Doc Burnstein's Ice Cream Lab

Categories: Desserts, Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt

Hands down, the best ice cream place ever!!!!

This place is crazy good. They make all of their own ice cream and boy is it good! Creamy with the most amazing flavors you have ever had! The reason it is called an ice cream Lab is because they come up with all sorts of unique flavors. Everything from decadent chocolate and caramel to Banana, Wine flavors, even a Guinness flavored on around Saint Patrick's Day! And I must emphasize that their unusual flavors taste exactly like what they are meant to be! Not overly sugary or fake, but real. Also, if you get a group together for an event you can rent out the lab and create your own flavor of ice cream!!!!!

Really though, going here for a scoop of ice cream is just a wonderful treat. They have plenty of seating, they serve you in little glass cups like at old style soda fountains, and there is a delightful toy train that runs around the molding on the ceiling.

In all, this is one of the gems of the SLO area.

I really enjoyed my meal here, it wasn't spectacular, but it was definitely enjoyable. We stopped here after a long walk up and down telegraph hill, and we were hungry! And sense we were in North Beach, why not have some Italian food! It was lunch time and the place was just about empty so we were able to get the whole patio to ourselves. Well, not entirely to ourselves, we were kept company by the local tabby cat, Gustavo. Who was very cute and kept rubbing up against our legs while we ate. (I think he was just waiting for us to drop something) We had a relaxing lunch with a nice glass of chilled white wine.  It was a great place to end a great day.

We came here again for Brunch and I had an even better meal. First of all, let me say that there Mimosas are to die for! Fresh squeezed OJ  (they did it while we watched) and they didn't skimp on the champagne. mmm, so tasty. They also came by at the end of out meal with a plate of fresh fruit as dessert on the house! I wanted to give them a big thanks for making this Sunday brunch very memorable. :)

Question: What to do when you wake up at noon on a Saturday  after a party?
    Answer: Go out to breakfast!

Thanks to yelp we found Cafe Mossant which is a lovely breakfast place that serves large omelets and never ending coffee until 2:30. The Cafe is open and airy.  It had two levels of wall to wall hardwood floors connected by ramps. The chairs were very comfy and each table had a small rug underneath so that the chairs could move easily.
The wait service was very friendly and greeted us with a big Hello! when we came through the door. The menu is simple and strait forward, nothing fancy, just good hearty homemade food. We ordered the mushroom, onion and cheese omelet with avocado as well as french toast. I really liked the french toast, very cinnamony and thick. The hash browns could have had more flavor, but in general everything was good. And it was reasonably priced at about $10/person for a filling breakfast.

Live Jazz!!!! That is the very reason for my 5 star review. They have fantastic live jazz on their patio every Sat from about 3-6.
We happened to be at a shop across the way and we heard the jazz through the open door. I absolutely love jazz music, particularly classic and New Orleans style jazz, so when I heard that crisp trumpet sound waft through the streets, I was hooked. We went over, grabbed a table in the back between the bar and the open patio window, drank Chimay, and listened to the music for hours. They also get another plus for having a fantastic Belgian beer on the menu!
Everyone was so nice, in particular the bartender, Scott. He was an absolute character with a bald head and handlebar mustache that always crowned his friendly smile. :)
I would definitely come here again!

MMMMMMM
The Burgers are so good!!!!

I have been looking for the best burger place in town and I think I have just found it! The burgers are large and juicy with all sorts of toppings. From your usual cheeseburger to avocado and mushrooms to bell peppers and jalapenos! Be warned these burgers are big, juicy, and filling! We skipped the fries and opted for a side salad, which is a substitution they made happily.

In general this is not your average burger joint. Walking in I felt a little under-dressed. But then I looked around at all the families, and people in t-shirt and jeans, and I figured I was ok. This is definitely a clash of two concepts I would never have put together. The interior is dark, with a red ceiling, suede and fur covered sofas, dark wood, interesting mood lighting and black and white Hollywood glamor shots hanging from frames and flashing through a slide show on a bigscreen TV. But then you look at your table and right next to the candle mood lighting are two large bottles, ketchup and mustard. Also, if you prefer a nice red or white wine they have a wonderful selection to pair with your meaty burger.  :P This place is just delightful. I would never have combined these two things together, but boy does it work. Bravo, and I will most definitely be back.

Very Tasty. It is a small place tucked away from the main street and I honestly wouldn't have know it was there without the rave yelp reviews! We had Panang Curry, Pad Thai, and Tom Yum Soup, all of which were delicious. I'm on the search for the best Panang Curry out there, so anyone with suggestions, let me know.

There was one thing that I am still unsure about. They had a TV on and while we were sitting there they started a movie. Usually, I'm against TVs in family restaurants, because it cuts down on the conversation. And undoubtedly our table was sucked into the story being developed on the screen. However, it actually sparked some lively conversation with out waitress. She chatted with us about the movie, which lead to other stories and small anecdotes as the even went on. I am thankful that it didn't completely dull our night, but I'm still not sure that this restaurant should have a TV in it.

A quick side note, notice that almost my entire review is about the fact they had a TV and not about the food. It was very good food, but the TV distracted from it. I think I would have enjoyed the meal a bit more without it.

I was a little hesitant when I walked in here. It was a friend's recommendation for a great burrito, but if I were to judge on looks I would say it was Asian food. So, don't let looks deceive you, the burritos here are AWESOME! They are big, and full of meat, beans and ricey goodness. mmmm. They also have a very good veggie burrito options for you vegetarians out there.
I do want to come back here sometime and try some of the other menu options. I mean any place whose table condiment selection includes ketchup and mustard next to Sriracha and Choula is worth a few trips. :-)

Yelp Drinks Week

I actually stumbled upon this place a while ago while aimlessly wondering and really wanted to come back and try it. So, thank you Yelp Drinks for giving me the motivation to come back and check it out! My favorite thing about this place is that the only entrance is in an alley way! It feels so hidden and secret, even thought it was packed and is obviously a local favorite.

I had two fantastic martinis here, both on the yelp drinks menu. My favorite was the Rendez Vous. It is crisp, refreshing, sweet, light and not too dry. This drink was the perfect relax-after-work-cocktail.
I also tried the Bouquet which is beautifully made. A bright lime green color, a little foam on top, and a flower to top it off. It tasted like a key lime pie, or maybe lemon meringue. Whatever it was, it was tart, and refreshing.

I would definitely come back here for the ambiance and the fantastic drinks.

This place gets points for fitting in a group of 4, without reservations, on Valentine's day. We sat at the bar, but they served a full menu and it was a little more relaxed than the rest of the restaurant. Also points for the tasty drinks and helpful bartenders.

I would highly recommend the BBQ ribs (great BBQ sauce) and the Cowboy steak both with the mashed potatoes. Oh, and the bread! Make sure that they give you plenty of bread. I'm not sure why it was so good, but there was something about the buttery warm goodness of their rolls that is to die for!

On the down side, the fish was lacking, and sadly, the rice was crunchy! I'm sure this was due to the busy Valentine's day rush, but it was a little disappointing.

All in all, we had a very nice meal with some very good cocktails beforehand and a lovely glass of wine during the meal.

mmmmm this place is really tasty.

To be up front, the service is not speedy, so if you want fast go elsewhere. However, if you don't mind having a leisurely breakfast this is a great option! Also, it is a bit pricey. But you have to consider that you are getting a locally grown, mostly organic and fair trade meal. I'm willing to a pay a few dollars more for that.

I had the day's special which was apple cinnamon pancakes and WOW! There were full apple slices and half pecans baked into the pancakes. We also tried the goat cheese omelet, which was exceptional and an on-the-fly breakfast sandwich (we asked for a sandwich off of their lunch menu with an egg included.) The wait staff was friendly and helpful and the meal, very satisfying. I would definitely recommend it.

One other note, you can miss this place when you drive by. The sign looks like it belongs to a catering business next door. So keep your eyes open.
