during a recent shopping excursion on union street my friends and i were in need of serious refueling and betelnut was just the thing we wanted. we were a group of four and found a table in the bar to sit at without waiting at all, even though it was a busy saturday afternoon.
i began with a dark and stormy cocktail, which is ginger beer topped off with a dark rum... SO good and perfect for daytime! we ordered a few of the appetizers and were so happy with them we didn't need anything else. we started with the crusted calamari and the short ribs. both were excellent. the calamari is fried with chili's and served with a spicy and sweet sauce. the short ribs are so tender they literally fall off the bone. we also had the green beans which were very flavorful and a perfect accompaniment to the proteins. at the end of our meal we were happy, full and pleased with our quick and tasty lunch and were ready to resume shopping.

i had dinner at andalu on a saturday night with a group of six. we made reservations and were able to sit in a table right in the window with a great view of the street, and the perfect size for our group.
we started with cocktails; i had the sangria (very good with lots of fruit) and then we moved onto the tapas. we started with the ahi tacos and the beef sliders. both were excellent, and much more filling than they appear. the crispy mac and cheese came next, which was pure not-thinking-about-calories bliss. by the time the spare ribs, fries and pork tenderloin arrived i was full! but i heard from my friends that all were excellent. i wish i had saved more room for the desserts after reading about them here. all in all, a fun place to begin a weekend night.

i have shopped at mother's market on a weekly basis since moving to this area almost a year ago. they have an excellent selection of local and organic vegetables and fruits. i have not seen produce like this at any other store!
they also have a great selection of health food including gluten free, dairy free, and raw selections. there is a juice bar where you can get anything from a hang-over cure to shots of wheat grass. i also enjoy their cafe which has a great selection of healthy and hearty soups, sandwiches and full breakfast men, where you can dine in or take .
they also have a huge assortment of every type of vitamin or supplement you could want and a very knowledgeable staff if you have questions. i also frequent the body care section which stocks many great natural skin care and hair care lines.

Fusion sushi is located in a small strip mall on 17th street. I stumbled upon it accidentally one night. It is a small spot, but has a good selection of rolls. I was impressed by the service and thought the fish was good quality. It is pretty inexpensive and a good place for a quick meal. They also do take out.

i have been to 3thirty3 three times and always have a great time. i have taken out of town guests to watch the sunset and they always are impressed by the view and the food and drinks, as well. the drinks are strong, and tasty. their signature margarita is my favorite.
they have a great selection of appetizers and sliders. my favorites are the truffle chips, thai calamari, hummus and the blackened ahi slider. for an entree i usually get a fish dinner, either the sesame seared ahi or the potato crusted halibut. i have not been disappointed yet.
it can get crowded late night on fridays and saturdays, but if you go early in the evening you won't have a problem getting a table.

I have been getting my hair cut and colored by Amber at Surrender for about two years now. She does a great job. My hair is wavy, which I have always struggled with, but she has shown me how to wear it curly/wavy with very low maintenance. She also does great blow-outs and gets my hair stick straight. The salon is very relaxing and I highly recommend it.

I really enjoy Confidential because they have great food and good music. Most nights there is a DJ spinning. The food is tapas style and I have been on certain nights (like New Year's) where they will have a set menu. Every time I am surprised at how good the food is.
Confidential is the kind of place you come to for dinner, but then stay to dance the night away. If you don't like music and the lounge vibe, then this place is not for you. Confidential is not very big, so it feels very cozy and intimate, very different from some of the Gaslamp's other bigger bars/clubs.

I have been eating at Ichiban since my college days at SDSU and while I see many people on here had bad experiences, I have always loved it. The fish is fresh and some of the best I've had in Pacific Beach. I have never tried any of the cooked food, but always eat the sushi and rolls. My favorite is the Fried Calamari, which is filled with calamari and topped with tuna and a spicy sauce... big enough to be a whole meal. The service is good and the staff is friendly. This is the perfect place to go after a day at the beach, as it is very casual. While it is true the Sushi chefs are not Japanese, they are really good at what they do, so who cares?
We almost didn't eat here because Koi is located in a strip mall, and doesn't look like it would be that great of a dining experience...but it's a good thing we did. Koi is excellent. We loved their food. The fish is extremely fresh and "melts" in your mouth. I especially enjoyed the salmon, which was amazing. I highly recommend this restaurant if you are looking for really fresh, good sushi. Also the service is excellent.

I think it's a really great place to see live music because the main room where the performances are is pretty small, which gives seeing a band there a very intimate feel. There are a few other rooms besides the main room and an outside patio, so if you need a break from the crowd or just a spot to rest your feet and sit down, you can always find it. The bartenders are really great and you never have to wait long, or deal with any attitudes. The pours are generous and the prices are very reasonable. I especially love the 40 oz Stella Artois. Dress is casual and most of the patrons are very laid back. This is one of my favorite spots to see a live band in Orange County.
