El Faro

I love El Faro: their old school "Mexican fast foods" sign complete with beaming lighthouse, their clientele that is equal parts neighborhood hipsters and neighborhood families, their burritos.  I of course stick to the vegetarian side of things, sometimes going for the very basic rice/beans/cheese and other times adding extras like guac and sour cream.  Ingredients are always generously portioned, and your food is made to order right there in front of you.  Authentic food at a great price.

Simple, unpretentious, inexpensive sushi served by some of the nicest people on Valencia.  My go-to is the vegetable tempura dinner, which comes with a heaping portion of 8 (and sometimes even 9 or 10) perfectly crisp veggies, 3 pieces of marinated eggplant sushi, a green salad with miso dressing, miso soup proper, and rice.  For about $10?  I leave quite happy and my wallet does too.

I dropped in here one sunny Saturday afternoon needing refreshment and was rewarded with the Tropical Dream smoothie, a gorgeous concoction of coconut milk, banana, pineapple, mango, and vanilla gelato.  Their sorbet and gelato case is truly a thing of beauty, and you are welcome to sample as many flavors as you like (I recommend the kiwi and/or blood orange if they have 'em).  And then take your treat to the tables or bench outside and watch the Mission stroll by.

Wonderful smoothies that are the perfect antidote to all of the holiday carousin' and grubbin' that has already kicked into high gear.  I love the Berry Bonds, chock full of a variety of real berries (natch), but other flavors feature everything from green tea to horchata to tropical coconut.  The sheer length of the menu means you will never get bored, and there are a ton of options for vegans too.  A pleasant and friendly place to stop in right next to the 24th Street BART.  Ignore the McDonald's and keep right on walking to Roxy's.

Kiji Japanese Restaurant and Sushi Bar

As a vegetarian I'm used to making do at sushi restaurants with the standard avocado and cucumber rolls, but Kiji provides the inventive veggie goodness and then some.  Vegetarian items are clearly marked on the menu, and there's a huge selection of 'em.  I tried the veggie dragon roll, with asparagus tempura and avocado inside and eggplant on top with the sweet "eel" sauce, and an ume roll that came with my beloved pickled plum along with sprouts, shiso, gobo, and cucumber.  Both were really really good, and my waitress was very helpful when I was having trouble deciding what I wanted.  I was also impressed with their daily specials and drink selection.  I'll be taking friends back here for sure.

I love Tuba for a quiet weeknight dinner.  Their musakka is out of this world, thinly-sliced eggplant, zucchini, potatoes, and squash with a not-too-heavy bechamel sauce on top.  Fresh salad and rice on the side (not to mention delicious flatbread to start) means I can usually only eat about half the dish on my own.  Friendly service and a warm, cozy atmosphere too!

They had Peanut Butter and Jelly on the day that I swung by, and I could have easily eaten a dozen of those they were so good.  But in the interest of fairness I tried the Vegan Banana and Classic Vanilla too...also delicious!

It's been a long while since I've written a review, but a tattoo is a big deal and I wanted to give full props to Cedre and Diving Swallow.  First of all the space is gorgeous, all light and air, and clean clean clean.  This was my first tattoo (my way of marking my 35th birthday) so I was a wee bit nervous, but Cedre instantly put me at my ease both during our initial consultation and then during the tattoo itself.  She duplicated a Margaret Kilgallen tree for me on my back and it looks absolutely killer, though her own art is quite gorgeous as well, especially her botanicals.  I'm already planning to go back to her for more ink...I might just make it my birthday present to myself every year!

Suzanne has created several portraits of me over the last few years, and each one of them is amazing.  I have a background in classics and mythology, as well as art history, and each time we discussed at length the influences and references that should be in the painting.  The results still give me chills.  Suzanne has a rich visual background that she pulls from, both in pop culture and high art, and it all comes together in her paintings in the most wonderful way.  Whether you're looking for straight representation, pure fantasy, or something in between, Suzanne's work will blow you away.

Simple, hearty, and delicious Salvadorean food.  I'm a huge fan of the pupusas, which literally ooze yumminess, but they also have excellent combination plates.  This morning I had the plantain breakfast combo, and my pile of golden fried sweet plantains came accompanied by sour cream, a wedge of queso fresco, casamiento (an addictive refried bean/rice mixture) and two piping-hot tortillas.  Add to this the fact that I could watch the Newcastle-Bolton match on any of the many TVs set up around the restaurant devoted to football, and I was officially in heaven.
