O'Paws

My dog has been going to OPAWS for 5 years and for an anxious dog she is totally at home there, and has her own special chair that she occupies while sunbathing and holding court. They take amazing care of her, especially during longer B&B stays.

OPAWS is a "dogsend" and "godsend"!  Just like it says on their homepage:

O'Paws in San Francisco is like no other dog day care you have ever used or even imagined. Our goal is to create a home away from home for your dog that is beyond a dog day care - a place where they look forward to spending time and where they feel secure.

After some mediocre experiences with dog walking and the inside of some of SF's pitiful day care facilities aka concrete jungles, we could not believe that a doggy oasis like O'Paws could exist in SF. The minute we met them we knew we liked them as people, then we saw their place and how happy our little puppy was with her new friends - and that sealed the deal.

They take care of everything! The dogs get a ton of exercise - which means long runs at various parks that are safely fenced, naps and time out if they are too exuberant, they also get fed (if needed), groomed (if you want), and best of all if you're in a pinch they will pick up and/or drop off your dog anywhere in the city!

It's great to know that you can drop off your best friend and not worry about their well-being. The folks at O'Paws are completely and totally proactive, and love their dogs (and ours) so much and really do provide the best dog daycare available today!

I'm addicted. Got food here 4 days in 1 week. Obsessed with the Mariquita Farm chicory salad with grated egg and FC bacon. Amazing. Soups all delicious. Breakfast sausage, hot Italian sausage, rabbit rillettes, finocchiona salame (amazing!) plus Della Fattoria bread and Andante Dairy cheeses at the right temperature? Great service, wonderful and knowledgeable staff.

Update - 3/10/2011
Just attended another Parties That Cook tapas event on Tuesday at the Zephyr Showroom. (An amazing space by the way - very cool kitchen design elements and it accommodated a large group) Great snacks and wine selection (Duckhorn) when we arrived, and it wasn't too long before everyone was gathered into the kitchen for a few quick demos and tips for the recipes. Lots of fun interaction and yelling out answers to Bibby's questions during the demo, then we split into our groups.

Our group was making mini chalupas topped with guacamole, chorizo and sour cream. Our chef helped get everyone on task (we were talking/drinking/having fun), and the recipe was really clear as was everything available on our prep table and we started cranking out the masa dough mixture. Once that was in the oven, we had fun making the toppings - and you could see (and hear) that everyone else was really into making their dishes and getting to know people on their team.

Once the first small plates began to be passed, the party kicked into high gear - everything was DELICIOUS. We all went back for 2nds and 3rds. High on my list of recipes to make at home are the chalupas (Team #Winning), the Curried Hummus with Cauliflower and Mint - yum, and the Ahi Tuna Tartare in Wonton Cups. Everything was delicious, everyone was really interesting and fun and the event was incredibly organized and staffed by a great team!

Parties that Cook puts on amazing hands-on cooking parties and teambuilding events for companies in private homes and rented kitchens in the Bay Area and in Chicago. I've attended a a few of their parties at Sur La Table in San Francisco that were so much fun.

It's a cooking class and dinner party all in one - and they take care of everything! We had a teambuilding event at the Sur La Table, and when you arrive they provide some snacks and wine, then they gather everyone to review the menu for the evening -- you get to choose from a formal sit-down menu or tapas/appetizers that make a meal.

We made these delicious Fava Bean Crostini with Mint and Shaved Pecorino that were out of this world! I still make them every spring when favas are in season and my friends love the recipe! We also made Figs Wrapped in Prosciutto with Melted Gorgonzola Centers that we roasted in the oven - a pretty easy recipe and the figs just melt in your mouth. Despite how hectic it seemed with everyone working, the food was delicious! It was a lot of fun - especially seeing everyone's culinary chops - or lack thereof!!

The chefs are totally cool and help everyone to make sure the dishes come out great and they even show you how to present them at the table. And you get copies of all the recipes - and I still use mine.

Parties that Cook also does lots of single events (I'm not single) that seem to be very popular. I've been in Sur La Table a couple times when they started the singles cooking parties and it sounded like it was pretty wild in the kitchen!"

Change your life and try their CSA. These are the best chickens and all its parts, and their eggs are divine. When I run out, I cannot bring myself to buy other chickens or eggs. Just no comparison to the quality and care  that is put into this farm.

Lots of wonderful and unique gifts, you could find something for almost any occasion without spending a fortune. Cute baby clothes, kitchen and bath items, cards, wrapping paper, tabletop pieces, and lots of fun French items.

Sometimes it takes 10 years to discover hidden gems in your own neighborhood. A friend brought over the lemongrass pork and chicken sandwiches and I devoured them. Where have they been hiding? In plain sight apparently! Maybe it's not straight out of Vietnam culinary playbook but the flavors are excellent - salty, sweet, tangy - all wrapped in a soft roll (no gum tearing on a hard baguette). Will be back for sure.

Serious issues here in my opinion. Could in part be due to growing pains, but here were some lowlights:

1) Staff just doesn't  have the training to match the level of restaurant this is aspiring to be (maybe in NYC it's different). Generally overtalkative, not educated on the product, no pronunciation skills in Italian (yes it can be taught for food).

2) the special pasta was a seafood carbonara tossed tableside. the guy who came out to toss it stated that the chef required 2 minutes of tossing the sauce with the seafood and pasta. guess what? The pasta was cold when it got to our plate. We mentioned that and strangely our waiter had no reaction whatsoever. It should have gone straight back to the kitchen.

3) Price. No problem with paying for quality, but the porcini and sunchoke side I ordered did not include a single porcini mushroom - a substitute had been made and no adjustment or acknowledgement of said substitution (and let me tell you fresh porcini are expensive) and when I asked the pasta tosser (see#2 above) about this change he disappeared to inquire and never returned.

4) Price (part 2). For every item on the menu we were told and then reminded countless times that the portions were small and you should order more (there goes the price). We were told the portions are small like in Italy. Well I can tell you having returned from northern Italy just 2 weeks before eating here that the portions in Italy were much larger. And please don't employ this technique ever - it is most detested by diners - even those who are willing to pay.

5) General Sensitivity. Hmmmm...several women are seated one of whom is wearing a birka. Maybe you shouldn't try to push the cocktail and wine menu at them numerous times. Get those social clues???? And not to mention ignoring our complaints about cold food or other issues mentioned by a nearby table that apparently never registered with anyone.

Disappointing for sure and certainly not worth the $300 price tag for 2 people (and this was wines by the glass!)

Love the extensive choices of salads, main courses, soups, sides, everything. Nothing is dumbed down food-wise and the ingredients are well-prepared and presented. The sandwiches and braises are next on my list but I could live off off the marketplace salads and sides. Truly amazing. Cucumber and mint lemonade is so refreshing! Prices are exceptionally attractive.

How is it possible I haven't written a review for Biondivino earlier? Ceri is truly "simpatica" (delightful, likeable) as Italians say and she is also incredibly well-versed in Italian wines. She has created a fantastic following based on her focus of lesser-known varietals of Italian wines, some of which were quasi-extinct without someone like her helping to create awareness for them. She can wax nostalgic about producers who are preserving wine-making traditions and who she regularly hosts for capacity-crowd tastings at the store. And did I mention Ceri has an incredible affinity for delicious French champagne? Get in there!

I was the first cappuccino they had made that morning. Bad sign. I guess all the hipsters are "dripping" these days. Sorry people, this cappuccino was milky, chalky and lacked espresso (despite confirmation that they contain double shots).

Maybe there is some revelation to be had with drip coffee - if so, why bother trying to prove anything else with an espresso machine. Get rid of it then.

Intelligentsia makes the best espresso and sorry I've had every single artisan roaster in SF.
