This place is tucked away in the historic old Sears building now known as South Side on Lamar. It's worth the trip to south Dallas as the coffee is excellent and the people are real nice. I love the atmosphere, the free WiFi and the yummy pastries.

It's been awhile since I've been here, but I remember three things that will get me going back for more:

1) great coffee, 2) good service, 3) excellent decor and atmosphere.

Latte, please!

 Update - 10/28/2009
UPDATE: I've been here twice now, and while the service is painfully slow (must. have. fix. now.) they are the nicest people in town and the coffee is superb. Will return again and again.

I haven't actually been here yet, but my baby daddy brought me one of their lattes once and let me say - best damn latte I've ever had. The coffee itself gets 5 stars, but I'll save a rave review for when I visit the cafe in person. Yum!

Aaron Brothers Art & Framing

This is a great place for just about any kind of frame you need, plus a few art supplies. Frames here range from high-quality to cheap Made In China stuff, so buyer beware. Make sure what you're getting is good enough for your precious photos. I've had to return some frames that were pretty cheap-o. The customer service is good,  and that's always a big plus for me. Aaron Brothers used to be an indie business, but now is owned by mega-craft retailer, Michaels.

CityCraft

CityCraft is a new fabric shop in Dallas - the first of its kind in Big D! It sells designer fabric that you won't find in traditional "quilty" shops or Jo-Ann's superstores. Shop for Joel Dewberry, Anna Marie Horner, and Amy Butler fabrics, patterns and notions. If you don't know what I'm talking about, go and find out. Your eyes will be pleased with the explosion of color and patterns at CityCraft.

You can also take sewing classes of all kinds, including embroidery. If you already know how to sew, CityCraft offers a fun "sewing lounge" service where you and some friends can come hang out and sew, drink cocktails and socialize over a tea cozy or apron pattern. Fun!

I'm so glad Dallas has a place like this...finally!

This place is fantastic! Every time I go I like what I get. Well, okay I get the same thing every time: Pad See Ew with tofu.

No "ew" here - it's delicious. The owner is very sweet and chatty, and I like that they expanded to a bar next door. The art in the place is sort of hodge-podgy and the music is either sleep-inducing (Sade) or hyperactive (dance). So while they could work on the atmosphere, the food is terrific, and that's good enough to keep me coming back for more.

Cafe Du Monde

The hordes of people at this must-see New Orleans stop are overwhelming and the mounds of powdered sugar all over the place is a little gross. There are always gobs of hyper children running around the place and now I know why Kid Leashes were invented (tho I don't technically "approve" of them, I "understand" them).

If you can handle tons of tourists, dirty tables and obnoxious kids, then stop by Cafe du Monde for the best damned beignets ever.

NB: I bought a box of Cafe du Monde beignet mix and made them at home. They didn't totally suck!

Half-Price Books Records Magazines

I'm not a big fan of  "used" unless we're talking kids' clothes or vintage. But if you're into used books and such, this is the place.

For me personally, I never ever (ever!) find what I'm looking for when I come here. I'm like Pollyanna - ever hopeful yet always disappointed. I've looked for travel books to Scotland, craft books on sewing (and not old lady granny quilts), books on parenting, calendars that aren't puppies or race cars. I never find what I want and always end up going to Narnes & Boble across the highway.

But people swear by Half Price (including my baby daddy, Jason W.), so they're doing something right. I guess.

Love love love this place! It's the best bead shop I've ever been to (after BeadWorks in Cambridge, Mass, that is). The selection is incredible and the staff is very friendly. I love all the shops on Magazine St., and The Bead Shop is always my first stop on this street when I visit New Orleans'. As a jewelry designer, I love coming home with beads from this store and making something extra special to remind me of my trip.

Tomfort Lodge

Oh my god, this place is so ghetto. When Jason and I visited NOLA for the first time, we drove up and down streets that fanned out of downtown in search of an affordable motel.

Driving down Tulane we immediately fell in love with the name of this place and pulled in to book a room. (The T on the sign so obviously replaced a C + a bunch of random words = The Tomfort Inn Lodge Motel - you think I'm joking?)

This place is really weird and dirty and funky. We changed rooms three times on that trip and brought bedbugs home - bloodsuckers that would plague us for three summers after that.

Ah, good times.
