We stopped here only for drinks and to take a gander at the menu.  People are right, this is a 'grown up' bar not packed with college kids.  However, to get that aesthetic, they've done a classic overcorrect if they were looking for my dollars.

I can sum it up thusly: we sat next to a guy wearing a turtleneck and sporting a ponytail.  He was having a conversation with the bartender about some whiskey drink made with a vanilla coffee bean reduction. I said good day sir.

I don't want to ding this place too hard -  service was good, drinks not overly pricey, and the atmosphere was refined.  Just too much so for me.

Stopped out of curiosity the other night and was pleasantly surprised. Ann Arbor has been missing a place that feels a lot like your drinking at your cozy, hip friend's apartment.

The drinks were a tad pricey - our vodka sodas were a dollar more than the trendy main street bar we went to afterwards.  But the service and atmosphere make it a place I'd go back to.

If the screening room turns out to be as cool and eclectic as the bar, this place could truly shine.  I look forward to coming back when that happens and giving them the elusive fifth star.

It's hard to stay away from Arch, as they gobble up all the student ghetto real estate. But here's the ways they will be sure to screw you over:

1. Keys - they have these special electronic keys.  I suppose it's under the guise of security, but in reality it's designed to charge you $35 goddamn dollars should you lose it, and make life difficult because they won't give you an extra key.  Not one.

2. Security Deposit - I've lived in at least half a dozen apartments in A2 over the last 15 years and I've never had a problem with getting my security deposit back.  Except with Arch, who dinged me $370 after living in a place for two years.  The carpet wasn't that nice to begin with a-holes

Those are guaranteed, as well as terrible and rude customer service should you ever need anything or have a basic question about the crappy way they conduct their business. For your next place in A2, take the time to avoid these people.  They suck.

I've never enjoyed this place.  From the unnecessary cover charges, to the overpriced and watered down drinks, to the unbelievably surly staff, I've always loathed it.  Now I have a reason to never return.

We don't have to get into why - it's beyond ridiculous - but recently I was cut off from the bar, and while standing outside the door, told I couldn't go back in.  The bartender brought me my tab to sign, which I did.  Then I look at my bank statement the next day AND THEY CHARGED ME 20% TIP. Now it wasn't a lot of money, but it's the point of the thing: Circus is a place that kicks you out for having a good time, and then charges you money for the privilege. Do not, under any circumstances, ever go there.

If the staff have their iPods plugged in, the music here is top notch.  Couldn't have done better myself.  I now consider this my home bar.  The staff and service are awesome, the beer is great, and most nights you better have something special going on to get me to go anywhere else.

Ann Arbor isn't short on bars with fine hand crafted beers, so assuming you can find something tasty on the menu at all of them?  What's to delineate?

All of the A2 brewpubs try to walk the line between hole in the wall and upscale, with The Griz Den probably ending the highest on the 'classy' front - not nearly as dark as ABC nor as open and carefree as Leopolds. The beer is quality, but usually doesn't measure up to the best of the other microbrews in town. The food is touch above what you may expect, but bottom line its bar food, so the bar is low.  Try the polenta fries though.  Totally worth it.

So what makes the Griz Den worthy of four stars? The Mug Club.  For a lifetime membership of $60 you get a t-shirt, mug, and discounts on beer and food.  And when I say discounts, I mean $1.50 giant beers during happy hour and huge discounts on carry out beer.  I made my money back in the first year easy.  Now if  they'd get the music off of whatever classic rock XM station they refuse to budge from, we may be in serious business.

Update - 8/3/2011
Boy have  I soured on Conors as of late.  The service has never been great, but we seemingly have a new waitress every Monday night.  We're often waiting an extra 20 minutes at the end of the night to cash out.  Or people can't get there drinks for 15 minutes.

I've heard rumors of health code issues, you can look those up yourself, but the place certainly isn't clean.  And god forbid you get stuck sitting on one of the benches along the wall.  They're in worse shape than my liver.  It's impossible to sit there for more than 20 minutes.  And those'll be the worst 20 minutes of your night.

The absolute unforgivable sin however, is the beer situation.  It's not just that they've run out of Oberon twice this summer. Or that they tried to serve me Blue Moon and call it Oberon.  It's that their Oberon tastes... off.  Like it's been kissed with the scent of formaldehyde. I don't know if they don't clean their lines or what, but if you are going to serve me an overpriced pint, make it taste like it's supposed to.

Of course I still give the place two stars.  Why? Because I love trivia on Monday nights. It's the best in town by far. But I'm not going back otherwise.  And if trivia ever moves, my one star review is prepped and ready.

Conors is an irish pub, so let's not be surprised that food is blah and  the service is meh. And seeing as its on Main Street in A2, the prices aren't designed to stretch your budget. The above can be viewed as somewhat unavoidable given with our starting thesis of 'Conors is an irish pub'.

However, being an irish pub Conors also has a great communal feel to it.  Start coming on Mondays for Trivia or one of the many karaoke or live music events throughout the week and this place starts to feel like your favorite pair of chucks - super comfortable (despite the drawback of them starting to smell). It fills up with drunks looking to hook up late at night later in the week, which can be good if that's your goal, or annoying if you're not in the mood to deal with the abject douchery that comes with such a thing.

My girlfriend suffers from a distinct case of wanderlust. So when we were driving around one Saturday and she declared "I want to do something different.  Take me out of town for an adventure." my first thought was "How about gay 1980's sitcom parody in fashionable Ferndale?"

I think I was surprised how immediately she took to the idea.  So we headed to the Ringwald for "Thank You for Being a Friend," the unofficial Golden Girls musical parody. I can't tell you what a home run this turned out to to be. We laughed until it hurt.

The theater is small, but that just ensures no bad seats.  I'll never know why Ann Arbor or other communities don't have more small companies like this, because we had such a good time, we can't wait to go back.

Sommerset Paving and Concrete

Category: Contractors

4.0 star rating

In this economy, I never imagined I'd have a problem getting an estimate from a contractor to come do some expensive work on our house, but no response was only slightly more popular than a curt one.

Sommerset was the exception.  They came out in person immediately, provided a detailed estimate, and checked in on us during the decision making process.  Once we chose them, they completed work quickly and quietly (as possible).

I wanted a fair bit of hand holding during the driveway paving process, as I didn't know a thing.  Sommerset provided that, along with quality workmanship.  I vow to come back in 5-10 years and give them the fifth star if the driveway holds up.

Bone Heads Bar-B-Que

We were driving North on US23 when my BDGF said "I am starving. Let us eat."  As luck would have it, that was just as I saw a sign that said "Bone Heads BBQ.  Five miles that way."  So we took a chance.

And we were immediately glad we did. The place is in the middle of nowhere, but quirky and friendly as the best of such places tend to be.  The food was well above most Michigan BBQ I've had - especially the beans.  Not since Texas have I had better beans.

They also have Michigan beer on tap, which to me goes a long way in saying, "We're here for you, Tyler B." So take a chance, it's worth the drive out to the sticks.

Grange Kitchen and Bar

Category: American (New)
Neighborhood: Downtown Ann Arbor

2.0 star rating
6/21/2011
I'm torn.  I really wanted to like Grange.  I like their concept of local, in season foodstuffs.  The people there were really nice. Everyone says that they have amazing cocktails (I don't drink anything more exotic than a vodka soda, but I still like them having such things). But the bottom line was that the experience was bland.

I didn't love the decor. It may seem trivial, and again, I liked the idea of what they were doing, but the giant pictures of food that are wrapped around their frames (or lack thereof) looked like they belonged in a food court or cafeteria.  Just bland.

But the blandest of the bland was the food.  I tasted both my meal and my BDGF's, and its like there was an aversion to spice of any kind. Literally no flavor.  I'm no gourmand, but it was like they removed the natural flavors of things as opposed to doing anything to enhance them in any way.

Maybe I got unlucky, and I hope so, because I want to like this place, but as long as my taste buds are intact, I shant be returning to Grange.
