Stumbled upon this place with the help of yelpers here! I think the restaurant is really cool with tons of newspaper clippings that give you a vibe of the history of Gainesville. It's pretty cool to read about Louis Pennisi himself, the restaurant, the Gainesville High school and how everythign has changed over the yers but this establishment still exists...for a good reason!
I ordered combo 1: 2 burgers all the way, fries, and a massive drink for $5.85 HELLO! That is a steal. Yeah it's not McDonald's pricing, but I think its a really good deal for downtown food. The burger has this really interesting crust from being fries in a cast iron skillet. the cast iron themselves look ANCIENT so you know that thing has been cured with TONS of flavor. I really loved the crunchyness of the burger, and how it's still juicy inside (no it's not a burnt crunchy...haha). What really keeps me from LOVING the burger is that the patty is too thin to give you a nice meatiness of flavor that fills your mouth. I shouldn't have to get a plain burger to get that. The toppings of onions, cheese, and tomatoes blend perfectly with the burger. But again, too little meat, too much bun!
I had the crinkle cut fries and they are pretty amazing. Crispy outside, potatoey and soft almost-mashed-potato es inside. You only achieve that by cooking in a high heat skillet for short periods. There was just a hint of salt to give it a kick, and I added some pepper and mayo and they were really something NICE.
All in all, good food, awesome price, but a little more meat? I'll ahve to update this once I try their thicker steakburger and shake...:). 3.75 stars.
PS: Bring hand sanitizer.

First of, I've only ever come here for happy hour. I think for happy hour, the prices are great, 3 friends and I ordered 8 dishes: crispy spicy tuna, spicy yellowtail, veggie roll, veggie tempura, kaisen ceviche, viva las vegas roll, kalbi, and lobster spring rolls.
Crispy spicy tuna: Like tuna tartare on a fried nigiri. Really crunchy, but the spice overpowered the tuna. Interesting concept, because you always eat tartare with something crispy (i.e., beef tartare with french fries). Tone down the spice, and rework the fried sesame nigiri but otherwise, interesting.
Spicy yellow tail and veggie rolls: Both were as expected, The rolls are small, but the veggies were very fresh and crisp. The yellowtail was all right.
The veggie tempura was great. Short story, our waitress wrote down the wrong thing and gave us veggie tempura instead of our veggie roll. She took back the veggie tempura but later on we were so impressed by the amount we ordered it anyways. The sweet potato was fried wonderfully and crisp, the insides were creamy and sweet. The same goes for the kabocha. They fried an entire stalk of broccoli (love the stalk!) and it was good, too. Didn't care for the massive onslaught of onions though. Everything was piping hot and fresh, just like the way tempura should be!
Kalbi was just like kalbi should be, but it had a really nice mashed potatos with a hint of horseradish. It really elevated the mashed potato and made it more light (?) The ceviche is a steal during happy hour times, with shrimp, scallops, and avocado. I thought it was OK, not the freshest but definitely great for happy hour. I like the lotus root on the las vegas roll, although I think there was too much mayo. The lobster rolls were probably my least favorite, it was a creamy lobster creation inside.
Overall, I enjoyed the food for happy hour prices ($37 for 3 people...) If I paid regular price I wouldn't be as satisfied. I even generally disdain fusion sushi, but there is enough variety to satisfy anyone's taste. If you want simple and clean, you can get it, if you want americanized, they have it too. If you're looking for the freshest fish possible outside of Tokyo, look elsewhere. My waitress was awesome, she always checked on us and filled our waters quickly.
