Unique Hair & Nail
Categories: Hair Salons, Nail Salons
In the realm of barber shops, salons and on-the-cheap clip chains, Unique is, well, kind of unique.
I'm not sure what they offer on the "female side" of the shop, but it appears to be a pretty fully service salon with nails and those heat lamps for your perms or whatever. The men's side is akin to an oldschool barber shop though, and it's great.
There are three barbers there, and I've had two of them do my hair. Both did a great job, which isn't something I could say about any of the other places I've visited north of Brandon. I'd recommend it to guys who want a good cut, some good sports talk from cool older barbers, and a good deal. A haircut with hot shaving cream, straight razor neck, ear, beard and eyebrow trimming was 17 or 18 dollars. I forget exactly.
Completely worth the price if you're in the New Tampa area.

My wife would be a very happy woman if I was able to rate this above 1 star. If that was the case, it would have probably meant we'd actually been able to eat here. Even if the food is disgusting, at least I could have given them a 2/5 based on the fact the floor was clean, it wasn't infested with roaches, or something comparable.
However, this store is apparently never open for business. Once we went early afternoon on a weekend and were greeted with a dirty, hand-scrawled sign that claimed they were closed, and the staff would be back in "10 minutes". Ten minutes from when, we didn't know. Thirty minutes later (my wife had a considerable pastry craving), no one had returned, and I left in disgust. My wife left with me, mostly heartbroken.
Against her better judgement my wife later escaped the house, probably filled with guilt about giving this establishment another shot. She arrived at 8pm, and though their sign states they are open until 10PM, they were long closed for business.
Apparently other people have eaten here. I can't see how. It's a grueling journey to the middle of nowhere just to arrive. Those who don't perish on the trek are greeted by closed doors and no explanation.
As the clever gentleman from Holland we met while waiting the first time commented on the sign and our wait: "Maybe they're on French time".
For now, they're probably on borrowed time. I'd be surprised if this place stayed open for much longer. Who knows, maybe they're already closed?

Absolutely gorgeous park.
A great, tranquil and out of the way park. Worth the occasional drive. It's almost always empty, and very well maintained with a secluded wetlands boardwalk, greenhouse, butterfly gardens, gardens, etc. A totally awesome place in the Seffner area.
Hell, I even got married here. ;)

Nice sized, locally owned record store. From their website and ads, I was concerned they focused mostly on metal, and although they have a pretty big metal selection they also have lots of other music from rap, alternative, country, pop and rock.
They also carry vinyl and used DVDs.
The only downside is that their used section is a bit low. Used sections are my favorite part of a record store, so I'm a bit biased.
Also the used discs they did have were a bit overpriced in my opinion, often around 12 dollars. The new discs were 14 or 15 dollars. This didn't really make sense to me, and was unfortunate.
Considering the shop is probably the only thing going around the Zephyrhills/Dade City area it's a pretty good bet for locals. The owner was a really nice guy, and I was happy to overpay for a used CD I didn't really want that much just to give him a sale. ;)
If you're in the area, check it out. Its next to the ABC Pizza on Gall Blvd AKA 301.

I'd love to rate this higher, but it's just not possible.
By no means am I a flea market / swap meet afficionado; I just occasionally visit them to browse for fun.
And although Fun Lan's swap meet is open Friday-Monday, it might as well not be. To be fair, I went on a Friday, and maybe that's a "slow day", but this was awful. This place is more decrepit than the back room at an off-brand thrift shop. Aside from the 5 or so produce vendors (who may have been a good deal, I didn't check them out), the rest of the "vendors" were basically people selling crap they'd found in other people's garbage. Not that I'm against dumpster diving, and making some money off of other's waste, but Fun Lan was shockingly bad.
Head to this place if you think a homeless person's yard sale sounds like a blast. Otherwise, it's best to make the drive to a better Flea Market.

It's hard to write a fair review of this place since the staff is so horrible (you can bear this out on other, apartment specific review sites), but here goes.
Pros: Beautiful landscaping, convenient location, decent sized floor plans although they're old and relatively lackluster for the price, nice amenities (pools, fitness center).
Cons: Overpriced for what you get, outdated apartments, poor sound insulation coupled with college student atmosphere, horrendously inadequate and dangerously under-lit parking, absurdly conniving staff.
It's hard to put into words how bad the staff is here, but as an example we knew they'd try to screw us out of our deposit, etc when we moved out. That's just the way they are. They will nickel and dime you and try to steal from you (again, this is all backed up on lots of apartment specific rating sites). Needless to say, if you move here, be prepared to C.Y.A. We had to threaten to sue them to get our deposit back as they tacked all sorts of fraudulent charges onto our move out assessment. We got our money back, but be warned that you will need to exercise due diligence.
Otherwise the grounds are absolutely beautiful and surrounded by woods. The apartments themselves offer decent sized floor plans, but are outdated and cramped compared to newer complexes.
Not a horrible place to live, but if you have time to look around you can do better.

Large selection of urban music covering Rap, R&B, Jazz, Gospel, etc.
Quite a few movies including standard mainstream stuff, and more specialized black music DVDs. They have a selection of vinyl, and a surprisingly large cassette section, neither of which I really looked into.
Pros: Pretty decent selection for the genres covered. Fair prices on new discs. Maybe good prices on vinyl/cassettes. Locally owned, which is always good to support.
Cons: Only a few genres. No selection of used music, which is usually what separates a small record store from the competition. Kind of difficult to find, even though it's on a main road.

I used this place a few times when I lived in the USF area. Overall, I'd recommend them as far as honesty and fair pricing.
There were a couple of issues with lack of attention to detail. Once I had gotten tire work done and had to return to get a faulty installation corrected. This wasn't a problem, and the staff was very helpful and willing to admit their mistake and fix everything for free. Another time I was unable to pick my car up, and they left it unlocked in the parking lot... and this isn't the best part of town.
All things considered, I'd recommend them for routine auto maintenance.

For my money, this is the best place to get college text books in the area, although the only others I know of are the on campus bookstores at USF and HCC and Gray's Books which is near this place.
Books and More is smaller than the others, and provides a more personalized experience. The prices seems to be either comparative or cheaper than the other places, but that's hard to judge considering the nominal number of books I, as one person, have had an opportunity to price there.
Aside from the text books, they usually have a small, but choice, selection of used novels and non-fiction books on hand. These are very cheap compared to cover price, and if you go at the right time you can find some really interesting things for a steal.
They also carry used music CDs, stationary, and other odds and ends for college students.
Overall, a great place that is much more rewarding to support with my hard earned loan money than the bigger, more coporate alternatives.

The price is reasonable, and the portions are good, if not gigantic. Neither of us is a very heavy eater, and we get away with splitting an omelet and an order of french toast a la carte, with leftovers for lunch.
As I said, I don't like dining out, so it's safe to say I'm not really a "foodie". I can't rate the food as well as some of you are probably able. But I'm used to pretty decent home cooking, and this is up to par. People used to greasy spoons or, worse, Denny's will be pretty happy here as Mimi's food obliterates their offerings.
Never had the lunch or dinner, and I've never used the bar, so I can't comment on either. But for breakfast, this is a solid choice.
