My fiance and I met and live in Ballard, so we thought it would be fitting to find an engagement ring designed by a local artist. We came across Amy's work at Venue where I pointed out a few designs I'd love to have and months later I became the proud owner of a beautiful, unique piece of art to wear on my hand for the REST OF MY LIFE!

One glitch...the ring was a bit too big. I called Amy who graciously offered to resize it for me free of charge, which basically involved making me a whole new ring. I met her at her studio and she was super sweet and easy to talk to.

I highly recommend Amy's work, especially if you are looking for something more special than cookie-cutter, big-box, dime-a-dozen jewelry.

I bought 2 salmon samplers from their website and shipped them to 2 different locations. The website said my 2nd order would be 20% off and throughout the entire checkout process this discount showed up up in my shopping cart --- until I input my credit card information. Because these were Christmas gifts, I purchased the salmon anyway and promptly sent an email to their customer service to let them know about the issue.

Fast forward THREE weeks and 4 emails and I finally get a response thanking me for alerting them to this issue by offering me 15% off on my NEXT order. Apparently the ad was intended only for orders shipping to the same address. This was mentioned nowhere on their website.

I'm told their salmon was delicious, but I won't be buying from them again.

One of the best options for cookies within a few blocks of my work. I'm in love with the oatmeal wheat germ cookies, but they are all good and usually warm when you order them. Sometimes they run out in the afternoon, which is a bummer when you're craving sugar at 3pm.

I haven't tried anything but their sweets here because the line at lunch is always too long for my impatient ass.

I don't work here anymore, just to be clear. I still have my accounts here though and will continue to do so.

The checking account I referenced in my original post is now down to 1.15% APY which sadly, is still a good rate. While the checking account might not be much of a big deal anymore, they do still have some great credit cards and they frequently have rate specials.

    6.01% APY on a checking account....enough said.

Since I work for Verity, I was able to test our new Velocity Checking account before the public launch. I just received my first dividend and I am blown away. It feels really good to see my money working for me. I earned $80 last month.

There are no catches with this account. What I mean is, there are no fees and the rate is not a teaser (although it is variable and may change depending on the market). We want to always pay one of the highest rates in Seattle. But, we do ask that you do a few things for us to earn this rate: make 12 debit POS transactions a month, log into home banking once/month and opt out of paper statements. If you can't do those things, you'll only earn .10%.

Anyway, check it out if you are interested in seeing your checking balance grow at all: http://www.veloci....

Fast and friendly. I love the Lucious Laura protein smoothie. It can't quite fill me up enough to be considered a meal, but it's a delicious pick-me-up and I'd pay the same price for a beer to give me gas and slow me down. This is a much better option.

I love that there is such a healthy option near my work, but I hope I have better service when I go back. The menu is super overwhelming and when I asked for a recommendation I was told I could order whatever I wanted. Not exactly what I was looking for. Also, not so much as a Thank You for coming today. When I'm shelling out $6 for juice, I want a little bit of personality to go along with it. I will be back for sure to give it a second chance.

Freeway Park

There really aren't that many places to sit and stretch out, have a nice bag lunch, read or just get some peace and quiet in downtown Seattle. Freeway Park is HUGE and there is plenty of space for everyone. So many nooks and crannies if you feel like you need some alone time on your lunch break. Lots of lawn to sprawl out on, plenty of gorgeous flowers, waterfalls, sculptures and yes, sometimes interesting characters.

Simply walking through this park doesn't really entitle you to give it a thorough review. You have to explore it, spend some time with it. It truly is a gem for those of us working downtown who need a dose of nature. It's certainly not all concrete as others have suggested. Yes, there are stairs since the park is built on a hill. They actually come in handy in getting you where you want to go!

Update - 5/22/2011
This update is for Happy Hour at the bar:

It was a sunny day in Seattle, so as you can imagine, most folks were trying to find a place to sit outside. We sat at the bar which was not crowded, yet the bartender basically ignored us once he got us our first drink order. A 2nd and 3rd bartender appeared and still, no one paid us much attention until we were ready for our check. Maybe the bar isn't the right spot to sit? We only stayed for an hour and then went somewhere else.

I'm sure I've walked by this place a million times, but never thought twice about it as it's tucked in the alley. A friend said it was highly recommended by her coworkers, so we gave it a shot. So glad we did!

We did not have reservations and were sat at the counter facing the kitchen. The cooks immediately gave us a free appetizer of smoked salmon to nibble on. It was delicious and thoughtful.

We were told we absolutely had to try the crab cake. At $16, it cost more than some of the entrees, so we split that and a hamburger. The crab cake lived up to the hype. It was fully loaded with huge chunks of savory crab. The burger was also very good and I'm not much of a burger person.

The service was perfect: friendly and informative, but not over-the-top. Due to my friend's connections, we managed to score a free piece of pecan pie which was heavenly. It had shaved chocolate on top and I swear there were subtle pieces of chocolate on the inside as well.

What I really like about Steelhead is that it seems an appropriate venue for any occasion: girls' night out, date, parents in town, etc. The atmosphere is cozy, yet vibrant. I love the energy...it just screams Seattle to me.

I only had lunch here, then came back for a second lemonade. Will definitely return!

I grew up during the fro-yo craze of the late '80s, early '90s, and I have fond memories of my mom treating me and my friends to yogurt at TCBY after swim and tennis lessons. So, frozen yogurt has an odd little place in my heart. But to be totally honest, most of it tastes like crap. My theory is because it's non/low-fat and non/low-fat dairy should simply not exist.

I thought maybe the mad scientists had figured out how to improve upon fro-yo in the past 20 years. My visit to Menchie's proved my assumption to be wrong. I sampled about 5 flavors and they were all pretty gross except for the plain vanilla and chocolate. The toppings made it more palatable. I chose roasted peanuts and strawberries. The price was totally reasonable.

Besides the unimpressive quality of the yogurt, I also have a beef with the buffet style, DIY topping bar. It was a wreck and did not look clean. There were also tens of children running amok, yelling.

Final verdict: I'll stick with gelato and remember fondly the fro-yo of my youth.

Put a bird on it!

This new shop could not have opened at a more perfect time in my life. You see, I quit my job 7 months ago and have been self-employed since, so my cash flow has been nearly non-existent. I have been in need of some serious retail therapy, but haven't been able to justify any non-essential expenses. Thank goodness I did not come across Jax Joon until 2 days after I accepted a job (with a steady paycheck) because I expect to spend a lot of money there.

My first (and only, so far) purchase was a Tea Forte mug to take to my new job. I am not exaggerating when I say that I've been looking for the perfect tea mug for months. FOUND IT!

Once I have a few paychecks in the ol' bank account I plan to go back and buy some of their awesome housewares: party plates, adorable salt & pepper shakers, etc. While the front of the store was like heaven, there was a section of stuff that looked more "Texas chic" -- frames made from old wood, rusty stars, etc. I like that look well enough, but I like it better in Texas (where I'm from).

There was also a selection of clothing, but I am not sure if it was just for men. I'll have to investigate further on my next trip!
