Get Shaved Truck

Categories: Ice Cream & Frozen Yogurt, Food Stands

If I had to pick one shaved ice for the rest of my life, I would gladly choose Get Shaved to be it.

I really don't know what makes it so good. Could it be the syrup? The ice? the truck? I have no freaking clue....

All I know is that the shaved ice is so smooth. Usually when you get shaved ice or a snow cone, it feels like you're chomping on little pieces of ice. But the shaved ice here tastes like cold fluffy pillows. Ahhhhh yeahhhhhh....

They're on twitter so try to catch them! A lot of times, they are right next to a Kogi Truck. And those two together makes for a very wonderful time.

Denny's

This one is a bit hard for me to write. There have been so many memories inside this Denny's with one group of friends. Many late hours have been spent here talking about practically anything in between.

But that was a long time ago. And the hang out has moved to other locations. So when I went this morning, a big rush of nostalgia came back in my head. And reality set in of how bad this location has become.

I've never really liked ownership here. It seems I'm almost guaranteed bad service when the owner is around. Shouldn't it be the other way around? This morning we were seated and NOBODY came for our order. Not a "Hey I'll be right with ya", or anything. And who sat us down in the first place? The owner, of course. I'm guessing a server wasn't assigned to our table. We eventually walked out after 30 minutes of waiting.

On our way walking out, I overheard the owner talking to one of the servers as to why we were leaving. Terrible. You should be talking to us, not to your staff.

I'm giving this place 2 stars on the count of the food being what you'd expect at a Denny's (if you're lucky to get any), and past experiences when it actually was good.

King Taco

Ahhhhh.... If there ever was a staple of LA cuisine, King Taco would be on the top of many people's list. It has gained an iconic status as other Los Angeles joints like Pink's Hot Dogs or Philippe's French Dip.

The one on Pico is the one I go the most. It's in a pretty shanty neighborhood but there's a reason I go there. Mostly due to proximity, but I know exactly what I'm getting when I order. The quality is great every time.

The tacos and burritos are to die for. Meat is deliciously seasoned and it compliments the onions, cilantro, or whatever has the honor of touching it. King Taco is also known for it's fiery red sauce. It is crazy hot, but it burns so good.... There is so much flavor that it really goes well with what you eat. It comes default on the tacos and burritos so be aware if you're not a fan of the spice.

Mmmm I'm craving it as I'm writing this....

House of Pies Restaurant & Bakery

It's pretty bold to name your restuarant based on one type of dessert. You really gotta be known to be the shit at what you advertise. Does House of Pies do just that? Semi-so.

First things first, all the food, except pies, is standard affair. Anything you'd find in a typical diner is all here, nothing more. Burgers, eggs, bacon, chili, etc, it's all here. I wish there but a better range of foods, but you really can't expect much from a little diner.

On the other hand, their pies are really good! So far, I've had the Butterscotch and the Chocolate Cream. The chocolate does down silky smooth while the butterscotch is a Werther's Original fanboy's wet dream.

What I like about this place the most is the late hours. If you're in the Los Feliz area, you have no reason to go to Denny's. It's way better!

The Griffin

As this place turns out to be, it is my new favorite bar.

It is nestled in the town of Los Feliz, where the usual vibe of LA, or better yet Hollywood, is a little dimmed down. If there was a word to describe the area, it would be mellow.

The Griffin carries that vibe over with a bar that is sure to be a pleaser for anyone looking to have a great time. It seems that a lot of the patrons are really easy to talk to and the bartenders are just the same. The layout of the bar feels cozy with plenty of seating and a couple fireplaces. The bouncers do a good job in regulating how many people are inside at once. Because of that, there's a lot of space to roam around and you never feel crammed.

As for the drinks, it's really a bargain. They offer two full bars, making the lines very convenient. The hard liquor is a little on the pricey side, but the beers on tap are only $5! How good of a deal is that!?

Although I'm probably passing dozens of bars on my drive to Los Feliz, this place has gotten me with a chill vibe and great beers to boot.

Simply put, I still haven't had a better, most satisfying bowl of ramen noodles than the one in Daikokuya.

The one thing I always get is the Daikoku Ramen. It's their special dish with a broth that the angels would be proud of. Just thinking about it makes me all warm inside....

Other dishes that are tasty are the fried rice and the cutlet bowl.

One bad thing about the joint is how hot it can get in there. Their AC sucks and it only gets worse when there a lot of people and the griddle is up and running. I don't care though. I'm focused on my noodles. Don't bother me....

Ouch....

You know, you place has the potential to be something great. It's right next to all the clubs and bars and drunks are begging for a great place to eat after. Unfortunately, it's not this one.

I suppose if you were really drunk, it really doesn't matter what you eat because everything tastes good anyway. But for the rest of the semi buzzed and sober people, we should have better.

The joint can be backed up a lot. And it's not because there are a lot of people. It's because there's only one man on the line making EVERYTHING. Sometimes the cashier steps in to help out, but that's only when there's no one in line. So expect to wait a good while.

Food sucks. Plain and simple. Don't mean to be harsh but my burger was dry and unflavorful. Fries sucked and my buddy's tacos were alright. You're better off getting a hot dog off the Hispanic lady cause those are the bomb.

In closing... uhh I wouldn't recommended it.

La Frite

An absolute perfect place for a date! Totally cute with all the little lights. Be sure to get a patio table because it gets a little loud inside.

The place is to resemble a French cafe. I'm not too sure why the place is called "the fry" but that's beyond me. Having considering that, the portions are what you might find customary in European cuisine. This ain't no Claim Jumper portions here people. It's just the right amount. However you might feel a little gypped over getting the coke. For $2.75 they bring a tiny 8oz bottle.

The food is wonderful though. Serves fresh baked bread with butter in the beginning. I had the Chicken Cordon Bleu, while my friend had to Shrimp and Lobster Ravioli; both of which were really tasty. The chicken is less on the batter than most typical ones you'd find like Mimi's. But the chicken was very tender and the cheese was very gooey which makes everything happy! And make sure you get the "Pommes Frites" as those are really good as well.

Service was good but we could have been paid a little more attention. The server came just enough times to keep everything in order but couldn't get her when I needed to flag her down. I guess it's because we were at the corner table outside where there wasn't as many people as inside. All good though.

Definitely check out. And bring a date!

I would like to say that this place popped my fried plantain cherry. I'm glad I came here to experience it first.

PLEASE DO NOT LET THE LOCALE FOOL YOU! Although there is a higher percentage of you getting mugged (and by higher I mean a fraction) in this area, a gem is buried beneath it.

I had the Jerk Chicken that came with rice, beans and plantains. I really loved how all the flavors went so well with each other. The combination of the spicy chicken with the sweet plantain is to die for. Also make sure you grab some guacamole cause that shit is the bomb.

Decor is really cool and comforting. A lot of the artwork is a bit on the crazy side, but it fits well with the food and the clientele.

If you're in the mood for a good time, Cha Cha Cha is definitely the place to hit up!

Sugoi Life - CLOSED

Sugoi Life is freaking awesome! To the hardcore otaku, it might be a bit of a gimmick. But for American otakus and those who are just excited about random Japanese products (points at self), this is the place.

Everything and anything that relates to Nintendo, Gundam, Sailor Moon, and whatever Japanese Anime is hot right now is here. Food is here too. Simple snacks like Pocky and drinks are available for purchase. They also have these random towels that look like hamburgers and what not. I really don't get it but whatever.

Prices can get pretty steep on my big toys. I'm talking about the Gundams and Limited Edition action figures. But the whole store is moderately priced.

Watch for some sales though. Some signs are really clear so ask  one of the extremely helpful staff members the pricing.
