Life at the beach is sweet as ever.
Speaking of sweet, I finally had one of the famed Hinano burgers yesterday. And yeah, I agree with almost every reviewer and every person on Venice Beach that their burger is one of the best around.
And not a rip off, it's about the price of a draft.
Mine had Swiss cheese and raw onion. Dang that goes down good with beer.
Beer, burgers, blues = Bomb Digitty, baby.

Last night at Hinano I was reminded of why Venice Beach is my favorite place on this earth.
I lived on Venice Beach for a couple of years, and found Venice to be the only place I've ever hung out where I never felt judged. People go there to be free, the reason it's populated with so many artists, musicians, and other creative types.
After spending a few hours at Hinano, I was ready to pack up & move back to Venice Beach.
I arrived at 5pm (Saturday) to hear the JT Ross blues band, all five hours worth of them. I didn't want to miss anything. Junior Watson was on guitar and the band was smokin'. They brought the packed house down, and brought the crowd to its feet. There were a few Yelpers there (Barry & my old friend Leila T) and I did spread the good word about Yelp to some other people who (shockingly) had never heard of the site. They'll be hooked in no time....
Hinano represents the flavor of Venice perfectly: there were earlytwentysomething s in the crowd, and old peeps like me, and old hippies (again, like me, haha but I clean up good), and some town drunks, and the unmistakable Venice artsy types......you can tell by the creative way they're dressed & by the way they carry themselves in the I-don't-give-a-shit- what-you-think manner. Hahaha, I love it.
The one thing everyone had in common is that they were all havin' a great time.
I regret not bringing my pool stick cuz there are two nice tables. There was one gal who was cleaning up the table time after time, a joy to watch. She was on a level of expertise similar to our Nada, and that means she kicked some serious butt. I was cheering her on.
And there was a fight in the pool area, later in the evening, not a good thing. It was over quickly though. If bar fights make you squeamish, you might be a bit turned off by this dive bar.
There's beer & wine only at Hinano, and I drank Stella on tap for $5.50 a glass. The beer could have been colder. I might have even knocked off a star for that 'cause I like my beer frosty cold, except ....Hinano's ladies room is five stars all by itself.
The girls' potty was clean, had no water on the floor, no line (remarkably), and a cute set-up: it's two little rooms, one private space with the potty and one space with the sink and the mirror. When you open the door, if somebody's at the sink, the door smashes into them, that's how small it is. Dunno why this was so charming to me, but it was. See, this is why I fit right in with the crazy Venice crowd.....
I got real lucky to find a free street parking spot on Pacific, right around the corner from the bar, 'cause parking is almost always an issue in this area.
Yeah, I was dancing last night. And meeting people. Mostly I just enjoyed the laid-back but lively scene. Lookin' forward to my next visit, at which time I plan to try one of those burgers that looked so so good. They cook 'em on a grill right behind the bar, just like they did many moons ago at the Sink dive bar in Boulder, CO, when I was just a young flower child in art school.......but that's another story.
Some things change and some things, fortunately, stay the same....

West Hollywood Costume Carnival

Well, my feet were bleeding when I finally got back to my car.
I musta walked many miles, and steep hills were involved, lol.
The crowd was peaceful and friendly, not a hint of any conflict. The police had nothing to do but enforce roadblocks and enjoy the seemingly endless parade of costumed revelers. http://static.px.yelp....
http://static.px.yelp....
http://static.px.yelp....
Not surprisingly, people had come from all over the world to join the party. I met folks from Australia, UK, Germany, Japan & Thailand.
Some costume highlights were:
OctoMom http://static.px.yelp....
Pac Man http://static.px.yelp....
a Storm Trooper http://static.px.yelp....
Barbie doll http://static.px.yelp....
the marionette (my fave) http://static.px.yelp....
boobs http://static.px.yelp....
bank guy http://static.px.yelp....
Wheaties guy http://static.px.yelp....
Facebook, MySpace and Twitter (I jumped in between them and revealed my Yelp tank top) http://static.px.yelp....
Even LaToya Jackson was at the carnival, but the line was too long to meet her, or I would have. http://static.px.yelp....
By the time I realized my feet were fried, my legs ached so bad I had to sit on somebody's front porch stairs to rest, halfway up the looooong climb back to Sunset, where I'd parked my car.
The resident noticed me and inquired about my "costume" (which was last-minute and sucked). When I told him I was supposed to be a Yelpoholic, he said, "Oh I can perfectly understand how that could happen!"
Haha, I never wanted this magical evening to end. I will be back next year and every year thereafter. http://static.px.yelp....

As it turns out, I am the 4th reviewer to award five stars.
They've been open about 8 months, I was told, and the proprietor was on site to give me the guided tour of their vintage glassware selections.
There are two blenko glass vessels, huge ones, that knocked my socks off. The prices knocked my socks off, too.....haha......but extreme coolness does not come cheap.
I was also enamored with a vintage footstool in perfect condition. The $95 price tag on that seemed fair.
Lori did a great job describing the rest of the shop's inventory, so I won't repeat it. Suffice to say this shop is a fabulous spot to find a gift......for yourself as well as anyone else.
curious?

Subway
Categories: Sandwiches, Fast Food
Neighborhood: West Hollywood
There's a reason for that, I was reminded, after the sandwich I ate on Halloween.
Subway's directly across the street from Viper Room, where the Yelpoween event was held, and that's how i ended up at Subway, before the event. http://static.px.yelp....
I got ham & Swiss on whole wheat. Asked them to add lettuce, mayo, pickles. I didn't load up the sammy with extras cuz I didn't want to end up wearing it if it got too messy.
No danger of overloading, the sandwich was skimpy as far as fillings.
The bread was tasteless.
Maybe I ordered the wrong thing and it was my fault, dunno.
Service was amazing. I got compliments on my tight skinny jeans and my Yelp tank top. *sigh*
Maybe I should award 5 stars............
Nah. (But thanks, guys.)
My food cost $3.25. You get what ya pay for.......

Dawson and crew did a great job making everything festive for the occasion. I arrived early to avoid as much traffic as possible, so I was able to help carry a few of the carved pumpkins inside.......well done, the pumpkins rocked!!
I met great new people and saw many old friends. Joy was in the air for me last night, dang it I love Halloween! The moon was almost full, to add even more flavor to the evening.
I parked at a lot on Doheny, just off Sunset, for 20 bucks. It was only a couple blocks from Viper Room, worked out great. I had no problem getting out around midnight-1am and heading West on Sunset. It was still gridlock heading East, though, backed up well into Beverly Hills.
That zombie movie at Viper Room caught my attention at its beginning and I pretty much watched the whole thing. Why oh why did I ignore the fact that scary movies freak me out, after the fact......?!!
Damn. It took years for me to get over Sixth Sense.
So. When I finally did get home to my dark, empty house, I was afraid to go inside. Stop laughing!
I sat in the garage listening for zombie sounds, heard nothing. So I ventured in, and checked all the rooms and all the closets......still nothing.
I went to my office to check out the night's photos. Every minute I was turning around to see if a zombie was sneaking up behind me. True. I was scared shitless.
Finally, I got up and turned all the lights on, in every room, and tried to go to sleep on a couch. Right.
I heard sounds all over the place.
Made a stiff drink.
Finally passed out from exhaustion, admidst enough lights to illuminate a movie set.
Obviously, the zombies didn't get me. Yet.
Drinks at Viper Room were plenty strong for me. I had two vodka sodas and that was sufficient to last all the way through my trek down the hill to Santa Monica Blvd. madness.
I lost Edgar and Ricky in the crowd, almost as soon as we arrived, so I was on my own with camera.
I walked till the blisters on my feet had blisters, then hobbled back to my car....
The parking attendant reminded me that, when I'd arrived at his all-night lot, I told him I was not going home till the sun came up. I was gonna get my 20 bucks worth.
Well.....the best laid plans of mice and zombies.......
This was one of my best Halloweens ever, is my point.
Good friends, good cheer, good times.
I hope all this joy in my heart makes me zombie-proof........cuz I sure could use some sleep tonight..... : O

Hush Hush Hair Salon

Hush
Hush Up
& Hush Hush
Well shut my mouth!! haha
The 3 locations are all within a couple blocks of one another. How did I choose the one I went to today? It was the one that had an empty parking space in front, yesterday. Haha, I walked in and had a consultation, made an appointment for today.
(Please note that the address on this listing is incorrect, it may be the address for Hush. Correct address is 1020 Manhattan Ave., phone 310-372-2600)
I have been loyal to Studio DNA in SaMo for quite awhile, but it's becoming just too difficult to get from Redondo to SaMo for hair care......so I was in search of a great stylist closer to home.
And boy oh boy did I find one. He's Sid, newly relocated from SF. His credentials are impressive: he has taught the art of hairstyling and it sure does show.
I got one of the best, if not the very best, short cuts of my life at Hush Hush today. And color, too. Sid knows his stuff. Next time we'll do highlights, I can't wait!
The staff at Hush Hush will even feed your parking meter for you, if you end up havin' such a good time you forget to go home......shhhhhh, hush now.....
Seriously, this salon is light and bright with an ocean view. It's a stone's throw from Manhattan Beach Pier.
Oh, and they carry Shu Uemura hair products, which I love and highly recommend.
Life is good. And gettin' better every day.

Gum Tree

Neighborhood: Hermosa Beach
The scrambled egg, tomato, and aged cheddar on a croissant is the one I'm talkin' about. It was bursting with flavor, I assume from the cheese. Amazing, trust me.
It came with a side salad and cost I think $6.50 - $7. Fair price, worth every penny.
They use organic ingredients, a big plus in my book.
Sorry no photo of the sandwich cuz I scarfed it down so fast......

This is my kind of place. http://static.px....
It's family-owned, eco-friendly, and there are views up the wazoo, along with cool ocean breezes on a hot day. This morning it felt like a little slice of paradise to sit on Gum Tree's front porch sipping fresh iced tea (from a biodegradable cup), as Bob Dylan songs could be heard coming from the gift shop windows.....http://static.px....
A gum tree, I believe, is a eucalyptus. The Aussie owner of Gum Tree Cafe, Will, could probably verify the accuracy of what I was once told about eucalyptus trees in Australia: I heard that they are called the widow-makers because huge branches fall off with no rhyme nor reason, without warning. I know this is a fact, have seen many a car half squashed, parked under one of those trees around LA when a chunk gave way.
Gum Tree's proprietors are an interesting couple: he had a successful restaurant in NYC, where she was a fashion designer. I met Will today, but Lori was out on a design assignment. They have a young child, which might help to explain why Gum Tree is kid-friendly to the max.
The kid's menu is tres cool, offering grilled cheese or organic PB & J sandwiches with fruit ($4), healthy mac 'n cheese ($5), and a kids tasting plate with bite size turkey, ham, cheese & fruit ($6.50). Dammit I want a tasting plate! haha
And.....there's an entire kids room in the gift shop. http://static.px....
Gum Tree is located in what was once someone's residence, a 1911 Craftsman jewel. It sits at the top of Pier Ave., offering ocean views over the rooftops & perhaps the best ocean breeze in town. I could live there, it's beyond charming. http://static.px....
Half the indoor space is the cafe, and half is the shop. In the shop they sell cool stuff like beach hats & cover-ups, colorful door mats, unique small furniture, cards, wind chimes, kids stuff and more. http://static.px....
Behind the shop is an enclosed outdoor patio that, I was told, can be reserved for small gatherings like a baby shower (seats up to 20). http://static.px....
Gum Tree's menu boasts organic/locally-grow n ingredients in eco-friendly packaging. My utensils were biodegradable, as was my plastic cup.
The breakfast menu includes pastries (you should see the teeny tiny mini-muffins), organic Greek yogurt, fruits, hard-boiled free-range organic eggs ($1.50 each), and breakfast sandwiches in the $6-7 range. http://www.yelp.c...
I almost had the scrambled egg, tomato & aged cheddar on a croissant for $7.50. Next time.
Instead, today I spotted something wonderful on the daily special chalkboard: a grilled Gruyere & caramelized onion sandwich on sourdough. It amounted to French onion soup, in sandwich form. Good lordy it was good, sweet & delicious. http://static.px....
I had half a sandwich with a soup of the day, tomato basil, which included a side salad with homemade dressing to die for. $9.50 for the food, not including my drink, was a bit pricey perhaps, but worth every organic bite.....I mean dime.....
Other sandwich offerings include free-range turkey, South Indian chicken salad, Virginia ham, and veggie, in the $9 range.
There are salads that sound great....like roasted beet (what would we expect from a NY chef?)
There are hummus and cheese plates, and baked potato salad. And sweets that include Aussie delights.
Then there are the coffees, teas, and juices.
Honestly, I would have been to Gum Tree much sooner had I known how good it is. Wow, what a spot for a private party. And they cater, too.
The hours on the menu are different from the hours posted to the listing, and they are 7am to 4pm, closed Mondays.
Gum Tree Cafe has obviously won me over, on my very first visit, which was far from my last visit. See ya there.

South Bay Smog Check Center
Categories: Auto Repair, Smog Check Stations
Neighborhood: Torrance
Made sense to me, so I allowed Hilltop Auto to call and make an appointment for me that same day, yesterday. (And now I understand why Hilltop Auto's counter displays many hand-written thank-you notes in response to great service.)
Hard to find this smog place, though, so allow time to get confused. It's between Sam's Club and CostCo, just off Skypark, in the industrial park across from Lowe's. http://static.px.yelp....
Coming from the east, if you turn into CostCo parking lot, you went slightly too far. Like I did. And you can't get out of the damn parking lot without retracing your route.....there's a big ass wall between CostCo and Sam's, can you say "captive audience"....
So I had to fight my way back out the CostCo parking lot, reminded of why I have never set foot in a CostCo or a Sam's and hopefully never will....
Back onto Skypark I went, and tried to turn around for round two entry attempt. What happened to my formerly traffic-free short cut to Crenshaw? Skypark used to be a secret route but now there are cars everywhere, word's out. : (
Anyway. Five stars for the smog check guy. Very professional. The owner, Jim, did the test, and my 1:30 appointment happened right on time. No lines, no hassle = Momma Y smoggy seal of approval.
My baby passed her very first smog check with flying colors! *muah*
http://static.px.yelp....
She's almost 6! How time flies when you're havin' fun.
(I had taken her to Highridge hand carwash before the test, so she'd look like a new car, maybe that helped, haha....)
OK Miss Subaru, you're good to go, so now let's go run some canyons......
Today I discovered... *GASP*... a HomeGoods store that was not there the last time I was in the Home Depot plaza, not too far from where I live now.
I almost jumped for joy!
I had time to kill before my smog check appointment down the street, so I did a walk-through.
It was nostalgic, just like old times. Those huge area rugs I love so much, leather furniture up the wazoo, lamps galore, fine linens, fancy cookware.....
Paradise.
Holiday decorations were on display everywhere, and the Xmas stuff is out already. Crikey. Normally I would say wtf it ain't even Halloween yet.....BUT
I am so thrilled to have a HomeGoods near my 'hood that I'll overlook that crappola.
This newish HG is next to Home Depot, and across the parking lot from the In 'N Out, my review of which got a *cough* ROTD once upon a time......
Dude. My life is now complete.

I fooled around and fell in love
......I fell in love, I fell in love, yes I did...."
- Elvin Bischop
I fooled around and fell in love today.
I was on my way to T J Maxx on the PV Hill to return my new tan cowboy boots cuz I found those suckers in red at a different location. Red, baby, red leather cowboy boots.......
But that's another story.
I walk past Gilt Edge gallery every time I go to to my fave T J Maxx. And there's never been a time when at least one painting in their window didn't command my attention.
This gallery has beautiful original work, mainly oil paintings, and much of it is blazing with color. Just the way like it. My dad, the artist, loved bold color & taught me as a child to use and appreciate color.
So today, there was this painting, about 4 x 3 feet, inside the front door of Gilt Edge. It's a landscape, a bargain at around $2100 framed.
Oh the color. It could be an abstract scene of the Palos Verdes shoreline as seen from Del Cerro Park area. It could be many places.
I fell in love with the vibrant movement, the energy of that work. Almost no color was spared in the brilliant composition. It's a painting that says and does it all, if you know what I mean.......
It brought me to life, it spoke of life, so perfect and precious.
I had to step inside the store for a closer look. In order to do so, I had to cross over a horse shoe imbedded in the sidewalk. I assume that's for good luck, works for me.
The proprietor showed me around a little, and I saw lots of paintings of local scenes, first-rate stuff. Also figure paintings, flowers (as opposed to "florals"), and various other subject matter.
Gilt Edge contains a full-service frame shop as well as the gallery. And it gets even better: there are two museum restorers on staff. They work with oil paintings only, from the 15th-16th centuries forward. They are full museum restorers of such paintings, as well as the original frames.
I didn't buy the painting I love, yet, but I'll be dreamin' about it. That horse shoe brought me luck: I fooled around and fell in love......on this beautiful day, at the top of the world.
