It's been a while since I've enjoyed a decent cheesesteak -- is it the Philly thing? And while steak-for-lunch is not my first order of business for lunch, the mushroom cheesesteak sounded so good that both my lunch partner and I ordered it. Oh, I was not disappointed, Peppi's.

Perfectly crusty exterior on the bread that was fresh on the inside, with a nice serving of ingredients in between the two sandwich buns. Cheesy, oozy, steaky, greasy goodness. I mean that all emphatically, with drool coming from my mouth merely as I think about it.

I look forward to more lunches here on the North Side.
Bonus: Try the River Water! *snort*

Tim Hortons

You know what's better than a Tim Hortons? A Tim Hortons that's also a COLDSTONE. OK, so now you know where my chain passions lie: donuts, breakfast sandwiches and ice creamed dessert goodness.

Tim Hortons coffee is pretty decent for a chain - if I see one during a road trip, I'm more apt to stop for a buzz. I don't mind the brew: it's not bitter nor too light. And the value is good for the breakfast combos (sandwich, coffee and doughnut). The one thing I will NOT order again is the wheat english muffin -- made the breakfast sammy too dry; this is the one time when I will fulfill my destiny of "go big or go home" with a plain white english muffin. I think I can handle the white flour. Also: maple-glazed donuts = yes.

Restaurant and its bathroom were clean. Employees were efficient, but somewhat detached (I stop short of saying "grumpy" because maybe it's just that *I* hadn't had enough coffee that morning). I had to repeat my order a few times, since the woman taking our order kept messing something up on her end of the computer screen.

OK, it's been over a year since I've been back to Prantl's, and seeing how my sweet tooth was OUT OF CONTROL after devouring a burger at Winghart's (nearby), I gave the shop another chance to woo me. It seems as though the bakery is putting a little more passion into their craft, with a considerable selection of goodies behind that counter. The customer service wasn't too shabby either, considering the crowd of people who swarmed inside around the same period after lunch.

The snowball treat that I had today was wonderful -- fresh, moist and with the perfect hint of sweetness to the frosting. Even the coconut was soft and sweet! I hope this trend of goodness sticks.

Meh. I hate when bakeries are mediocre. Especially when they are old school... and only a couple blocks away on days when a total sugar craving hits.

Up until this weekend, I've stopped in for a cookie or two, which were decent, but didn't knock my socks off. But calmed down my needfulness. Then, I finally tried this almond torte that everyone GUSHED over in unison, when I remarked that I wasn't all that impressed by Prantl's.

Oh, I hate when I give second, third, fourth chances to undeserving eateries. The cake was frozen. FROZEN, as in, the pudding layer had chunks of ice in it (and I ate it about 15 minutes after purchase). I let it sit out for a half hour to defrost, which if you are a baked goods aficionado, you know that frozen cakes tastes like cardboard, stale crap once at room temperature. So sad, I wanted -- and expected -- something so much better.

And for my 300th Yelp Review, I want to pass along some love to an organization that means a lot to me: The Western PA Humane Society.

Not only am I a volunteer, but I adopted my third cat (Zira) from the North Shore shelter. I also had the (extremely sad) experience of dropping off a stray neighborhood cat (that was, thankfully, claimed by his owner) and visited the clinic as a patient (well, my cat being the patient) for a follow-up veterinary check-up.

Everyone that I've encountered throughout my volunteering and adoption process has been wonderful! The staff and other volunteers undoubtedly LOVE animals, and are some of the most compassionate people I've met. I wholly support the Humane Society and their mission of being an OPEN DOOR shelter -- that means that they will accept ANY animal, regardless of species or breed or reason.

Also: check out their education schedule, most classes open to the public.

And won't you consider becoming a dog walker, bunny buddy or cat cuddler? :)

Southend Brewery & Smokehouse

Oh, looks like I missed a Charleston review!

Southend Brewery & Smokehouse probably fares better as a smokehouse. Beers were mostly uninteresting (especially the lights), but the special seasonal -- a coconut porter, which was wholly unique -- and the red were good. Nothing truly complex here by way of style or personality, but we did enjoy the sampler to try ALL the beers on tap (I hate when breweries only pick a select 4-5 beers to taste). I'd go back to try their other session beers or  new seasonals.

I really enjoyed my pulled pork sandwich (maybe because I've been craving one for WEEKS). Service was friendly -- we sat at the bar, and were attended to promptly. Bartender answered many of our questions about the brewery history and its beer, and gave us some additional recommendations of places nearby to see/do while we were visiting. The space is huge. And kind of annoying that the bathrooms are upstairs (especially after that beer sampler!).

AMF Noble Manor Lanes

Is this the first bowling alley I've been in since moving to Pittsburgh? I can't remember if I've been to one... let alone reviewed one. Alas, BBBS and Bowl for Kids' Sake brought me to Noble Manor Lanes.

It's a bowling alley -- not necessarily dripping with old-school personality, but not a place you'd want to dress up and order a martini either. Place feels cramped, loud and crowded. But it doesn't feel skeevy (that's a huge bonus for bowling alleys). Score keepers are automatic (has that been updated throughout the industry? I feel like there's a vintage alley out there somewhere, where you need to track your own score).

With a large group gathered for the charitable event, they quickly ran out of several sizes of women's' shoes (I lucked out with getting an 8), but the shoes were fairly new in condition. I couldn't find many house balls that fit my strength and my finger span either, but managed with a ball that was heavier than my preference, with holes that fit my fingers. Whatever... free weight-lifting. :)

The lane was SLIPPY (as Yinzers would say). So, careful if you get too close -- I stumbled a few times.

Snackbar: we were provided pop and pizza (it was only a Sunday morning!). The pizza was meh, but what I would expect.

For fun: Noble Lanes seems to promote heavily on its Cosmic bowling sessions for weekends.

Beer list is MUCH better. Lots of great crafts on draft -- and more in bottles.

Specialty cocktails, they promise, are coming soon. Although a little twitter birdie just told me that the bar has picked up some copper mugs. Moscow Mules, anyone?

I'll start by saying this: I really like James Street Gastropub. The location, the interior, the menu selection, the food, the service. All warrant five stars.

But, I'm assuming because of the popularity in their new open, there were some timing problems with our visit last weekend. The place was considerably crowded; and our waitress was considerably overwhelmed (not in service, but in all the tables we noticed she was taking care of). I don't know how she maintained such a laid-back, cool vibe about her -- I would have been tearing my hair out and crying behind the bar.

Speaking of the bar, when you hear "speakeasy" you think: oooh, fancy cocktails. There is NO cocktail menu. None. A glaring oversight (which is easily fixed, with the hiring of a great bartender). FWIW, the beer list isn't all that exciting either -- a couple crafts, but mostly over-tapped with the mega-brewers.

The food was excellent. I mean, this chef brought some interesting tweaks and upgrades to your everyday bar food. I drooled for 20 minutes after having just a tomato salsa that was side to beer-soaked potato chips. There were two additional "dips" for those chips too... tasty and interesting complement for the snack. My cod sandwich for my main course (served with a side of onion rings) was great as well -- large, fresh and crispy breaded (it did come dry; however, just ask for some tartar sauce).

There was a lengthy wait time in between appetizers and our entrees -- and the hostess even brought us a second round of our appetizers  during that wait... we refused the mistake (I'm assuming the kitchen ticket wasn't pulled). When another friend joined our party -- after we placed our order, but before receiving our food -- his burger didn't come until well after we ate... and not even until after I ordered and RECEIVED my dessert.

I can't wait to go back and try the sweet doughnut burger, by the way. If you want to skip that decidedly-gluttonous entree, go for the pineapple-upside down cake donut. Delicious.

Live Jazz was canceled because of the weather, but I'm definitely looking forward to a re-visit for more of that great food and tunes.

Habitat

I waver back and forth with Habitat, but I'm ultimately a fan of their food and their concept of locally-sourced products. I think the internal variance is because I'll have one dish or appetizer that's amazing, then another that's just so-so. For instance, I absolutely LOVED (and wanted more) of the homemade gnocchi with oxtail and the arugula salad. But the pork belly with chorizo was not sitting right with me (the chorizo was tasty, but the pork belly was... I don't know, just surprisingly bland). These were choices on my most recent visit -- others were similar with the one-off dish. Maybe I just need to stick with ordering ONE thing.

And it might be that Apple a Day dessert... oh, mama. I'm happy to report that even with a change in pastry chef, that these are some of the BEST desserts downtown.

I love the restaurant itself -- a very elegant space on the second floor of downtown's Fairmont Hotel (and when I stayed at Fairmont before moving to Pittsburgh, I appreciated its taken on local-sourced offerings for room service). The service is always wonderful -- far above what your expectations would be for a hotel restaurant.

I'll likely go back, but perhaps for more formal affairs (the before-a-show double date is a wonderful example). I feel somehow uncomfortable going in for dinner dressed casually (considering how it's a destination hotel for many business travelers). I definitely need to get in for lunch and try that "one cow" hamburger.

Heck yes, breakfast buffet! So, that's what this review is about... cheap, delicious brunch foods. TO STUFF YOUR FACE WITH.

Omelets made-to-order or freshly made potato pancakes (with ample helpings available of apple sauce or sour cream).
Sausage and peppers or giant waffles (um, that giant bowl is NOT butter, by the way, it is a generous dollop of whipped cream).
Coffee aplenty.
Every Sunday.

It's all there -- whether your breakfast tradition is German or American. And whatever side of "brunch" you waver, you will eat very well. Perfect for those days when you're feeling the MOST hungover and JUST CANNOT WAIT FOR YOUR FOOD.

Bonus: dessert table full of your German favorites. Or, you know, find some new ones.

Deli On North Avenue

This is one of my favorite sandwich shops in the 'Burgh -- and I only recently learned that it's a local chain. Well, thanks for being in my neighborhood, Deli on North Avenue!

I always try something new when I visit because their specialty sandwiches sound just too good to pass up (and you'll miss out if you order merely by their take-out menu!). I absolutely love their matched obsession with avocado as a sandwich dressing -- LOVE! The sandwiches are stacked with the best and freshest breads (seriously drool over how soft and awesome the bread is here), meats, cheeses and veggies that I can never make it through a half. But if you're a condiment person, know going in that most of the sandwiches (seemingly ones with chicken) I've ordered are made "dry." Have a mayo packet handy. Or, you know, ask for a smear.

There's a few tables inside to have lunch, but I recommend bringing your sandwich over to West Park to enjoy your beautiful North Side surroundings.

Bonus: you can purchase Boar's Head deli meat at the counter!
