Dae Jang Geum Tofu House

Category: Korean

4.0 star rating
1/27/2012 1 Check-in Here
A new Korean restaurant popped up on the radar and with the name Dae Jang Geum, I just had to try it.   I spent sleepless nights and 54 hours watching the Dae Jang Geum Korean Drama, (granted there's no relation to the hit tv series).

Our order, which came with approximately 8 banchans and the healthy mixed rice:
-Sam Gae Tang: stuffed cornish hen w. sweet rice & ginseng $16.99
-BuhSut Siib Dooboo: mushroom tofu stew $9.99

Reasonable prices. Extensive menu.  Hefty portions. The food is moderately priced and beats the Kukje market restaurant by both price and taste.  Impossible to find parking. Our waitress served us another tables order and I saw another server drop banchan dishes.  The service still needs some experience , but that will come in due time.  Extremely polite and apologetic.  We'll be back.

Everyone has to dive in and try this carnival themed food restaurant at least once.  The restaurant fills up fast so get there early. Every dish we ordered was fried and we had heartburn and clogged arteries for a week ,but it was oh so sinfully delectable and worth every moment.  It's like  being able to order everything that your parents said "no" to as a kid.  Affordable prices so be sure to try a variety of dishes while you're here.

Consistently spot on for their lunch menu .  All of their lunch sandwiches are $10 across the board.  I usually rotate between the

-Chicken Sandwich: crispy chicken, roaster sweet potato, ginger garlic mayo on pinkie's kaiser roll
-Burger & house cut fries: grilled snake river farm kobe beef, pinkie's challah bun, over roasted tomato, roasted garlic aioli. Add cheese

The eggplant is also not to be missed.

Yelp's Holiday Hangover 2.0 @ Big Daddy's

For the past three years I've only heard about the awesome Yelp Holiday parties.  Well after three long years of waiting, I finally made it in to one.  Melissa D & I both brought new Yelpers to their first ever Yelp event.  Monday Night's event.. ..."Hyphy in the Hamptons" white party.

Big Daddy's BIG Antiques was the perfect venue, not requiring any decoration while still having ample room to mingle and sit.  Blended into the decor was the trapeze artist overhead.

The highlights of the evening:
-Snap Fiesta's photobooth of random unposed photos
-Pop Chips Couch
-Chai Tea Cupcake
-Indian Street Food: Samosa & Kati Rolls

Shabu House is my default restaurant to go to for Shabu when I'm on the peninsula.  Sizeable portions, easy parking & prompt service.  Includes an assortment of  vegetables, udon, rice and ice cream.  A great location for large groups.  We celebrated several parties with reservation of 20+ at a time. Multiple tv screens are mounted to the walls to catch either an early or late sporting game on tv.

I first heard about BorrowLenses from my coworker whose rented several Canon lenses.  He used the rental service to try out a few lenses before upgrading to full frame.

For me, I wanted to test out the Nikon 17-55 lense at a friends wedding.  Killed two birds with one stone.  The online ordering went exactly as expected.  When I went to pick up the lense at the SF location, I was in and out in less than 20 seconds.

I've had Super Duper on my radar for the past few months and finally made it here on my lunch break today.  I love the fact that it's super fast service.  100% Niman Ranch all natural beefParking can be tough in the area, but I lucked out today.  Next time I'll just hop on muni.

There's the 8oz super burger & the 4 oz mini burger which is similiar to a single or double burger.  I almost got the super burger, but sure am glad that I did the mini.  It was nice to be able to finish an entire burger without leaving left overs.

Mini Burger $4.50
Cheese $0.50
Organice Egg $1.00
Lettuce, Super Sauce & Spicy Pickles

Update - 12/31/2011 2 photos 2 Check-ins Here
I've had two night and day experiences at this location.  I came here earlier in the year and the service and food was amazing when we ordered Omakase.  We brought my parents back to celebrate my dads 64th birthday specifically to try the  "Tomahawk" cut. I have no complaints about the food.  It was still cooked to perfection however my main complaint was the extensive waiting. 1.5 HOURS FOR OUR MAIN ENREES & SIDES to be served!

Reservations: 7:30pm
(arrived at 7:20pm, seated 7:31pm, entree orders taken at 7:45-7:50ish pm)

Main Entrees & Sides All Served: 9:15pm
(finished dinner around: 9:35 and waited an additional 20 minutes for our plates to be cleared.  Mind you we finally had to flag down our waiter to have our plates taken away)

1) When we were first seated we were only given the drink menus.  Our waiter came by shortly after to take our drink order. He later returned to let us know that two of the three drink orders were not in stock.   One of the drinks contained melon which we were told was out of season.  If something is out of season, do not put it on the menu. The second drink had an ingredient that they had run out of.  He later took our second drink order and left.  The dinner menus weren't brought out till about 10 minutes after we were seated.

2) The bread basket was never refilled ,  though multiple tables around us had their baskets replenished

3)When we ordered the Tomahawk steaks we were informed by our waiter that it would take 35 minutes to prepare.  If he had warned us that it would actually take an hour and half, then I would have called ahead to pre-order the dishes.  My father was soo full off eating the entire bread basket that he was full by the time his steak was served at 9:15pm.  He ended up boxing up 90% of the tomahawk steak and ate it along with his 3 untouched sides for dinner the next evening.

4) After we finished eating, we were waiting for the waiter to clear our table and bring out dessert menus.  After 20 minutes & seeing that all 6 of us were killing time on our smart phones, I finally had to flag another waiter to locate our waiter and have him clear out the table.  Our entire table thought he went on break or went home for evening since he clearly wasn't on the dining room floor.

Too bad I couldn't make the reservation through OpenTable for a party of 6, or I would have left a duplicate review there too.  $700+ meal for the birthday boy to get full off of bread, water & a bowl of soup.  After this dining experience I will not be returning to this location. Since we are based in San Francisco, I  will be heading over to their SF location in the future.
