My first departure to Departure was at the Yelp event, so I am somewhat torn because the Yelp event at Departure was fabulously 5 stars. But, I'll have to sum it up overall as a 3.
I should mention I have not attempted to get in here for dinner, which I understand requires dressing up (more than the average Portlander does), and reservations. Or, they won't let you on the elevator, which I was told is guarded by hotel bodyguards and you can't fake your way in.
Food = 4 stars (good, but very expensive normally. in my case it was free since I was at a party, so I am not complaining. p.s. I am told to come for happy hour only by other Yeeps at the party who have frequented this place.)
Attitude Problem = 1 star (unless I am ranking the amount of attitude as a problem, which is 5 stars)
Service = 5 stars (friendly and fast)
Views = 5 stars
Look, no offense to those who pine for the big cities where you actually dress up to go to dinner - Portland is kind of lacking that element, and this place gives you that chance. Once in a while, it feels good to glam up and go out on the town. But the attitude is misplaced in Portland.
Anyway, the waitress in her purple Space Mountain Barbie outfit was clearly miffed when all the Yelpers poured out of the event and spilled out into the normal bar space. We must have looked like rabble rousers, based on the surprised dirty looks we were getting. I am sure they were wondering how we made it past the security guards and onto the elevators.
Clearly we didn't belong, and put a dent in their view of the usual customers. Anyway, I ordered a cocktail to be polite since I was wasting a space on their futuristic purple couch.
What bothered me is when I stepped outside onto the patio to further enjoy the amazing city view, she rushed outside after me and said "Oh, I thought you had left!", demanding payment. Like I would steal their $5 happy hour cocktail. I know she was just doing her job, but seriously?
If you are in the mood for dressing up and playing like you're in LA, a hoity toity environment, a great view, and decent food (for a price) then give it a try. It's ok, but I can get five star food and service all over town without the attitude, so...

I love me some hot pot, especially today when I have been fighting a cold/flu bug that I can't seem to shake the last remnants of.
Seriously, if you are in need to some delicious, fresh, healing soup full of spices and fresh veggies, this is the place to come. But, you have to find it first, and that part seems to be a bit of secret. It is located off 1st Avenue directly in front of (or behind, depending on your perspective) the Lovejoy Fountain Park (which is near PSU). The park fountain was built in 1966, which is when I imagine the office building, where Hot Pot is located at ground level, was probably also built. So...while the decor is certainly dated, the food is not--fresh, hot and tasty!
You can mix your own seasonings and add whatever you like to your pot, but to knock the cold right out of you, I suggest one of the three spicier broths (indicated with a pepper symbol on the menu) and toss in lots of fresh garlic, fresh onions, and hot pepper sauce...and cure what ails you (except bad breath). The man sitting next to me was coughing furiously from the spicyness of his own concoction, while mopping the sweat from his brow every few seconds--and I could tell he loved every drop! As did I..enjoy!
Employees are helpful, even for newbies, so don't be afraid, and prices a very reasonable $7.95 for all-you-can-eat.

The plates were beautifully prepared, with the food presented like precious little artworks on the plate. Beautiful food is always an added bonus. So the presentation gets 5 stars.
Onto the food - The recipes are very creative. Possibly a little too creative for some who prefer ordinary recipes, but if you like a melange of flavors and unexpected dishes, this might become one of your favorite restaurants. I enjoyed pretty much all of the dishes we sampled (crab, pumpkin, pear salad, pork ribs), but my husband only like about a quarter of what we ordered, so this place was a huge disappointment to him. He also said the beef (which I didn't try) was fatty and tough. Since that was his main entree, he left pretty much feeling still hungry. I felt like the place has "Iron Chef" style foodie ideas and recipes, but like Iron Chef -some of the pairing of ingredients works, and sometimes it is just a little off. I think they pulled off most of it, to be honest, but like I said, if you aren't into the more unique dishes this might not be your place.
I hope they extend their menu, or mix things up from time to time. The menu seemed small. Not to compare them to Toro Bravo (but I can't help it since this seemed like a tapas style restaurant), but Toro's menu has about 30 more items on it--if you are doing smaller plates it is nice to have more of a variety. I know most restaurants can't stock a zillion ingredients or they would go out of business, I am just hoping they will branch out some or offer more seasonal recipes. Food - 2 stars from my hungry hubby, 4 stars from me.
Our service was just fine, friendly, and a little slow at spots but I think they may still be working the kinks out. Service - 4 stars.
Ambiance - The dining room is average side, concrete and wood, so it is open and loud. They should remove the boxes of wine and beer stored under the wall of seats along the back wall. Diners sitting in those seats will end up kicking the box under their chair all night, which is uncomfortable. Ambiance - 3 stars
Overall, I would give this place a 3 to 4 star review. I will go ahead and round it up to 4 as I think they are probably still getting things worked out, and will improve as they figure some things out. I would try them again once they have been opened a bit longer.
