A friend of mine is an aspiring artist (sorry, buddy, but you're not there yet), and he insists on dragging me around to all the art-type stores around the Triangle. This is one of the decent ones.
The main problem with the place is its small size... Chances are you won't find the kind of thing you want. I wouldn't have thought that possible, but my buddy was a little disappointed that some specific type of charcoal he was looking for wasn't here.
The stuff they do have is pretty nice, and the staff is excellent. I actually managed to get into a neat conversation about emerging styles of comic art with the clerk. Fun times.

Chinese food in this part of the world is not known for its aspirations of authenticity or uncompromising quality, but even among that august set, New China Cafe is bargain basement.
You come here because of the prices, which are excellent. You can eat until you're full for less than five bucks all told. Rock.
For that price you get a heaping mess of meat and rice, swimming in whatever sort of sauce you favor. Sound familiar? It should.
Don't come here if you're looking for great Chinese food, come here if you're looking for cheap Chinese food.

This is an Indian buffet restaurant. That should not surprise you.
We'll start with the bad news. First, the buffet is small. It has few items of only a couple varieties.
That's it. That's all the bad news. Everything else here is great. The food is fantastic (as one would expect from Indian), fresh, hot, and flavorful (the chicken saag is particularly good). The service is bright and respectful. The atmosphere is great once you get past the strip mall facade. Even the price is extremely reasonable.
One of the best Indian places around.

A fantastic sandwich place, one of those restaurants that makes you wish you lived closer to it so you could visit more often.
The thing that really sets Nosh apart is their innovation. They have a number of sandwiches that I've never seen before and do not lend themselves to quick and easy description. I give full credit to whatever chef they have who came up with some of these sandwiches, they're absolutely delicious.
The food is really the star here, but the atmosphere is great, too. The smiles from the waitstaff seem genuine, and the ambiance is relaxing and playful. Very well done, gentlemen.

A primary function of The Book Exchange is to serve as an alternative place to shop for college textbooks, and on this front it only partially succeeds. The selection is monumental, true, and the staff is both willing and able to help you shift through the often-labyrinthine organization. Unfortunately, the two big universities close by are both extremely rigid about their textbook systems (for example, changing editions every year or so), making reused books less useful than one might hope. This is not the fault of the Book Exchange... They just happen to have the misfortune of fighting a system that's stacked against them.
The current trend of sandwich places seems to be towards customization, the sort of Subway model where you dictate the contents of your sandwich from the bread on up. The Philly Steak Factory rebels against these bourgeois machinations in a limited kind of way. You've got a couple choices of bread and a couple options on toppings, but in the end you will have a cheese steak, and you will bloody well like it.
The sandwiches are all right, though definitely not the best around. They are filling, I will say that, and I feel like you should walk into a place like this looking to be filled with hot meat, period. The intricacies of upper-class sandwich construction are not a concern here. We want cheese and meat.

On those rare occasions when I find myself in the right company in this part of Durham, Forest Hills is my go-to park for a game of Frisbee. It's not grand or overly spacious, but it serves the needs of the community and has a welcome amount of open space. I've also played tennis here a couple times and I was pleasantly surprised with the upkeep of the tennis courts, they're in great shape.
My brother and I have stopped by here a couple of times for lunch, and it's exactly the right atmosphere for a couple of guys looking to kickback with a good sandwich, a cold beer, and maybe some sports on the TV.
Their steak sandwich really shines, greasy and flavorful without being overly fatty, a real treat. They've got a decent selection of microbrews for such a small place, though they tend to rotate the selection less often than I would hope.
Ten points for the decor, which is fun without being annoying. The service is so-so at best, not a huge surprise.

Parker and Otis
Categories: Specialty Food, American (Traditional)
When I first encountered Parker and Otis I didn't know what to make of the place. It's a pretty odd place, in that country store yuppie kind of a way. I'm a fan.
I've never been to the restaurant part, always for the store. When I lived in France I got a taste for fine jams, and Parker and Otis is one of the best places around for those lovely bits. They've got a small variety of basic sundries, but everything is of universally high quality.
You pay a higher price for the gourmet-small angle, but that's to be expected. The staff is wonderful all around.

I love comics, and thus, comic stores. This is no exception. As a matter of fact, the only real problems I can attribute to this place have to do with it not being Chapel Hill Comics, which I feel some loyalty to. Actually, that's not true, I have another complaint: Not enough comics, too much comic-related junk. I don't want action figures, I want comics. Devote more space to that and less to the toys.
That's just nitpicking, though. This is a pleasingly clean, organized store in a genre of stores known for being dirty and disorganized. The staff is friendly and happy. The prices are standard. All around a very good comics shop.
