Redstone American Grille

Category: American (New)

After hearing people rave about this place, I was really expecting much better. The atmosphere is nice and I guess the wait staff was friendly, but I felt like our waiter was a little overbearing at times.

We ordered cornbread to share, which I was looking forward to since I enjoy cornbread and I've heard Redstone's is amazing. However, I was so grossed out by the HAIR that I found in my cornbread that I couldn't bring myself to actually try it. The rest of the meal was pretty "eh". It wasn't horrible, but not worth the cost.

Did I mention there was hair in my cornbread? I probably would've given them 2 or 3 stars if I didn't find that so disgusting.

TLA Video

As nice as Netflix may be, they can't completely replace the experience of going into a video store and just browsing. What I like about TLA is that they have a huge selection from the mainstream to the obscure. The staff is generally nice, but I sometimes find myself having a hard time remembering the title to a movie and I hate getting the stink eye when I take the box to the counter.

Nodding Head Brewery & Restaurant

Oddly, I don't think I've tried their beer, despite the fact that this is a brewery. I give them props for making their own beer and perhaps I should go back sometime and try it. I'd advise not going there for the food, however: the last time I went, my food arrived cold, despite my ordering something that's usually served hot. It seemed sort of dirty and run down to me too. Basically, not a good lunch place but possibly better if you're looking for a brewery/bar type place.

Joseph Fox Bookshop

Category: Bookstores
Neighborhoods: Rittenhouse Square, Penn Center

4 star rating

I'm a firm believer in supporting local indepent stores when I can. Furthermore, like Jessika D, I'm one of those people who likes to read books that don't appear on on Oprah's book list. What I like about the Joseph Fox Bookshop:

The staff is friendly and knowledgeable
They have a wonderful selection
They're more then willing to hold and/or order books for you, if you know what you want.

I've never attended any of their author events, but they sound good and one of these days I hope to make it to one.

The downsides:
They're pretty small and sometimes feel cramped. The shelves are stocked high with books, but I often find myself having a hard time following how they're organized. It sort of bugs me that they don't have seating or something because if I'm going someplace to just browse, I tend to like to sit down and look through books to determine if I want to buy it or not.

This is not the sort of place I'd want to go to just browse, but if I know what I want, I like being able to go in and just pick something up.

Cin Cin

Category: Chinese
Neighborhood: Chestnut Hill

5 star rating

I live a couple blocks from CinCin and regularly get take out from here. The place tends to be packed for dinner on weekends, much less crowded during the week. Please note, however, that I don't actually eat in the restaurant that often and almost always get takeout. The waitstaff has been nothing but friendly every time I'm there and the manager always greets me by name. Whether I eat in or take out, the food has always been delicious and I think it's reasonably priced for what you get. Another positive thing about this place is that it's pretty much always open...I remember the manager telling me there's only one day a year when they're closed (I want to say Thanksgiving, but I don't remember for sure) and they're open later then some of the other restaurants in the area. CinCin is often my "I'm hungry, there's no food in the house, and there's nothing else open" place. That's a good thing, in my book. This is definitely my favorite Chinese restaurant in Chestnut Hill.
