Moan & Dove

Category: Bars

5.0 star rating

Love Moan and Dove. First off, it delivers what it promises times ten and no more. You came for the beer (or cider) and they have it---from the local to the exotic. The single room environment that is cozy and neighborhoody for even those of us who travel through town. There is no promise of food--but they have no problem with people bringing in whatever they want to eat or even having a pizza delivered. I spied a dog quietly sleeping under a table. No biggie. The services is attentive, friendly but not in your face to either be your friend or sell you something. We had a perfect evening sampling beers and watching the world go by. We will return.

The Piggery

My new favorite in Ithaca:

We had first tried the Piggery when they sold at our teensy Trumansburg Farmers Market. We loved the pork especially the pate they sold by the jar. A treat...particularly a local treat.  We were saddened by their success in leaving our small market, but when they opened the Piggery with dine in food and a local deli/ meat counter, we could not resist.

We cannot get any further than the pulled pork. Amazing. You know its sublime when a teenager (after consuming the sandwich and a taco or two) expounds on the deliciousness of the meat, the perfection of the fresh roll (I mean, who even notices the bun) and the sublimely simple slaw of cabbage. And, he thanked us profusely for taking him out to lunch at the Piggery right after the lunch and again the day after. The sunny environment, happy service, delicious service and the list a mile long of local producers aligned with The Piggery to make the experience delicious with the feel good that its all from our back yard. And, you get the added pleasure of watching people come in and buy up all the meat and poultry to take home for another yummy dining experience.

The team from the Piggery LOVE what they are doing from raising the pigs and loving them up, to delivering an amazing range of food with imagination, humor and good sense. I hope they continue to be successful, smart and so engaged in the local foodshed.

This link takes you to what makes  the owners, Heather and Brad, get up in the morning. Bless them both:  http://www.thepiggery....

Another reason to love Ithaca to bits.

We went to the counter and asked to see the menu. The dude said, "we dont't have a menu" and then rattled off the short list of burgers, fries and dogs available. Heaven. As close to the east coast version of In and Out Burger with east coast attitude thrown in for free as you can get. Hot, inexpensive, and delicious. The crowd packing the store attests to their doing it the right way. Thank to Yelpers for pointing us here!

Colonial Motel & Spa

We saw the Colonial during our last trip through the area and thought we would try it the next time through. Thanks to the yelpifiers, the leap was at least informed.

The lobby and Tavern was great, hospitable and promising. There were cozy fires, cuddly banquets, and a nice selection of beer and wine to stretch out the evening with my beau.  However, the rehabbed rooms are a bit spare with odd old fashioned (read work in progress) bathrooms, parsimonious extras ( skimpy soap and shampoo) and wierd coffee offering.

We all left the Colonial hoping that the will "get it" as the have the potential to go the way of the chic boutique hotel, but are missing the umphs to go there.

Corning Dental Associates Rllp DDS

I have been going to Corning Dental Associates for years and years. We moved away from the area and returning to Corning years later.  I tried other dentists in the area for my kids and myself with each experience being never up to the service, the quality of people and their skills and the professionalism of the staff and office never meeting Corning Dental Associates. We have had all sorts of treatments in the  decades we have gone to this fabulous dentist group...and all have been relatively pain free and proactive. They also are plugged into a great group of oral surgeons, so our double wisdom teeth extractions (2 kids back to back) was easy, affordable and the patients were up in running in no time with no issues or infections.

We now live an hour north of Corning and still make th trek to Corning Dental to continue our relationship and receive the best dental care in the area.

Little Venice Ristorante

Category: Pizza

4.0 star rating

Little Venice is a family style restaurant (we like to sit in a booth in the bar and watch "the game" on the plethora of flat screen tvs over the bar. We love the "all day happy hour" on some drinks ( 2 for one light beer, and some cocktails), their wings, and the low key approach. We have gone a few times and now feel like regulars as the waitresses remember what we like, and have drinks and menus as soon as we slide into our seats. Its a jeans and tee shirt place--so if you are out doing the wine trail or hiking in the park, Little Venice is a great choice for lunch or dinner.

Little Venice is a solid choice for either a pizza, calzone, pasta or a big dinner. We have just started going there and quite honestly, we have not had a disappointment in food, service or ambience.  The fish fry is delicate, light and coated with panko--hot and generous. My son always orders chicken riggies (a local specialty of hot rigatoni, chicken, cheese and a rich sauce). Their chicken full dinner specialties are great. We love the zucchini side and forego the saladbar as there is just too much food (although my son wolfs down plates of the hot garlic knots for his "salad"). The greek chicken wrap is delicious, hot with plenty of marinated chicken and feta. Pizza--we order to go and though its not New York pizza, its pretty good--and you can get wings to go too (NY Pizza  has just pizza).
Something for everyone. Tasty. Affordable and quick. Worth the trip.

Its a nice stop close to many attractions, and for us, a few blocks from our house so we can walk.

Felicia's Atomic Lounge

Felicia's Atomic Lounge is our living room in downtown Ithaca. We love it.

First off, the localvore cocktails rock--Leah and Amelia create the most original drinks and then, in the spirit of whats fresh and then spin it into an amazing, distinct drink. Then, the continual roster of great music along with an audience that digs it is tremendous...such that after the show, you can mingle with the band and make some new best friends. Fridays are fun as Stefan from Wide Awake Bakery is busy selling his bread along with Sharon and Dean from Tree Gate Farm, selling produce and flowers in addition to the music and drinks to get your weekend off to a great start.

If its hot out, sit in the alley, and admire the night sky while you savor your drink and drunken dog or elegant pizza.

it is amazing to watch the bartenders create these magical concoctions--even on a quiet night, you can have a nice night with your dear friend Felicia. A must if you are visiting and a perch if you live here in Ithaca or ithaca environs.

Moravian Book Shop

Categories: Specialty Food, Bookstores

Its a mega store-- like the Old Forge Hardware store or my 5 star favorite, Gillinghams in Woodstock VT. However, it is all about twinkle and sparkle, Vera Bradley and Christmas crap. The book section looked good  and given the state of the mega bookstore, it was nice to see a truly edited collection of book that I would want to read. But the overwhelming theme to this BOOK  store was all about trinkets and gifts....in abundance. If you are visiting Bethlehem, it is the perfect tourist spot to buy a "little something" to take home...but all in all, it does not feel like a cohesive collection that matches my expectation for something that expresses the concept of the Moravian Book Shop, the oldest book shop in the US.

Wow. After searching Yelp to see where to eat in Westminster MD,and reading the hands down love for the Legends Cafe, I was fully prepared to be charmed as every recommendation from Yelp has promised and delivered on. Legends totally did not live up to the recommendations.

Service was slow. The food was totally ordinary (even the crab soup which the Yelpers raved about)--and not exceptional. Given my expectation, I was extremely disappointed in this restaurant from the decor including suspended records, and poster shop movie star posters, to the food and service-- We will not return. Horrible.

Bethlehem Brew Works

We wanted a casual dinner while visiting  Bethlehem on a college visit with our son. We wanted tasty, local and a taste of the night fun that our son could have if he attended school in the area. Bethlehem Brew Works delivered a fun, active bar with great food, good and really friendly service and a glimpse of  stuff folks do after school. The hummus was sublime served as a collection of two different hummus (one chick peas, the other black beans) along with chopped red peppers and a black olive tapanade. Delish! We had their tasty, fruity, Defenestration (IPA) and sat at the bar for dinner which the bartenders made very comfy for all of us. Prices were good, the crowd friendly--and we would def. go back.
