Landmark Inn At Fort Irwin

They don't allow animals anymore, so you have to use the on-post kennel (if there is room).

It's far, it's not cheap for visitors, but sometimes it can beat driving 35 miles from Barstow.

PCSing rate (with orders): $63 for a double room / per night
    Weekly dog rate is: $50

There are no weekly rates or long term rates. This hotel is civilian run and owned. The best thing is they are located on post.

There are NO rooms with stove top kitchenettes. The rooms with "kitchenettes" consist of an extra sink and counter space. I think all of the rooms have a microwave, fridge, and coffee maker.

They have a gas grill in the courtyard for guest use, but animals aren't allowed in there. There is a small lounge in the lobby with a big screen TV, free coffee and tea. No continental breakfast.

The pluses are good and quick housekeeping service, a real gated dog park across the street, right past the blue track for running, but there is no water fountain for the dogs yet. I think they are still adding to it. Just a gated dirt area with doggy bags and trash bins. Friendly staff and guests. Just not so long-term friendly prices.

If you want to save a LOT of money, the NEXT NEAREST HOTEL is Oak Tree Inn in Yermo, CA; 45 minutes away; special long term weekly rates for soldiers waiting for housing and no pet fee.

I wanted to give them 3 stars, but I think they deserve 4/5 since the only thing I really don't like is the lack of long term rates.

Update - 7/22/2011
I am updating my review to ask Kathy's customers to try this place out and add their own reviews. Kathy messaged me asking me to change or remove my review because they have upgraded their facilities. I never did get an apology for the bad treatment we received the day we went there. I am no longer in the area, so I can't see it for myself. Maybe one day in the future though.

So check it out and write new updated reviews.

Best of luck.

Oh and here are a the hidden filtered reviews. I haven't used yelp in a while so I'm not sure what the deal is with these filters and hiding other reviews. Some of them are great and a couple of them are like my original one and they were written this year.

Okay, so I've talked to a couple others who have used this kennel/daycare before. Apparently, NO ONE ever gets to see the back, no tours. Talk about flat out lying on the website.

The two days after our dog was here, she was really scared of noises and even us carrying a plate from the kitchen to the dining room. I don't know what and if they did anything, but I will not be back here. Neither will my friend who left her dog here for 3 days.

I don't normally write such negative reviews, but I have to be honest and my husband supports this review too.

    Doggy daycare prices are great.

From the website and reviews we've read, we were expecting a LOT more space for the outside daycare play area. It's very small, like 10 x 10. Smaller than our standard size military backyard. I was looking forward to seeing a nice big space with green grass, dog toys, and playpens. All they had was a small plastic dried out pool with some dirt in it and one puppy alone. There's no grass, only rocks. I do understand part of that, but it's just not inviting.

Their website states "Boarding Tours - Please feel free to visit our facility - Monday through Friday between the hours of 1pm and 3pm - Major Holidays excluded!"

So we went before 3pm for a tour.

I went in first and asked for a tour of the facilities. The person working was in a really bad mood when we came in. She kind of snapped and told me there is no tours allowed when they have so many dogs in the facility. She then said she's in a bad mood today and really busy getting some palette ready. She let me see through a window in the back, of the kennels, but that was it. After another couple came into pick up their dog, she was a lot more proper and nicer to us. We ended up leaving our puppy there for a few hours of playtime with one other dog and it cost us $5.

We might use them again since they are close to home, but we are still going to look around at other places in the area, maybe even Hop-town.

Bought our lifetime baby crib here. I'm 95% satisfied with the overall experience with this store. I wouldn't hesitate to come back if I needed additional baby furniture in the future.

I'll write more details later on.

As usual, Lucia is the best for beauty care -- BRAZILLIAN WAXING. I used to be a regular monthly client when I lived in the Bay Area, but now I can only see her whenever I'm in town. For the last year I lived 46 hours away, so I would only get to see her whenever I come into town. Now I live 8 hours away, I'll probably get to see her more than once a year, but not as often as I wish I could.

Thanks for always being there Lucia.

I've added pictures of Lucia's work. She did my hair for our wedding. She also cut my husband's hair the week before the wedding. My curls lasted all day, plus the next day I had a beautiful scattering of long loose curls. We LOVED it. I wish I could afford to fly to California and keep waxing with Lucia. Her prices beat everyone.

Lucia also gave me a facial before the wedding, it was very nice and I think my skin was glowing the day of the wedding. Ask her about it.

She gives great haircuts too. I got a haircut from her about a month and half before the wedding.

Can you believe that in Nashville, Tennessee it costs $75 for brazilian waxing? Go to Lucia. You will not regret it.

All of Lucia's prices are very reasonable and a steal for the quality of work you get.

Lucia's coming back for good! If you hurry, you can catch her before she leaves (then comes back for good).

I made my appointment with text messaging. Yes, I texted their line thinking Sraddha still worked there. Got a response that she was working tonight. Asked for a wax appointment after 6pm. Got a response and I confirmed a 6:30pm appointment. I would actually recommend calling because it IS more personal, but I was in the middle of a crazy work day and couldn't leave for even a minute to call. So I didn't know Lucia was back until I arrived at the door and she opened it with a big warm welcome and smile.

I had absolutely no pain immediately after the wax. No numbing. She is more thorough and takes her time with the wax and every area you want. I have to say I am really glad Lucia is coming back for good. She is fantastic and really knows what she is doing. I heard awesome things about her, but was only able to see Sraddha in the past.

Sraddha quit. I am much happier going to Lucia though. I wasn't coming back here for a while because I wasn't so into Sraddha and her waxing technique.

    GO SEE LUCIA!

You really can't beat her waxing technique, with the HARD WAX, at $45 and no charge for your first time or over 4-5 weeks growth.

Have you ever had a Brazilian wax with the hard wax the dries into a taffy like substance? It doesn't hurt at all! Maybe just a tiny bit. On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being extremely painful, the hard wax is about a 4 and the hot wax with cloth strips is about a 8.5 on the pain factor. Yes, it makes that much of a difference.

Waxing is addicting. The pain is good pain, comparable to tattoo pain. Except waxing is removing, tattooing is permanent.

I've got to go back here...it's so good.

Oh, by the way, if you haven't heard of Lucia's, her business has been around for over 10 years. There is no luxurious setting here. You drive to a little residential area with houses and apartments, her place is tiny and just big enough for one person to be worked on at a time. She takes her time and doesn't rush you through anything.

Personally I have only seen Sraddha Ferry, Lucia's employee.

    My friends have seen Lucia.

    They are both wonderful.

Not sure if you have the guts to go Brazilian? Just try it once, here.

Khoo Maureen, MD

I wouldn't even want her to deliver my baby. She was horrible.

I went to see Dr. Maureen Khoo for continuing my OB-GYN Prenatal Care as I recently moved here from another state. She is in my insurance network and recommended by my Primary Care Manager.

I was scheduled to see Dr. Khoo at 11:30 AM. I was there 15 minutes early and then wasn't seen until 12:45 PM. The receptionist, Andrea, was friendly and kind, but the Dr. Khoo did not apologize nor seem to have any background on me. They did receive my records ahead of time.

Dr. Khoo came into the room, checked the heartbeat of the baby, then answered a couple questions I asked. She was in the room for 90 seconds and then rushed out to leave.

During the 1-hour 30-minute wait, there were several people waiting ahead of me. I was the last person to be seen and after my appointment I noticed there was no one waiting to be seen after me. I believe Dr. Khoo rushed the appointment to go off to lunch.

I am very disappointed in her. This was my first time meeting her as a new OB for my prenatal care and I would expect more from Dr. Khoo if I had any problems during my pregnancy. I do not want to see Dr. Khoo again and hope no one else has to either.

I'm in the process of switching to a different doctor now.

Idle Spurs Steak House

Beautiful outside and inside. The place is huge inside, you can't tell from driving by or even walking from the parking lot. I love at the plants and trees.

SEATING, SATURDAY NIGHT around 7:15 PM
We were immediately seated, the lady said we were just in time for a window seat. Normally, I would face out the window, but it was just about dark and all I could see out the window was my own reflection. The spot was still nicer than being in the middle or the crowded corner nearby. The place got pretty full and it was very noisy just a few tables away. Next time we go, we'll ask if they have any tables in the middle of the restaurant where all the trees are.

We both ordered prime rib for dinner, with the choice of soup or salad to start with before the main dish comes.

SALAD
I love the salad and the choice of shredded hard boiled egg on top. I wanted to let her shred the whole entire egg on the top, but then I stopped her, I guess I was feeling greedy. I don't think it matters though, so next time I'm going to say I'll take it all! The homemade honey mustard dressing is SO GOOD. I mean, I've had other homemade dressings and this one really beats them all. I would go back just to get a salad to go.

SOUP
My husband got the new england clam chowder, it tasted pretty good, but more like creamy potato soup than clam chowder. I guess I'm spoiled by Monterey Fisherman's Wharf clam chowder though.

PRIME RIB
I got the 8oz, my husband got the 12oz. The prime rib is really the size you order. It was juicy and tender, instantly melts in your mouth with every bite! Since I didn't finish everything that night, I ate the rest the next day for lunch and it was still amazing.

SIDES
The prime rib entree comes with sauteed green beans (or vegetables) on the side, a choice of baked potato, homestyle potatoes, or rice pilaf, plus one slice of fresh garlic buttered bread.

TABLE SERVICE
Our waitress, Wendy, was really nice and friendly. We got bigger glasses of water because the small ones just don't do it for two people, new to the desert air and heat.

At the end, just after we asked for to-go boxes, it was about 8:45pm (they close at 9:00pm) we noticed several new parties coming in to sit down for dinner. Wow, I guess they have no problem seating until the last minute they close. Then after we waited for our waitress to come back, ten minutes later, the lady who was hosting (possibly a manager) came by and asked if we were waiting for our check and brought it to us. She mentioned, "Sorry about that, she got busy with all these people deciding to come in at the last minute."

We'll definitely be back here for dinner again. Thanks for a truly enjoyable dinner Idle Spurs.

Root beer freezes!

The drive through is super old fashioned. The person who reviewed previously must have gone there when it was broken. You still order at a menu speaker, but when you pull up to the "window" all there is, is a window. The food/money box you put your money on, closes then moves up and over the top of the store, then down into the cashier's/kitchen area. They put your food and drinks on there, plus any change. So you don't actually get to see or speak face-to-face with a real person. It's pretty funny. Drive through is still convenient, even if it's old fashioned.

Weekly/daily rates for PSCing Soldiers and families on the housing wait list. Driving speed limit (55 MPH) to Fort Irwin takes 45 minutes.

NO PET FEE!

Staff is friendly.

No continental breakfast.

They can make sure your room has a fridge, microwave, and coffee maker if you want all that stuff. Rooms are somewhat small, but it works for the price.

If you ask, they also provide daily $2 diner vouchers for their Penny's Diner next door. The hotel and diner are jointly owned.

The maid service is really slow, sometimes they don't even get to your room when you do actually want it done and are gone all day long. We only had full maid service once in a week because I didn't want to leave the room for it to be "cleaned up" everyday. When I needed to, I would ask the housekeeper down the hallway for extra towels, toilet paper, garbage bags, and also leave the trash in front of the door. I kind of wish we asked for a little discount since we we're NOT utilizing the housekeeping service everyday, but we didn't. I don't need my bed made up everyday. These days even four and five star hotels don't change your sheets daily, unless you specifically request it. There is such a thing as conservation of water.

After being here a week already, my dog has been acting strange the last three days. Today we could smell that distinct smell of marijuana in the hallway. I think it's tripping my dog out a bit. She is afraid of everything more than she was before. She doesn't even want to come out of her crate to drink water, so we have to put it inside the crate. Poor girl. I'm taking her to my parents in law in a few days, so I think she'll be better off with a couple other dogs to play with.

The best part is across the street is a nice big desert field, there is a FOR SALE sign, but no sign that states "private property", so I take our dog out there and let her run around free, while I walk along the dirt paths, she always stays within safe distance to me and stays along the path I take. The hotel's dog areas really suck. Also they don't have any trash cans outside. The dogs are only allowed on the rocks, not the grass (understandable since female dog pee kills grass). I don't walk my dog in the dog area because there is TOO MUCH DOG POO around there. I take her to the desert field. I can't believe the amount of people who don't pick up after their dog here or any hotels we've been to across the country. I pick up after my dog. It's part of my responsibility. It's like changing your kids diaper.

The Diner is next door, open 24 hours. Serving size depends on the cook that night or day. Every cook has been different. Don't forget to ask for Diner coupons for hotel guests only, before you eat there.

Rice plates are $8-9 each.

As we parked and walked to the door, a lady stormed out the door and said, "TERRIBLE SERVICE, but very friendly people". Huh, okay. We've been to a lot of other local Vietnamese Cafes in other areas and we never really expect great restaurant type service. It's more about the food. Maybe she didn't see the sign that said "pay at the counter".

I got a Charbroiled Beef rice plate with shredded pork and baked egg. It tasted okay, but then after a couple bites, I realized how rubbery the meat was and it stopped tasting good. Being pregnant, I have a pretty hearty appetite. I couldn't eat much of the meal.

My husband got a mixed Shrimp Fried Rice which smelled really good, the sausage was tasty, but I don't eat shrimp. He ate all of it, he's pretty easy to please, although he wasn't impressed with the prices and didn't want to go back there in the future.

The cafe su da (Vietnamese iced coffee) was premade, not fresh from the little brew cups. We had to ask for extra cream and sweeten milk for that and my Thai Iced Tea.

$22 for two dishes and two drinks. Definitely a little overpriced. Maybe that's normal for the area, but the food wasn't good enough for us to ever go back to this place again. I know there are a few other Vietnamese cafes along the block.

We'll keep looking for a Vietnamese Cafe/Pho place though.

UPDATE: My husband's stomach was all messed up from the food the next morning. Don't go here. I would imagine it was the shrimp.
