Solo Eye Care & Eyewear Gallery

With so many positive reviews, I hesitated about writing another one, but here ya go!  Solo Eye Care is one of the coolest eye salons in the city. Their selection ranges from a few basics to a cornucopia of stylish, personable frames. The staff is friendly, they ask for lots of feedback during the exam to get your prescription right and take their time to hep you select the best frames for your face and desired style.

They can be pricey. And of course I picked out frames that were on the pricey side so it took me forever to make the commitment. I've been 'eye stalking' a pair a frames for almost a year, visiting the salon just to 'check' on them. I finally worked up the nerve to say "I don't care if there is famine, world hunger, earthquakes, etc, I'm treating myself and buying these glasses."

So don't be afraid to go a few times to browse, they're laid back and won't try to hard sell you.

The place is definitely worth a visit if you're in the market for new eye wear.  My only not-so-pleasant comment is that I had to call to see if my glasses came in.  I would have thought that they would have called me, that was disappointing considering the level of service I received when I paid for them. Hint: Don't pay in full, leave a deposit as incentive to call you when they come in.

Overall, a pleasant experience, I'm enjoying my glasses and I see.  The few extra bucks were well worth it for a pair of glasses that I don't mind wearing all the time.

Image tip:  You should reexamine your eye wear every couple of years, not just for the prescription, but also because styles change and eye wear can update your style.

Out of all the things I wanted to purchase this summer, a roof was not on the list. So the thought of roofing my lake house was a bitch from the start.

After receiving a few quotes, a friend introduced us to JE Roofing. The quote was reasonable, the customer service fantastic and their references all checked out.

The roof is completed and I am soooo happy we went with JE Roofing!  The project was seamless. Their crew was amazing and my roof looks great.  There were no surprises and everything went off without a hitch.

JE's crew came up from Lansing to roof my Wisconsin  house. Its about 90 minutes away so they stayed in the area until the project was fully completed.  They worked hard and long and I actually missed them when they left. But I know that I will see them  again because I have a leak in my Chicago roof and I wouldn't trust anyone else to fix it.

It was 10k plus project, on a steep roof, with multiple peaks and the only thing that got damaged was a motion light.  Not bad, I'm actually impressed!

JE Roofing is one of the few contractors that I've hired over the years that actually fixed more than they eff'd up!  LOL but true.

I would not hesitate to work with them again or refer them.

IMAGE TIP:  Its hard not to write a review and not include an image tip since I am an image consultant, so...  JE hit it right down the the shirts they wore. Watching them work in their orange company t-shirts added to their professionalism as a company and as a crew. But, of course, I didn't mind when they took them off and exposed a little muscle:) Hey, image consultant aside - I'm still a woman!

So... I ... uh .... sorta outgrew my workout clothes! Guess maybe I should have been working out more often. Anywho,  I decided to give this "workout" thing another chance. I headed to the Nike Outlet in Pleasant Prairie Premium Outlet store to stock up and I hit pay dirt!

Excellent selection and extremely well priced. Well worth the trip.

Here's what you need to know:

1. Take a list, as a practice, I never shop without a list.  It doesn't have to be detailed but at least know what you're looking for or you'll wind up with stuff you don't need.

2. Stop in the visitors  office and try get a discount book, they say its for AAA people but if you're from Chicago, you know what to do -LIE and look sorry you forgot it. Better yet, say you gave it to your wife.

3. Try a few things on.  I say this because it is an outlet so the fit is not always consistent. In some things you may be a medium in one shirt and a small or a large in another.

4. Make it a day trip, there's lots of other stores up there as well. I'll review as well and post my finding on yelp.

Oh yeah, the weekends are insanely busy but still worth the money.

Whole Foods Market

I really tried  but I wasn't impressed. The place was ok but the staff was a little freaky, hairy and overweight. Not a good look around food.

After woofing down a hamburger for lunch, I went there committed to "healthy food." Instead I found  overly expensive groceries and the "natural" looking staff  didn't look all that healthy.

This was my second time visiting Whole Foods and I thought it would be better than the first.  It wasn't.

Maybe its an organic thing... the big vegetables make the employees big.   I dunno!  I got TFO and left empty handed.

On a more positive note, I didn't get towed like a lot of other reviewers are reporting.  Maybe its because I was in and out in 10 minutes.

If you're not into organic food and people, save yourself a trip.

Call me  class-less but I go to the Chicago Symphony hall  for their Jazz series, not all that classical stuff.   Last night I attended an outstanding  performance of The Count Basie Orchestra. It reminded me ... to remind you ... about the Jazz series.  So if classical isn't your thing, don't completely rule the place out. They have lots of other things to offer including movies accompanied by the orchestra and special performances by artist that you might be interested in.

Inside Tip:  As with most concert halls the seats are wide and its a little tight in there, arrive a little early so you can check your coat. My  "made me run late husband" didn't check mine because he wanted to get seated right away and didn't want to stand in the coat check line, so I had to enjoy the performance with a coat on my lap!

Alcala's Western Boots

If you want to get in touch with your inner cowboy, there's really only one place to go - Alcalas. Its my favorite place to shop for real cowboy boots for myself and my clients.  So understandably, what started as a trip to find a pair for a client who actually was a cowboy, turned into a shopping event for myself.  So that backfired but I got a pair kick ass pairs of boots!

The largest selection in the Midwest, there's lots to pick from. From basic Laredo to "WTF" Lucchese, you'll find every type of cowboy boot imaginable starting around one hundred and going into the thousands.

Alcalas is like a museum with cool artifacts, western attire, giddy up stuff and of course rhinestones. Their selection boosts over 10,000 pairs of boots and their customer service is unbelievable. They will condition your boots for free, for life.

Best Advice:  Bring a couple of pairs of socks, light and medium weight, park across the street in their free parking lot, and eat before you go. With all those boots, it can be a little overwhelming for the novice and it's impossible to run in and out so plan on making it a day trip.

Another bit of Advice: If you buy a pair of boots make sure you get a wooden "boot taker off"  thingy, it comes in real handy on a Saturday when you just want to crawl into bed.

And yes, you can wear cowboy boots in the summer!

Saks Fifth Avenue Men's Store

A good place to shop for upscale casual menswear and business casual if you're in a leadership role but frankly I wasn't impressed with their more traditional business attire. The quality was great, but the selection was limited ...  and a bit uneventful.

Meh, there are other places where I've seen better but Saks for Men is still a solid place to shop. Plus, I like that its all men only so I don't get sidetracked when shopping for my clients:)

I found a few casual pants and other "items of interest" for my client that are going to be welcome additions to his wardrobe, so that was a score.

Ask for John, he  was extremely helpful and at the same time laid back, tell him Robin sent you:)

Intimacy

Lock and Load!  Intimacy is one of my favorite places to get naked and shop for bras that offer both beauty and function.

Their selection is awesome, their bra fitters knowledgeable but their customer service is horrible if you  walk in without an appointment.

Intimacy is also pricey, about a buck and a quarter for a bra, but its totally worth it when you're a 32F, vain and don't want to wear something that looks like a granny bra. another plus is that they will tighten your bra for free when it straps get too loose.

Overall, its a good place to shop if you want something sexy that you can stay in for more than an hour. But, if you thinking about visiting Intimacy, make an appointment, or you might wind up standing there like WTF for an hour!

BTW - my fitter was named Rochelle, we picked out some great bras and had fun doing it.

Verizon Wireless

I actually go out of my way to visit this Verizon store.  Aside from the fact that the guys are always well dressed, they're extremely helpful, knowledgeable and provide excellent customer service.  They even offer classes on how to use your smart phone.

This particular Verizon store is also a corporate owned store and not a reseller, which means they can take care of your problem or question right there on the spot.   No run around, no crap and no bull.

My go-to guy is Cameron, but everyone in the store is helpful.

Tell them Robin from Tailored Edges sent you!

Digital Hub

Digital Hub is superior in quality and service and they've printed the best marketing material my company has ever had!

They met my deadline, helped me secure the files from the graphic artist, made sure that the format was right for the best quality and they even made suggestions on the finishing.

Digital Hub delivered the kind of service that made me feel like they were a part of my team.

Bottom line, as an image strategist, my printed material is a part of my company image. And everything they've printed for me looks great.

Digital Hub will make your marketing material shine!
