So I have been back a ton since that first review and have grown to love the mac and cheese here. Whenever I had had a rough day at work, that is usually what I am craving. Paired with a beer, you can't go wrong.
The grilled cheese, tuna melt and turkey burgers are good too, and the garlic fries are addictive, but so far, nothing has topped the mac and cheese. And since you have already given up being healthy that day, if you order it, go ahead and get the black bottom cupcake too. What the hell. -

so i been listening to a lot of david sedaris recently. as i looked around flash's, at the simple layout, cute waiter, nice but forgettable wall decor and the light streaming through the open windows, i could hear david's voice in my head: "i like it."
and i did. we got some appetizers, beer, wine, and after our bosses left, cocktails. the service was fairly good and people all looked happy to be out of work. i will be back for lunch or drinks or dinner in the near future, esp since it is across the street from my office ("how conveeeeeeenient" - i've been listening to a lot of babs bunny).

Also, no one batted an eye when I needed to nurse my son. which is always nice.
If you have a kid and want to brunch, come to Union early. If you want to enjoy your french toast sans kiddies, go after 12ish.

the french toast i had this morning was the lightest, fluffiest, sugar crustedest, sweetest most amazing french toast i ever had.
perhaps i am over selling this.
my mom, sister, the boy and i headed to union for a joint birthday brunch this morning. they didn't have our reservation listed, but we were seated regardless. the decor was upscale but simple. i liked the black and white motif, the studded benches and LOVED the square chandeliers.
the service was also prompt and friendly. no comments there.
we got the special, $10 = a juice, tea/coffee, a coffee cake (a bit dry, but nice when dunked in coffee) and choice of 4 entrees. i had the aforementioned french toast/ambrosia, my mom the chef's omelet, my sister the salmon eggs and josh had the huevos rancheros (not on the special list). all dishes were well received, but no one but josh could finish their plates due to the amount of food (this sounds like a negative; what i mean to say was that the portions were huge).
brunch for four with coffee and tea and juices and huge portions and good service and a great clean atmosphere for $50? i will definitely be back.
ETA: apparently, the french toast has soome booze in it. it is still the best i have ever had....

This is a great place for the mom classes during the week, but on a weekend, it fills up pretty quickly and you loose that stroller and baby room.
Three stars bc the menu is boring and a bit over-priced. Sadly, this is the only place I know of (besides Starbucks) that serves coffee shop food in the area.

Mr. Crepe
Categories: Creperies, Coffee & Tea
Neighborhood: Davis Square
My mom group has adopted Mr. Crepe as our headquarters for the following reasons.
1 - Near the T
2 - Tons of room for strollers
3 - The nice people bring you your drinks and food when you have a baby with you
4 - Changing table in the bathroom (but only in the women's bathroom - what is this,1945!)
5 - No one makes a fuss when you breast feed here. And boy do we ever. I think there was one day where 6 of us were feeding at once. The clientele didn't bat an eye (but the crepe guy was in 7th heaven - which was kind of sketchy, but we just laughed it off).
6 - Great for people watching. I take my son there, sit near the window, and he just watches the world go by. A perfect way to spend an hour or so in the afternoon:)
Oh - don't get the lemonade though - WAY too sweet.
Accessible by car
Near a ton of other "smug married" stores (Costo, Bed, Bath & Beyond, Target, Home Depot, etc etc)
Decent selection
Easy returns and exchanges
Had a good registry experience here
Cons:
Kind of impersonal
Can be pricey
Not a lot of clothing selection

I have taken four classes here so far. The first one went over what to do after you have the baby and was very helpful. The two of us knew nothing about babies, and the information we learned in this class really helped those first few weeks. What to expect during the labor, what may happen right after the birth, how to soothe, swaddle and some feeding concerns, what to expect after the shock has worn off, etc. The only complaint I had about this class was that the teacher (a doula) was VERY pro natural childbirth to the point that I felt like a monster for considering an epidural (that didn't stop me though, don't worry:) ) She was also very "don't let them take the baby away from you for cleaning/checking/etc until you feed him". It made me afraid that the drs and nurses didn't have his best interest in mind. Other than that, however, it was a good class. My husband, nanny and I took the infant CPR class, a must for all parents, I think. I have also taken two new mom classes, which have been great. Great teachers, wonderful environment, and the biggest take away is making friends with other new moms. We joke that you are essentially paying people to hang out with you, but it worked for us, so there you go. I would recommend the new mom classes to anyone looking to bond with others who have babies the same age as yours. My group has kept in touch - a brunch last weekend and ladies night out (sans baby!) in a few weeks.
The other big plus here is the customer service. Everyone I spoke to is willing to bend over backwards to help. For example, my pump (which I did not buy at Isis) wasn't working well, so I brought it there to ask them what was wrong. Not only did she test it, call around for the new part, and call me a few days later when she realized they don't carry that part, but also called the manufacturer and had them send me the part to my house for free. I don't know any store that would do that for an item I didn't even purchase there.
It is a great place to blow a lot of cash quickly. I like shopping here, however, bc the staff and atmosphere is knowledgeable and warm, and it seems less warehouse-y than BabiesRUs. They discontinue products that they do not believe in, which is nice. Maybe not the best place for those shopping for new moms (hit BabiesRUs for selection and price) but a great center and resource for new parents.
OK, I need to say this. Not worth a star deduction, but I considered it. It is next to IMPOSSIBLE to get a stroller through those doors. Get new doors people - it will make a WORLD of difference.

Food: They changed the menu! Granted, that is their prerogative and is fine. BUT if you are going to change the menu, then make sure you change it online. I chose the place because of the comfort food-type offerings. The Asian inspired menu was not what we were looking for that day. If we had known, we probably would have gone somewhere else and saved this menu for warmer weather.
The food itself was just ok. I remember being wow-ed there by dinner the last few times I was here, and this time, it kind of fell flat. The food wasn't BAD, but it wasn't great either. Certainly not worth what they were charging. We had the tator tot (good), the BBQ fries (also ok), the paella (eh), the noodle salad (eh), and the BBQ chicken (ok) and the tostada (also just ok). Usually, we are passing forks around, insisting that people try our amazing dish. This time, that didn't happen at all.
Service: I am not sure if it was an off night or if our waitress was just new, but the service was extremely slow, almost to the point of ridiculousness. She didn't write anything down, so one of our dishes showed up 20 minutes late (after we had to ask for it); she was slow to take our order, slow to check up. The couple next to us were sat after us and left before we got dessert. That didn't seen right. She was nice enough, but there was no spark, no smile, nothing inviting about her demeanor. Again, maybe it was just an off night.
All that said - the donuts still rock. I would go back for just those any time.

visited this fine establishment with some fellow yelp brunchers on sunday, during their pajama brunch. here is the breakdown:
plus five stars:
cute pajama gimmick - the staff had on their PJs and i was jealous. they were still very professional.
the place itself was great - nice atmosphere, very friendly, liked the layout (lots of rooms, had to walk past the kitchen - i love that kind of thing)
the food was EXCELLENT. i had the crabs benedict - great sauce. everyone seems pleased with that they ordered (and we all ordered something different, which never happens). the drinks were also very good - both the coffee and mimosas.
i liked that they kept checking up on us, since we had a biggish group. very attentive.
minus one star:
for some reason, our food took a while to come out. it wasn't a huge deal bc our conversation was keeping us busy, but it seemed odd. they did bring us free pork dumplings, which is always nice.
the price seemed high, but just for my dish. the other portions were substantial, but the crabs benedict was a few dollars more and came with no sides. it was still very good, but next time, i will order something more heap-y with a smaller price tag.

Yelp Elite Event @ Mizu Salon

I cannot even BEGIN to describe how awesome the staff was at Mizu. It is obvious they care about what they do while still keeping the client (me!) in mind. My stylist and colorist had a lengthy discussion about my hair color, wanting to play up my best features and improve upon the bad ones (in this case, hair that needed a little oomph with some color texture). The glaze was just the icing on the cake - giving my formally honey-brown tint a chestnut hue. It looked AMAZING. I never would have thought to do that, but it made all the difference, giving me a sophisticated, sexy look. My make-up was flawless and really completed the cut. Not many people know how to do make up for us mocha-skinned girls, but Jordan found that balance between just eye-make up and drag queen and I got compliments all night.
The space itself was very Willy Wonka. The ceiling and lighting gave it a modern feel that wasn't too jarring. Also, the little things made all the difference. The fact that the legs on the shampoo chairs lifted so your neck wasn't contorted and that each station was free of clutter, giving it an upscale feel and look.
As for Leighann and her party-planning skills - she really outdid herself. Upscale eats, towering cupcakes, drinks flowing like water, a buzzing atmosphere. As I watched the party in the mirror in front of me, I did not see a single person walking around empty handed and frowning. Thanks so much or putting this together!
Will I be back? Yes. Might as well face it, I'm addicted to Mizu.

Fritz Lounge
Categories: Gay Bars, Sports Bars, Breakfast & Brunch

The staff was wonderful: open and friendly. They made an effort to join the conversation, and while that can be horrible at times, it worked here.
We had breakfast sandwiches, pancakes, eggs benedict, French Toast, coffees, teas, potatoes, and other things I cannot recall but were also good. As latecomers joined us, there was no fuss or pouting. Their orders were taken, food was delivered and checks were handled with care.
If you need a low-key brunch place in the South End, try Fritz. Sure it doesn't have the booths of Aquitaine and those awesome Union chandeliers, but with great service, good food and really good prices, veering off the beaten brunch path may be a good change of pace.

Must agree with Daniel S. here, the drinks are strong. I got a gin and tonic and it made my teeth melt. There really is no decor to speak of, but I did like the laid back atmosphere and the bar tender was a little gruff, but he worked the attitude and it just added to the overall feel of the place.
I also never saw so many men in their 30's in shorts NOT at a company picnic. It is a great place to sit back and people watch. There is no loud music to shout over or people spilling drinks all over you as they dance.
Not sure if I would ever go back on my own, but because of the casual atmosphere and the insanely strong drinks, this was a perfect stop number 2 of "ExtravaGAYnza" 2007.

Service - good but not spectacular. Our waitress WAS patient with our group and didn't make many mistakes but had somewhat bad timing. Not a huge deal though - 12 chattering girls can prove to be a challenge to corral when all you want to do it get drink orders.
The selection - LOTS of egg-based dishes, no French Toast? No Pancakes? Really? The did have sandwiches and all that, but when you meet at 11, a burger seems not quite right. That said, the salads looked amazing and the omelets were large and filling. The potatoes were not my cup of tea, but everything else seemed to love them.
The atmosphere - surprisingly empty when we left around 12:30/1 on a Saturday. Other than that, it was pretty basic, tables, chairs, bar, floor. Nothing crazy, but still not boring and sparse.
Will I be back? With all the other brunch places that I have yet to try, I may not be back anytime soon. That said, if I find myself int he area at brunch time and hungry, yes, I would probably stop in.
Date

The staff was really accommodating (trying to find a container that would double as a bottle warmer (the martini shaker worked well) and setting up the tables to make room for the stroller), but changing a diaper is next to impossible here. We ended up changing him on the floor of the bathroom, which is just all kinds of gross. Poor kid.
A great place in general, but not baby-friendly from a logistical point of view.
