The Blue Plate

My personal belief turned out to be spot on, as we were seated immediately at around 7:30 - totally awesome when you consider the month-ahead booking Delfina asks of me. Not that they're totally comparable, but sometimes fancy dinner's just fancy dinner, you know what I mean?
They plopped a plate of piping hot homemade foccacia in front of us, which was absolutely delicious. We slammed those back and then started by ordering some white wine (French?) and splitting the padron peppers with goat cheese and almonds. The wine - perf. The peppers - kinda boring. Not bad, just underwhelming.
This was only my second time here and I'd made a mental note between the two visits to try the meatloaf everyone's always raving about. So I ordered it, doi. Ball n chain got some the pork shoulder, and both came very fast - a bit too quick if you ask me, I don't like feeling like I'm being ushered out.
The meatloaf lived up to its name. I don't really get the whole concept of meatloaf in general, but this one seemed flavorful and fragrant. The bed of mashed potatoes upon which it sat was a delicious mountain of moist mashy creamy potatoeness - only problem I saw here was a few unmashed chunks, which always make me feel like someone sliced a couple of toes all up in there. Grody!
Service was great, atmosphere dim and lively, everything quite nice. I like this place. I like hearty comfort food. Though the menu might be a tad uninspired, it's nice to know you'll be getting a big plate of comfort food, none of that size-of-a-dime classy shit. Dunno.
Yo, how come the plates aren't blue?

I immediately found it too loud and a tad too warm, but got used to both the noise and heat quickly so ain't no thang. Furthermore, wine was immediately on its way. The menu was long and appealing, and I always enjoy a place that involves ordering many plates, so I started getting pumped. To be honest, I'm a total country bumpkin when it comes to non-Western world food, so I let Nick do most of the thinking. Vindaloo what?
Nick and I started by splitting the tomato and cucumber salad, crab momo, and the lamb appetizers. I found the salad, though simple, still exciting to the taste (lime juice, pepper, and what? what's your secret, MK?) and quite refreshing. Fresh tomatoes, unlike some of you have reported below. The lamb was fantastic, with an intense spicy aftertaste that had my t-buds all dancin around. Oh boy. The crab momo dumpling things were also delish - fresh, clean tasting crab. No artificial shit here.
For our main dish, we split the chicken saag with rice. Here's where I went fucking nuts! That shit was so delish, I started shooting off at the mouth like a foodie about its taste and consistency. But sers dudes, perfectly sweet, chickeny, creamy. I've never had anything so fantastic in my life.
To be honest, we went to brunch here a week prior and weren't completely wowed, due to the lack of Nepalese/Tibetan food on the brunch menu. Brunch was good but menu uncreative. I won't ding 'em for that though, I have no complaints and am confident brunch will improve with time.
Atmosphere here is quite nice. Dark red walls make the place cozy. Everything looks nice and new. Waitstaff is polite and on top of it. The couple who owns the place seem very sweet.
Boy am I glad they swapped Le Metro for this gem. I sure do recommend this place to anyone in the neighb.

It's all true though - the salespeople are really, really nice and the clothes are pretty much the cutest on Haight. Go here if you're ballsier than I.

However! There are often pieces of furniture on sale here for upwards of $300 that you could've sworn you saw at Goodwill for $15. Now, I certainly understand how much time and effort these antique-hunters put into tracking down awesome, hard to find goods, so I won't even ding 'em for it. The awesome sales, rare finds, and varied things to look at completely make up for it.
I rarely take the time to dig through the clothes because I just don't feel like it most of the time... but I've definitely browsed and come across designer labels for low prices, and in varied sizes to boot. Everything's sort of That Girlesque in style, but honestly, what else do you really need, folks?
I'm generally not really into antique stores because they smell bad and charge much much much too much, but this one seems to avoid both these faults, for the most part. Come here to window shop, at the very least.

I got a bowl of fake chicken chow mein while Nick got some sort of rice plate. We were underwhelmed by our food's appearance, contents, and taste, though not quite disappointed, I guess. This is food that people who don't care about food would like, and I suppose we weren't really in a caring about food kind of mood... dude. This is food for people who desperately want people to know what kind of people they are.
You wouldn't believe the kind of fuckers that go here! To my left, some sort of organized gardening group talking about harvesting shit and all the nature's candy they stuffed in some massive cornucopia. Straight ahead, a child pornographeresque looking man telling his dining companion that the leader of his animal rights group wasn't charismatic enough. Off in the distance, an entire table of people conversing in sign language. The list goes on. The signers I was less worried about, but as for the rest of the folks in this restaurant, everyone was desperate to be loved and everyone was desperate to let everyone know that they had invented this place. I don't think anyone actually likes this place all that much, they just really like the fact that they're the type of people who should like it.
I feel kind of bad for whoever actually invented this place. I think they just wanted to open a nice place with good, healthy food and lots of vegetarian options, without all these meanings people have assigned to it and to themselves. Jesus. This is worse than people who love fixed-gear bikes.
