Totally dig this place... if you ever have an out of town visitor & don't quite know where to take them, say no more.... you can never go wrong w/Cedar Street.  I've had random friends from out of town visit & whenever I introduce them to this place they absolutely love it.  The Spazmatics & LC Rocks always put on a great show, the atmosphere is casual & down to earth & never pretentious which is what i totally love about this place & although I have been here numerous times that I've lost count I always have a great time.  Great people, great atmosphere, awesome shows & good drink rates is what keeps me a loyal fan of this place.  I would highly recommend it to anyone who's out looking to have a good time.  IT'S CEDAR STREET PEOPLE!!!! enjoy yo self.....

The Tavern..... w/a name like this I somewhat expected it to be a bit more Celtic.... but oh'well.  Anyhow... some friends n'I went here to watch the Yankees vs Phillies & for a sports bar I must say I was somewhat disappointed.  Granted there really weren't that many people here which I guess was a plus (it was a baseball game after all & not a UT game event) but what would not make this a favorite of mine to watch a sporting event?   the TV's, not enough of them & the ones that are here are not big enough, well at least for me.   This place is more of a Pub than a Sports Bar.  Don't get me wrong, this is/would be a good place to meet & hang out w/friends as the staff was really friendly & their rates are fair, I will definitely have to come back & try the White Wings but if I'm looking to watch a sporting event, this will not be one of my top picks.

wow....... this Ed P guy seems to be pretty optimistic in his review... a BIT TOOO optimistic if you ask me.  I like the Saxon Pub, it IS a good place to go & watch your local artists but to say that it's a pleasant experience is a bit far fetched.  The beers a plentifull??? (uh, is this not the definition of ....... a bar?).  The modest cover ($10-$15), well that depends on the band, sometims it is outright pricey for who is playing in my view but what makes this place a no go for me.... the space.  I have been here ALOT of times & every time there's a long line outside & it's always shoulder to shoulder inside, the "comfortable seating?"  Where?  As one can never find any seating (unless you get there 1+hrs before the show) much less comfortable seating so be prepared to stay standing throughout the show & yes..... do the whole neck jerking just to try to get a decent view of the band.

My opinion, the beers are standard, the rates are as expected in any music venue but as for the space..... hope that your band is playing in a more spacious venue.

Jeep Masters

WOW!!!!!!!  after reading some of the reviews here I must say I'm somewhat surprised as my experience was NOT as pleasant.  To begin let me say that I am very mechanically able that most work that any of my vehicles have ever needed I've been able to address personally but I am aware that there are quite some things that are indeed beyond my capability.

So.....  I have this Jeep Grand Cherokee in which the cooling fan stopped working so I reviewed the fuses, etc.... not knowing much on electrical systems I took my Jeep to Jeep Masters, well I can honestly say that I don't remember w/who I spoke with but the estimate to fix my Jeep was close to $800.... WOW!!!!! that was allot by my standards but then I had no working AC (w/100+ degree summer) & my Jeep would overheat when stuck in traffic, so much that "if" I sat in the drive-thru for too long my temp needle would redline so I had no choice but to start saving to eventually be able to have it repaired here thinking that they knew what they were talking about, you know the whole "Jeep Master" thing.

Long story short!!!  while I was still saving up for the repair I visited my older brother who is more mechanically inclined than I (he's the one who  taught me) & when he asked, I told.... WHELL!!! we walked over to my Jeep, removed the electrical fan, opened it up, CLEANED the coil w/starter fluid, tested it (it worked) & put it back on.... WAAALAAAA cooling system back on w/cold AC & it took all but 10-15 minutes!!!

And to think, Jeep Masters wanted to charge me $800 when it took less than 15 min & a few quick squirts of starter fluid to fix the issue.... Never will I go to this place nor will I EVER recommend it.  I will say this... "if" you have car troubles, always & I mean always get a second opinion & shop around for quotes.

WOW!!!! astonishingly enough a chain restaurant w/actually decent Tex-Mex......  We went here this past Sunday for a quick lunch & I have to admit I wasn't expecting much but  was pleasantly surprised w/their menu choices (yeah & the rates too).  The atmospere is nice, cool painting decor on the walls, suttle & not overly emphasized.  This may not be the place i'd recomend for a 1st time dinner date but it would definitely be a place to go w/some friends for a casual lunch/dinner.  The waitstaff was cool & the waiting period was below 10 min, although granted there really weren't that many people but a plus in my book.  I will definitely be visiting this place again.

I don't rightly know what to say about this place, I've read some reviews & have decided to love/hate much to a similar point of view by Chris L.  It's not that I don't much dislike this place, it's just that I don't much like this place either.  Granted in that it doesn't have the "trendy" atmosphere that some are acustomed to when going down to W 6th but then in actuallity THAT is what I like about it.  It's not as pretentous as most bars in the area (look at me I'm GQ & better than thou attitude) which after a while does get pretty old fast but then in my opinion it's a happy medium from the waaayyyy too young college bars in E 6th to the uppity yuppity wannabes in W 6th.  My point, this is an ideal place for H/H if you work downtown but be aware that the douches do come out at night, hahahaha.

So here's my spill on this place as it's just around the corner from where I work.  It's pretty bad when the food you get out of a "taco truck" is better than this place & that's saying a lot but then to charge $1.75 - $2.50 a taco?  This isn't a financial issue more than a quality issue.  The food here tastes like it was delivered to this location to cater to all the State Employees (SE) surrounding this location which would be a great idea if only they would factor in that they are catering SE's, explanation?  SEs don' t earn very well, sorry, just a fact, ask any SE.  In either case, for the quality of the food here, they should seriously lower their rates, maybe then they would get more business, just my 2 cents.

Elysium

Elysium...... what can one say about this place but be forewarned at what you'll come across.  I've never been here on any other night other than Sundays (80's night) so I can't comment other than Sundays.  Here's the soup, this is NOT a place to see "pretty people" (sorry, no offense to the 80's patrons of this place), if that's your bag go to W. 6th where that seems to be the ONLY thing W 6th is good for as they offer little in good music & even less in dancing.  I like Elysium because it's the only place where one can go & actually dance, holy dance floor batman, would you believe it, a dance floor where people actually dance & not just stand around & "try" to look cool (another reference to W 6th, ie, Union Park).  Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to dis Union Park & it's not like I myself don't partake into "that" crowd myself but every now & then it's nice to actually be able to go find a dance floor & a  DJ who caters to those who "actually" want to dance & not just stand around, ya know?   Anyhow, I will agree, the drink rates could be better it being Sunday n'all but then those who go here on 80's night don't go to drink or be seen (at least i don't), they go here as it's one of the last places who still play 80's music & offer the floor so you can break a sweat.......  gigiddy!!!

 Update - 8/14/2009
I want to follow up to "Colorful Rainbow s" (CR) review:   Not for nothing & I don't want to this to be viewed as my "championing" this place but I'm thinking that CR's review would not carry much merit in my book.
1.  her complaint about the time it took to get served, now I'll agree it does take a while to get served, I myself hate to wait an overly-extended period to get my food but when it's only 1 or 2 cooks making the food for the whole restaurant, this is to be expected not to mention they make your order as you order it, not in bulk as CR may be acustomed to.
2.  I don't know what Cali's mexican food may be like as i've never been but would've assumed they have good Mex food but this is TX & Tex-Mex has overpopulate the "mex" food genre so finding a decent place w/good food (at a decent $ rate) is not as easy here as it may be in Cali.
3.  In regards to seeing the staff munch on someone's else's plate, i'll admit, that does sound pretty gross but for someone who used to work in the Service industry (& those of you who have know this to be true), that happens at EVERY restaurant, they just hide it better, hahahaha.

As i mentioned in an earlier review of this place, "this is NOT a place you want to take someone on a date or to impress them", this IS however a place you may want to go to have good authentic mexican food which actually tastes like home cooking.  If you want fast mex food, go to Taco Cabana, if you want looks more than taste, go to Z-Texas or Pappasito's.

This may  not be the kind of place you may take someone on a date BUT it is a place to go for lunch w/good close friends who aren't as particular on atmosphere but are more into good food, OH BTW, did i mention cheap?  Working downtown it's hard to find a good decent place to go for lunch that doesn't involve fast food or require a cost of $10 or more, it's lunch people!?! hahaha.  Seriously though, i just find it hard to pay over $10 for a lunch that i have to hurry up n'eat w/in 15 minutes, i'll save that for dinner.  SOOO this brings me to this "hole in the wall', literally.  This little known place is in the East side of Austin, 10 min's from the Capitol & cheap to boot.  Now don't let the decor throw you off as it does scream "holy MeHico!!!" but it more than makes up w/their really good eats & the friendly staff.  They have over 7 lunch specials, all under $5.50 & the servings are plentifull, so "if" you ever find yourself downtown looking for a cheap Mexican place for a quick lunch, this is it for you.

    Happy Nacho's everyone..........

Who are these people who seem to give good reviews to this place?  Are any of them of Latin heritage or are they just sooo tired of burgers that you serve them up beans & rice & they scream ARIBA!!!!!  I can't comment on the 6th location but I will put my 2 cents into the one at Congress Ave.   I went there hoping to have a pleasant dinner via the "good" reviews this place seemed to have gotten but I have learned not to believe everything I read.  For starters we had the melontini (which i will admit was decent) as well as the mohitotini, (I think that's what it was called but it might as well been lemonade).  I don't know about you but if i'm paying $10 for a 2oz drink, I expect to be wowed, or at the very least pleasantly satisfied but allas, I was terribly disappointed.  BTW: on this note.... for anyone to claim Habana's drinks are a "good" rate at $10/drink?  I want your job cuz you must earn very well.  In either case, maybe I'm just used to Tex Mex, ya know being LATIN n'all that my standards of good Latin food are, at the very least comparable, to home cooking but this place deserves neither a good rating nor a second visit.  The black beans tasted right out of the GOYA can & the rice was pretty dry & brittle, as for the Pollo Salteado, it tasted no different than oil/chichen.  I half expected it to have some bite to it, some spice, some flavor & as for the rate, let's just say Benihana's visit was at least worth the money for the show.  In my genuine opinion, for anyone to say you get a lot of food for your money, you  must not have much of an appetite.  The portions are small & the rates are high, next time i'm in the mood for rice/beans, I'll go to Taco Cabana or just make them at home myself.
