I went here with a friend for the first time last night.  The food was decent, I had the Skirt Steak and she had the Pork Loin.  I ordered it medium rare and it was perfect, a little pink although they put too much other sauce on it for my taste.  Crab Cakes as an appetizer were a good choice as well.  So, not a bad experience and the price was reasonable but overall it was just a little weird in that they were practically empty on a Saturday night.  Our reservation was for 8pm and through a series of events we got there about 20 minutes early.  Still, they sat us and the restaurant was about 1/3 full at the time so I figured they were getting started.  By 830 though it was just us and one other table, the restaurant was dead.  Now judging by the number of Yelp reviews I guessed they weren't brand new and after we left we saw a bunch of other restaurants that were packed.  While the food was good and he reason you ultimately go I have to admit  it was just a little strange being in an almost completely empty restaurant on a Saturday night, especially since everything seemed nice, good service, decent (not great but good for the money), food, nice enough decor.... strange.

Two lads Winery

As a Californian I think I know something about wine, heck where I live I'm surrounded by world class wine regions.  So I was a bit cautious about a new winery in Michigan where I was visiting.  My wife and I had tasted a number of Michigan wines and some were decent while others were not worth repeating.  We couldn't have been more happy with Two Lads however.  This is a new winery with a spacious, modern tasting room with a view of the water.  But more importantly the wine is really good.  In particular we went home with a Chardonnay and a Rose in our suitcase from this place.  The sparkling wine was also good.  If you're tasting wine in the area you need to stop here and give them a try, I liked them as well because they reminded me of home.

North Beach Pizza

If just on the food I'd give them 4-5 stars.  My wife and I love their pizza, massive amounts of cheese and great flavor to it.  Wonderful pizza.  But ... the quality of the food is not simply the only factor in determining whether you like a place.  And the problem is that we often order delivery and they continually screw it up.  The drivers are slow, they got lost, they hire people who can't read maps (they even told me once when I called to complain that the guy doing delivery was "sort of a retard" - their words).  Now we live in an apartment with a buzzer system and while it's not as easy as a house you'd think after 2-3 trips they'd get it.  All the other restaurants we order delivery from figure it out, why not North Beach?  I can almost count on them to be 1/2 hour late minimum, and they can definitely be later.  And this is a shame because they have really great pizza and I'd rather order from them than the big chains.  I'd order from Amici's but they have a $25 minimum and often I don't want all that food.  So, if you order, be prepared as you might wait awhile.  Otherwise, go get it yourself or eat it there.  Their restaurant is cramped but the staff seemed efficient and the place was clean.  Definitely still a favorite, just not a spur of the moment meal.

My wife and I discovered this place the other day as we were craving Chinese food.  Great but not excellent Honey Walnut Prawns (I've had sweeter) but excellent potstickers.  They were fast too, very fast delivery and they bring it in a reusable cloth bag that they leave for you to use again.  Smart, that.  All in all, the food was tasty, hot, and not overly oily.

A really cool wine bar/bistro in downtown San mateo!  They have a variety of paninis, salads, and other apptizers to complement a great wine list.  They get bonus points for having a wine list that shows both their bottle price and the retail, and their markups are cheap, $4-7!  They get additional points for taking us early, before being open.  My wife and I were in the neighborhood and saw them open and went in.  It was about 3:15 on a Sunday.  They were holding a private party in back and they told us their normal hours started at 4pm but then they told us to take a seat and they served us anyhow!  Now that is cool.  If you're looking for a big meal they likely won't have what you want but this is a great place for lunch or for a drink after a show!

Excellent breakfast place with a large menu.  I had the Bacon Belgian Waffles which were delicious.  My wife had pancakes and between us we had a side of hashed potatoes that were perfect, not too greasy at all.  We were there maybe 11am and they were certainly busy but they were fast.  We were tenth on the list and were seated in 10-15 minutes.  They have free coffee in thermoses outside for you to enjoy while you wait.  Not just a thermos or two but also cream, sugar, and all the trimmings, now that's service.  Besides, I've definitely waited longer at I-Hops before on the weekends and to me this place was clearly better.  This was our first visit but it won't be the last!

I've been here once, early on a Saturday (waiting for a restaurant) and it was an older crowd but it was nice, not overly a dive by my standards.  Decent drinks, good beer selection, don't expect it to be too much and it'll be fine.  I'd be interested in seeing it late but haven't got around to it again and am not going out of my way to get there.
