This place has one of the best decorative and tasting cakes in the San Gabriel Valley.  The bread and pastries here are not as good.  When I want to buy a cake for a party, I come to this place because of its cake decoration and gift box.  They also offer cakes in a variety of flavor, including lychee, green tea, coconut, ginger....  They recently moved to a smaller place in the same plaza in San Marino.  They also offer coffee and drinks.

I first learned about this place at a relative's engagement party 15 years ago when I was a kid.  Since then, each year, I asked for a birthday cake from Cathy's Bakery.  The best cake they have is Taro pudding cake (pudding on top of a sponge cake with taro jam inside.  Their Napoleon cake is also excellent.  I know people from out of state buy cakes here to take back home before departing for airport.  The boss "Cathy" is always very friendly and does not seem to age with time.  I also like their sandwiches for breakfast.

This is definitely one of my favorite bakeries in LA.  It is a a Taiwanese style bakery.  Virtually everything here is good.  The patries and cakes are fresh and delicious.  I like the Hokkaido Cake, which tastes like a sponge cake.  The bread has a lot of variety, such as pineapple bread, cheese toast, sushi bread and custard bread.  It also serves Chinese breakfast in the morning.   Too bad it has only standing room for the breakfast.  I like the soy milk, the shao bin, the yo tiao, and sticky rice bun.  They even have Taiwanese style hana sushi, which totally reminds me of my childhood school trip in Taiwan.  This place tends to be very crowded in the morning and is not a easy place to find parking space in the plaza.

This review is for the hotel portion.  I visited a friend who stayed at the hotel for a few days while visiting LA.  The interior of the room was run down.  The furniture were cheap looking.  It looks more like a motel than a hotel.  Everything was so old without update.  We heard that the owner is a Chinese immigrant, also living in the hotel with his wife.  Many residents here looked like they used the hotel like an apartment.  The food at the Munchkin Restaurant was however decent.

This is a Hong Kong style cafe, serving western and Chinese food.  I came here for lunch and dinner a few times.  The food was lousy.  Too much sauce and salt in every dish. They serve food in bulk.  The only reason it attracts customers is its cheap price.  The service was also very bad.  I feel that I was one of the pigs being fed at a farm.

This is one of the very few places in LA, where you could have Taiwanese style porridge meal.  Whenever I feel sick or feel like having a light Chinese meal, I come here.  It carries almost always the same items all year round in a buffet style, except that you tell the waitress to tray the items you want.  It is inexpensive.  Food is great and not filling.  I like the following dishes:

* minced pork meat with cucumber;
* scrambled eggs (need to ask them to make it at the kitchen);
* Chinese sausage;
* Cabbage;
* Tofu with Preserved Eggs;
* Fried pork meat

Hurry Curry of Tokyo

After seeing the 5-stars hype, I decided to give this place a try since I'm a curry lover.  I was very disappointed.   I had chicken cutlet curry while my BF had Tokyo curry (ground beef).  My other friend had chicken spaghetti.  The curry flavor was way too strong to a point you feel it is artificial.  You can't taste the meat inside the curry.  I feel I could get the same curry at any ordinary Chinese or Japanese restaurants.  Nothing was unique about it.  Also, the rice was not fully cooked.  There is no comparison to Curry House.  However, the spaghetti did taste better than Curry House.

If you are looking for flavorful noodle, you might be disappointed.  I give this place a four stars rating for cooking chicken and noodle without artificial additive, such as msg.  I had Ancient Ginger Chicken Soup Noodle, which was plain and decent.  The chicken meat was almost without skin.  The soup was clear without much oil in it.  I also like the appetizer cucumber with bean paste.  I appreciate their healthy way of cooking.

This is an amazing place.  Forget that you should act like a lady when eating.  The dungeoness crab and the shrimp taste so good in the restaurant's special sha-bang or garlic butter sauce.  They don't give u forks and knife here (unless you request it).  Your fingers and face are bound to get dirty.  So, don't go if you had your nails done earlier, and don't go with nice or expensive clothes.  I don't think this is real Cajun food.  It probably should be called Vietnamese style Cajun.  Oh, if you have some leftover sauce, make sure you take it home.  It tastes so yummmmy with rice and noodle at home.  The only reason I'm not giving five stars is that it is so flavorful and garlic so strong that sometimes your taste bud might be numbed during the meal.

If you desire Taiwanese food (non-deli dinner or banquet style), you should try this place.  This is a very popular restaurants for Taiwanese immigrants.  It is very crowded and hard to find parking during dinner time.  Make sure you go early or order to go.  Ask the waiter for suggestion of some unique Taiwanese dishes, sesame oil chicken, pan fried fish, oyster beef with spice, Buddha pot, etc.  Small dish like mini-anchovies with fried peanuts is also very good.  Even the chow mein is good.  The only reason I'm not giving a five-stars rating is that it tends to be oily.
