Stop reading this review, and get your mouth over to Traif. Now!
I'm giddy about this restaurant. Superlatives can't come close to describing it.
This is some of the most innovative food anywhere, especially if you love the pig meat.
Any place that serves a cocktail rimmed by crispy bacon bits has to be special. The drink is called Rude Little Pig. It's lapsang infused, smokey, wonderful and strong.
And things just kept getting better.
It's primarily small plates, which oddly also come with relatively small prices. The two of us pigged out (no pun intended), and the bill came to barely $70 ($90 when you throw in the cocktails). We should have skipped at last 2 small plates to keep the gluttony under control. But no regrets, everything was so delicious.
Some standouts:
- The bacon-infused broth served as an amuse bouche. I'd like to baptize myself in it.
- Brussel sprout salad with grapes.
- Bacon wrapped dates stuffed with bleu cheese (good lord, so good)
- BBQ short rib sliders -- the best ever
- Spicy tuna tartare served on crisp eggplant discs with a chipotle mayo sauce. Transcendent.
- The ribs in strawberry-cinnamon BBQ sauce drives me to make that drooling Homer Simpson sound.
And, of course, how could you possible miss the bacon doughnuts.
They also serve a surprisingly good bite of pineapple with pomegranate juice, molasses and lime zest that made me happy as a dessert amuse bouche.
The vibe is Williamsburg. More than three quarters Billyburg hipsters--tats ga-lore, beards, skinny black jeans, flannel shirts. And no shortage of body modification.
Professional friendly service, open kitchen, and a nice back yard.
If you're not making Traif your next restaurant to visit, something is very wrong.

To continue with the negatives: My pisco sour resembled nothing of the sort--no egg white, no bitters. Just some bottom shelf pisco and what tasted like Rose's lime juice and a cheap maraschino cherry. Not good. Other cocktails were also quite weak. Don't expect cutting edge mixology here.
A few positives: It's a nice room. The waitstaff is pleasant and salt of the earth Brooklyn (more salt, but this time in a good way).
I won't be back.
