Soigne Restaurant & Wine Bar

After eating at Soigne, I felt like Lot's wife.  Rather than glancing back and turning into a pillar of salt, instead I ate a few small plates and imbibed so much sodium that I felt like my body turned into the Salton Sea.  Damn, the cook here has a very very heavy hand with the salt shaker.  It essentially ruined what might have been a decent meal.

To continue with the negatives:  My pisco sour resembled nothing of the sort--no egg white, no bitters. Just some bottom shelf pisco and what tasted like Rose's lime juice and a cheap maraschino cherry. Not good.  Other cocktails were also quite weak.  Don't expect cutting edge mixology here.

A few positives:  It's a nice room.  The waitstaff is pleasant and salt of the earth Brooklyn (more salt, but this time in a good way).

I won't be back.

Maybe I'm just too much of a tightwad, but $100 for a few small plates, a beer and a glass of wine is excessive.  That's my main gripe--the pricing.  Otherwise, the food is good (not great), the service good, the vibe nice (good music) and a decent crowd for a tax day Tuesday night.

Though it didn't knock my socks off, it's about as good as it gets in the District (ouch).  No complaints about the food, service or vibe, but nothing memorable either.  Nicely designed chairs and comfortable if your dining companion has snagged the banquet.   I don't order it, but I'm still trying to understand how tea can cost $16.

You'll forget the cramped quarters, the waitstaff passing by 4 inches away every few seconds, the chill shiver coming in the door if you're sitting in front, as soon as the meal begins.  The food is a solid five stars--unforgettable  The service, four stars, the space itself, three stars.  But I'm weighting the food most heavily and we're rounding up a bit to five stars overall.

The food:  Stellar.  From the tasty chicken liver pate with mushroom amuse bouche, to the polenta soup with sofrito and rock shrimp, to my braised ox tail and creamy whipped potatoes, to my sweetheart's perfect bass (with a b  ;-)  ), dessert that blew my mind--olive oil cake with mascarpone, fantastic coffee, and nicely made cocktails to complement one of the best meals in a while.  The freshly baked herbed flatbread served with ultra-creamy fresh ricotta is a joy.

Compliments to the chefs working so visibly in close quarters to the patrons appreciating their work.   A most welcome addition to Bklyn and Smith Street.  Nice restaurant bar scene.

Quite simply as good as it gets.  Knowledge old school butchers, incredible quality meats.  But also outrageous home made ricotta, mozzarella, and delicacies like imported Italian sweet peppers.  Excellent service, and they deliver to a fairly wide area.

Which is too bad because how hard is it to make a decent root beer float that actually makes it worth the calories and sugar intake? Lacking both vanilla and root beer flavor.  Tasted almost like seltzer.

Grilled ham and Swiss was pedestrian. Coffee egg cream nothing special.

Great vibe, and nice folks. But with the food not happening, I won't be back.

Still a showstopper.  They change the menu frequently, but thank God always keep the pork sliders. Best restaurant in Bklyn, and one of the best in NYC.

Stop reading this review, and get your mouth over to Traif. Now!

I'm giddy about this restaurant. Superlatives can't come close to describing it.

This is some of the most innovative food anywhere, especially if you love the pig meat.

Any place that serves a cocktail rimmed by crispy bacon bits has to be special. The drink is called Rude Little Pig. It's lapsang infused, smokey, wonderful and strong.

And things just kept getting better.

It's primarily small plates, which oddly also come with relatively small prices. The two of us pigged out (no pun intended), and the bill came to barely $70 ($90 when you throw in the cocktails). We should have skipped at last 2 small plates to keep the gluttony under control. But no regrets, everything was so delicious.

    Some standouts:

    - The bacon-infused broth served as an amuse bouche. I'd like to baptize myself in it.
    - Brussel sprout salad with grapes.
    - Bacon wrapped dates stuffed with bleu cheese (good lord, so good)
    - BBQ short rib sliders -- the best ever
    - Spicy tuna tartare served on crisp eggplant discs with a chipotle mayo sauce. Transcendent.
    - The ribs in strawberry-cinnamon BBQ sauce drives me to make that drooling Homer Simpson sound.

And, of course, how could you possible miss the bacon doughnuts.
They also serve a surprisingly good bite of pineapple with pomegranate juice, molasses and lime zest that made me happy as a dessert amuse bouche.

The vibe is Williamsburg. More than three quarters Billyburg hipsters--tats ga-lore, beards, skinny black jeans, flannel shirts. And no shortage of body modification.

Professional friendly service, open kitchen, and a nice back yard.

If you're not making Traif your next restaurant to visit, something is very wrong.

Uninspired sushi (it all tastes the same with soggy wrappers), tasteless almost inedible noodle broth, cardboard udon,  weak edamame.  Every year or two, I always forget the mediocrity and go back, only again to be disappointed.

Such a shame, because the people who work here are ultra nice, and the shop is quaint.

Folks, if you think this is good Japanese food, I have a bridge nearby to sell you.

Easy solution:  walk a few blocks south to Hibino or Ki.

Just a review of their beer selection (not the food): Kinda disappointing.

Don't get me wrong, it's nice to see some lambics and geuze that one doesn't ordinarily find at the local bodega--but even there it's slim pickins.

Where's the Czech beer?  They sell over 30 German beers, but only 1 Czech beer?  A serious oversight, and not just because my wife is Czech  ;-).

I was hoping for better.   Didn't try the sandwiches.

Sorry to come off as a NYC restaurant snob and burst everyone's bubble.  El Quenepo is just not so wonderful, especially when the high price is factored in.

I did have an excellent tuna steak in an Asian-style sauce. However the rest of the meal was either just average or mediocre.  The cocktails were less than average.

If this restaurant was elsewhere I'd give is 2 stars, but considering the culinary mediocrity that is Vieques, this is about as good as it gets.
