If you ever feel like standing on death's precipice and beating your chest like gorilla, Laie Point is the place to do it. In case it sounds familiar, yes, this is the Forgetting Sarah Marshall location where Rachel jumps (and Peter falls) off that vine-y cliff!
Here's everything you need to know if you're planning on taking the 30-40 ft plunge!
1. It is very very recommended that you do this only if you see other people doing it too. It's definitely safer for someone with experience to guide you through the process. Also, the currents can be dangerous and you won't know how strong it is until it's too late. Typically, it's safest during the summer since that's when the ocean dies down but when I went early February, it wasn't too bad. Keep alert for changes in weather because it can cause the ocean to change very suddenly. If it starts getting windy, don't jump.
2. Where to jump: To the right of the point, closer to the houses. See that large rock? The one Rachel and Peter jumped off of in Forgetting Sarah Marshall? The actual jump spot is to the left of the rock. You'll see a small cement block with 'Laie Point' carved into it; this is where you place your feet. http://www.yelp.com/bi...
3. Jumping: Make sure to push off the ground and actually jump OUT. The water is deep enough but to be safe, you want to jump further out. http://www.yelp.com/bi...
4. Coming back out: If the waves are a little stronger, be careful during this part. Get close to the ledge and let the waves push you the rest of the way. Grab onto the wall and hold tight as the wave rushes back out. Once the wave recedes, pull yourself onto the ledge and walk to the right. You'll see a way back up. Again, this would be easiest if you had people guiding you, but bust out your rock climbing skills to get to the top. You gotta think creatively about some steps, but there should be well-worn grooves to help you along. http://www.yelp.com/bi...
Recommended: Wear water shoes so your feet don't get cut up while you're climbing out. Also, I saw some smashed up beer bottles on the ground, so be careful where you step. Sad that such a beautiful place is being trashed like that. And speaking of alcohol, do not be drunk while jumping. Duh.
This place is amazing besides the jump! Snap shots of the AMAZING scenery, watch locals fish, and see the huge-rock-with-a-hole-in-it on the other side of the point.
