Ahhhhhhhhhhh....wond erful. Delicious. Superb. Truly, I cannot sing the praises of Rioja enough. This establishment just makes me happy when I walk in the door! Now, when I walk out of the door is a different story...I'm practically in a food coma and dreaming about trading in my true religion denim for a pair of beige, elastic waistband pants!
Three of us dined at Rioja on Friday night - the restaurant was busy - we walked in and put our names in for a table. One of the hostesses pointed out two options in the restaurant that would likely be our seating. One was in the front of the restaurant near the outside patio and the other was at the sofas near the bar. I wasn't terribly keen on either...but it was Rioja and I knew the service and amazing food would make up for it.
Now I must take a moment to brag about the staff at Rioja. The bartender, Patrick, was so wonderful. He remembered the drinks we ordered when we were in about two days ago. It made the wait for our table much more enjoyable. Kudos to Patrick for a job well done and being a fun-friendly guy even though you were swamped on a Friday night!
Then, much to my surprise one of the hostesses remembered us from a couple days before when we came in for a drink (again, wonderful staff!). Next thing I know, is that about fifteen minutes later we had a beautiful table toward the back of the restaurant - it was perfect!
Tanya then greeted us at our table and began to inform us about the menu. She was friendly and knowledgeable and I knew that the evening would not be a let down. Service is extremely important to me when I patron a restaurant - and like i continue to rattle on - the service at Rioja is exceptional.
The menu...my oh my!!! Jenn (owner and chef of Rioja) has culminated a spread of ingredients that speak to your palate when you peruse her menu. I literally SALIVATE when I read about the selections. I get all giddy inside when I think about what flavors to expect!!
So, we decided to go all out for dinner that evening. You only live once, right!?!? We opted for the lamb chorizo pizza and black mission fig newtons (homemade, of course!! That's how Jenn rolls!) with proscuitto and gorgonzola. Beverages of the alcoholic kind were ordered and we were well on our way to enjoy ourselves.
Our appetizers arrived and we dove right in! The pizza had a little kick to it - but the goat cheese helped to cool it down a bit and mesh the flavors together beautifully. Not to mention the fig newton!!! Oh - the presentation was so pretty. I am always amazed at how the ingredients can seem so bizarre on the menu, but you can always be assured that it will come together and taste wonderful.
We each ordered a salad - warm squash, Jenn's chopped salad and the beet salad. The beet salad was one of the most STUNNING presentations I've EVER seen. It was like a piece of artwork...just gorgeous!! All the salads were deeee-lish!
We decided to have a third course, or pasta course before our entrees and ordered the candied lemon gnocchi. I have had this before and it was just as wonderful as the first time. The presentation was slightly different as it included edible flowers - which are super fun!
Fourth course (I know, you've got to be kidding me, right!?). We ordered sea scallops, fettucine and the filet.
(insert music from heaven here...)
My filet was cooked PERFECTLY. Surprise, I know. :) The flavors were wonderful. The scallops were OUTSTANDING with a spicy green curry and coconut risotto. The fettucine was also SPLENDID! It had a little kick to it, the meatballs were out of this world. There are so many tempting choices on the menu - you won't be disappointed with anything you pick!
Oh, I feel like I have neglected to brag about Tanya our "limo driver" as I like to call it. It's the difference between a cab ride and a limo ride. Smooth ride with attentive service while not coming across as overbearing. The other people that assisted her throughout the evening were perfect as well. Drinks were never low, tables were cleaned quickly, silverware was restocked - you never had to ask for a thing. I love that. Tanya also helped us with selecting a nice glass of vino to enjoy with our entrees.
Rioja is like that brother or sister that is sooooo damn perfect all the time that they cause you to make that gesture where you stick your finger in your mouth and act like your gagging - because you're so envious. I can just picture the other restaurants in the area making that gesture when they hear people "oooooo-and-awe" over Rioja. They know what they are doing!
To wrap up the night we ordered upside down pineapple bread pudding and pumpkin cheesecake! The homemade ice creams with dessert were to die for.
Rioja, thank you for being my favorite restaurant. Can't sing your praises enough - no really, I'd write more, but I only get 5,000 characters!

Hair Salons
Neighborhoods: Northwest, Lodo
I have a serious issue with my hair. I'm REALLY weird about who I let cut my hair - yadda yadda yadda. But when you're sportin' a faux-hawk, I think you have to be picky! So, I did the usual http://local.goog... search, hopped onto http://yelp.com as a "cross-reference" (computer nerd!!) and felt like I should call Luxe. So, I did.
I think I got Larin on the phone (sorry Larin if I misspelled your name!) and she was able to book me with Dawn. After reading about Dawn on the site, I was pretty stoked to get in with her immediately - as a result of a cancellation. Her bio sounded like she was progressive and outside the box - and I like-a-dat!
I show up for my 1pm appointment (this was a Wednesday). I was greeted by a gal at the front desk - they complimented me on my hair - which was very sweet and then Dawn's assistant arrived and had me cover up my clothing with a shiny, silvery jacket. Fun! She asked me for my coat and then whisked me off to Dawn's station. She then offered me something to drink.
Dawn immediately came over and started talking about my hair - she thought the faux-hawk was fun and was excited about cutting it. I also liked the fact that she said something along the lines of I can definitely cut this. WHEW! Music to my freaking ears!
For your first visit they offer a complimentary application when they shampoo and condition. The only thing that I missed was the scalp massage. Larin told me on the phone that they do that - so I was bummed when it didn't happen - that's the whole reason I look forward to going to the salon -- relaxation, pampering and someone rubbin' my scalp. Word! That's the only reason I didn't 5 star this one.
So, the cut is FAAAAABBBBBBUUUUUUUL LLLOUS! I abso-freaking-lutely LOVE it. I was flying home to Tulsa, OK to get my haircut - so finding a local stylista rocked my world!
I would highly recommend Dawn to anyone looking for someone who knows what they are doing and is particular about their hair. APPLAUSE, APPLAUSE to Dawn at Luxe!

Auto Repair
Neighborhoods: Southwest, Capitol Hill
Well, well, well. Where do I begin?
First, let me say...maybe I was spoiled at the last place I took my car for service in Oklahoma, but something tells me this is just a genuine let down service shop. Or maybe it was the Toyota dealership I recently visited with my boyfriend for service. That was nice.
Secondly, why in the world am I first to review this place?? I know I can't be the only one that has had a less than lustrous experience (or maybe I'm not!?).
Okay - so the nitty-gritty of the 2 stars revolves around the following criteria:
1. Service guy when I arrived: oh wait - there wasn't one! Now, every place I have gone to before someone meets you at your car. Instead, I look like a dumbfounded idiot standing in the middle of the service bay, aimlessly hoping someone will tell me where the hell I should go - because apparently I wasn't in the right area...
2. Crappy waiting area
Old freaking soda machine that excreted (yes, I said excreted) dollops of goo in a cup and sprayed soda water after. Oh and donuts. Honestly - the donuts were pretty good - I had two after about a two hour wait. But, the service guy told me "and you'll just go down the hall and around the corner to our waiting area. It's very nice." Maybe my expectations were set waaaay too high. But this was not very nice to me. An old boob tube that you needed to sit right next to in order to see the screen. Excreting soda machines - thank God I didn't pay for that - and donuts. They had coffee too - but I'm not the type to drink coffee without milky goodness. I was able to get on the web with my mac, but damn it all, the battery went dead. Ugh.
3. Lady that yelled at the guy that walked in and had been stealing donuts and soda for about a year.
Some guy walks in the lobby of the dealership and the receptionist immediately walks over to him and yells, "OH NO! Oh no sir! You are not going to do this anymore!! No more!" At that point I was fully expecting the vertically challenged man to expose himself to us or something wild like that. But, it turns out the guy has been coming into the dealership through various "points of entry" to steal donuts, soda (I don't know why!), make phone calls and use the bathroom! So, after about a year and an employee meeting (which I heard about) this guy was not going to get away with it. "Go somewhere else and freeload!" the receptionist yelled at him. Wow...maybe I should have given them 4 stars for the entertainment factor. It was a riot!
4. Updates - or lack thereof!
I was told that my oil change - which is what I came there for - would take about one hour or one hour and fifteen minutes. After about one hour and forty-five minutes I left the fancy-pants waiting area and walked back to service. The cashier was helpful and got my service guy who proceeded to check on my car. I mean, shouldn't that have happened about thirty minutes ago? So, I waited for a bit...and...see item #5.
5. Explanation of repair
Apparently the simple oil change that I made my appointment for wasn't enough. There was damage to some front pan on the under side of my car that had some impact damage. It was attached by someone who did it incorrectly, so now it needed to be fixed because they had my car in pieces in the shop and they said they couldn't let it leave the shop that way. Well, is that my problem??? What if I didn't have the $560 to repair it?? Would they have not let me take my car? Would they make me go back there and "try" to put it back together myself?!? It was unreal to me that they wouldn't let me take my car without fixing it. I also needed new brake pads in the back. Whatever...that's fine. But will you give me my car back if I don't want that done? Which leads me to item #6.
6. Rental car??
Because these people are sooooo generous they offered to split the cost for a rental car since they were going to need several hours to fix the front pan issue. Wow...don't go all out now...split the cost?! I mean, what choice did I have? Sit in a shitty waiting room all day or rent a car for a day - because they wouldn't give me my car back if I didn't get it repaired.
7. Pick-up
I did get a call around 4pm that day stating that my car was ready. I was happy to hear this - much to my dismay they weren't calling me to tell me that the service technicians decided to take my S40 Volvo out for a joyride and totaled it. Damn. I bought "gap insurance."
So, all in all, I wasn't pleased with my experience. I hope other people go there and are blown away - because this left a bad taste in my mouth (or maybe that was the dollop of goo in the dixie cup). And Rickenbaugh...I don't know if you're hard-up for cash or something, but when you hold someone's car hostage and tell them they can't have it unless they get it repaired, at least cover the cost of the rental car. Geez Louise!

Don't Tell Anyone Else But...I think Las Delicias is las gross.
Most Recent Discoverydoing something you're passionate about rocks!
Current CrushI don't think I should go there...
I've long told my friends since I moved to Denver, that I would love to find a great, authentic, Mexican/Tex-Mex restaurant in the city. However, after many failed attempts at this endeavor - so failed in fact, that I couldn't even yelp about them - I reached my final destination. At last! Efrain's - I've been waiting for you...for far too long and here we are. Together at last. Isn't it just great?!!?
I actually dined at Efrain's twice in one week. After my first visit, I left with visions of what I would try next on their menu. I was that person that went around talking to everyone they knew about the restaurant that they tried and raved, raved, raved. Slightly obnoxious, maybe? Passionate? Certainly.
So, the first time I had the chicken supreme. Yum. Not too spicy - even with their infamous salsa verde. And let me tell ya somethin' - it was indeed supreme. Yeah, baby. To be honest, Efrain's had me at hello - or rather at the guacamole. You know, it wasn't anything fancy - but sure tasted great and looked nothing like the kryptonite green fake guac I once (ONCE) endured at Las Delicias. Let me talk about this salsa verde for a moment though...my dining partner loves it so much that during the ol' college days, they would purchase gallons of it and have it shipped to Oregon or travel with it on the plane. I mean, that's some serious dedication, no?
Alright, moving right along. Visit two. Great White Lightning margaritas in a carafe - there were three of us and well worth the spend. The margs there rock - and i consider myself to be a bit of a margarita aficionado. I was feeling pretty crazy that night, so I went all out with the chicken chimichanga. Deep fried goodness. Heck yeah! The "changa" arrived and once again - thrilled. We also ordered a veggie taco - which by the way - are delicious and massive. I mixed my rice in with the beans and I was well on my way to a happy stomach. Oh and the margs - did I mention that they're great? Because they are.
The service there has also been consistent - friendly, accurate and just what you would expect at a place like Efrain's. I can't wait to go back! And you know what? I think I will - tonight! This time I'm going to hit up the original location (they have 3 - Lafayette, Boulder and Longmont) in Lafayette. I hope it's just as good as my other two visits in Boulder-town!! (nervous...)
