Target

Category: Department Stores

5 star rating
 11/13/2009
It's back! Finally, Target has resurrected in Sunnyvale. After suffering at the Cupertino and San Jose (Coleman) locations, it was time to revisit our favorite Target. My wife and I made a visit on Thursday night (couple days before its official November 15 Grand Opening), and it did not disappoint. On a side note, I really loved how the lighted trees added to the excitement as we drove in the parking garage. The parking garage is huge and it doesn't feel like your enclosed in. You take an escalator/stairs/elevator to the second floor where everything is at. My first impression was jaw-dropping. This place is HUGE! This Target is the MGM Grand of all Target stores. The plastic Target carts looked very cool. I really loved the cleanliness (we'll see how long this lasts), and the aisles are much bigger and easier to maneuver around. I'm still surprised by the fact they sell groceries over there. I never seen ground beef or fruits and vegetables at a Target before.

All in all, a great first impression with a couple minor complaints. The checkout lanes were slow and it seemed the cashiers were still learning how to ring out items. I'm pretty sure that will be corrected eventually. What are you waiting for? Go now!!!

Toppings Frozen Yogurt

After a great experience at the Boiling Crab, it was time to help counter the heartburn at Toppings. We were approached by an employee and offered us small cups for samples. There were a lot of organic choices to choose from. They had strawberry, mango, raspberry to name a few. I ended up with a mix of strawberry and mango tart. For toppings, I went with a fresh fruit set up consisting of pineapples, coconut cubes, mangoes, and strawberries.

It cost me around $4 which isn't bad. We all gathered around one of the few tables there. I really enjoyed the mango tart and coconut cubes. I'll definitely be back after pigging out at Boiling Crab.

The Boiling Crab

This place is insane. No wonder why the wait times are up to an hour...even more. I went here for lunch on a Saturday with my family and friends (6 people), and the wait was roughly an hour. We were given bibs as a prelude of what to come. This was the first time for all of us, so it was pretty intimidating on what to order. We ended up ordering 3 lbs. of shrimp, 2 lbs. of craw fish, 4 blue crabs, and order of fried oysters, 6 ears of corn, and 2 orders of steamed rice - all with the mild whole sha-bang seasoning.

There were no plates and no utensils to work with. You eat primarily with your hands (I do it anyway since I'm Filipino). The shrimp was my favorite. I could taste the Cajun seasoning with lemon butter and bits of garlic chunks. The fried oysters were really good especially with the spicy cocktail sauce. The craw fish was consumed with slurp-like tactics. I didn't care too much for the blue crab, and I don't think I'll order that in the future. I love the fact that anything goes here. I had a scoop of rice on the paper and just ate with my hands...I wasn't even embarrassed.

The meal came out to $120 (they charge gratuity for parties 6 and more) which ended up being $20/person. Not bad at all. I will definitely be back; I'll just have to order more rice and probably a pound of king crab legs. I highly recommend this place. The long wait is definitely worth it!

El Pollo Loco

Category: Restaurants

3 star rating

I love El Pollo Loco, but this staff needs to take customer service classes. I have been here on numerous occasions, and I have never received great service. Their staff seems to be pissed off all the time and take it out on the customers. I don't order any complicated, but they get annoyed with every request you ask for, whether it's plates, utensils, or large cups for salsa. Also, like many yelpers here, be sure to check your order because they tend to miss items.

The quality of food and cleanliness at the salsa bar is great, but they need to change their depressed and pissed off attitude. I might have to drive to the Coleman location from now on.

Korea House

Category: Korean

4 star rating

This review is primarily based on lunch.

When I'm feeling like Korean food, I would usually head over to Korean BBQ Palace, but it can get a little pricey. My best friend recommended a cheaper alternative, so we ate there for lunch. My first impression of this place was hilarious. I laughed at their lunch buffet set up, but soon after, I took it back. You help yourself to a bento box and pick whatever you want to eat. The sushi was ok, but no complaints. The pickled lettuce salad was very good as was the noodles. The fried chicken was the best. Fortunately, I was able to experience it when it came fresh to the buffet table. The quality of the chicken and love put into cooking this made it a smash hit at my table. The beef short ribs was delicious with "fall of the bone" goodness. You can eat all this for just $9! You can't find this deal anywhere else.

I only wished they had fried rice in addition to the steamed rice they are offering now. Don't get me wrong, I love steamed rice, but I eat it all the time at home, and fried rice, in my opinion, is a better accompaniment to these wonderful dishes. My best friend said they changed ownership...and for that, they are off to a great start.

I will definitely be back!

Freedom Debt Relief

Category: Financial Services

5 star rating
 10/27/2009
The weakened economy has put consumers in a deeper hole to the point where basic living necessities are barely affordable. It also does not help that credit card companies are charging outrageously high interest rates, where paying the minimum does not even cut down the principle balance. My uncle, like many, was in this situation and wanted to file for bankruptcy. I did research for alternatives to bankruptcy and came across debt settlement. Freedom Debt Relief seemed to be the front runner, so I had my uncle give them a call.

My uncle called and said the sales rep was very helpful and provided an overview of how the program worked. He said Freedom Debt Relief negotiates directly with the creditors to obtain optimal settlements. My uncle faxed over his credit card statements to see if he qualified for the program; he was approved and signed up for the program. Five months into the program, and Freedom Debt Relief has already settled 1 of  his 6 accounts. He is expected to be in the program and be debt free within 30 months.

If you are having trouble paying off your unsecured debts, I highly recommend calling Freedom Debt Relief. There are many options out there, but they seem to be legit. In addition to their professional debt consultants, customer service is exceptional and has a quick response rate.

La Fuente Fish & Chips

Category: Seafood

3 star rating
 9/21/2009
My best friend and I decided to check this place out after driving by this place numerous times. My initial reaction to this place was positive. The owners are really friendly amongst this small establishment that only has 4 tables. There's so much variety in the menu - meat sauce spaghetti and fish curry to name a few (very ironic in a fish and chips restaurant). I ordered the 1 Fish and 3 Oysters w/ chips combo and a can of Pepsi. I could only shake my head at the oysters as they looked like jalepeno poppers. The oysters looked as if they came from a jar. It wasn't as I expected as I am accustomed to the fantasy oysters from Bay's Fish and Chips in Sunnyvale. The fish was just ok when a nice crunch. I didn't care too much for the fries.

This place had potential, but it truly disappointed me. I don't think I'll be back.

SoundWorks DJ Company

Category: DJs

5 star rating
 8/21/2009
After attending a couple wedding shows, my wife and I decided to go with SoundWorks. The prices are very reasonable compared to the other competitors. Alvin was our DJ and has made our wedding a memorable one. His professionalism should not go unnoticed. About a week or two before the wedding, we met in person to go over our song list and reception schedule. I value that in a DJ because they potentially are the emcee for the reception. Given that Alvin has worked hundreds of weddings, he recommended a couple suggestions for our reception schedule. We took his advice and have not regretted it at all.

Alvin was on par with our wedding schedule and everything went smoothly. His charisma and upbeat personality and choice of music created a lively atmosphere that catered to everyone's ear. The dance floor was constantly packed and we even received a noise complaint from the hotel. That's when you know your wedding guests are having a good time and everyone was rockin' to the beat.

I have nothing but positive feedback for Alvin and SoundWorks. If it's a wedding, school function, or any type of party or event, I highly recommend SoundWorks. Trust me, you will not be disappointed.

Thanks again, Alvin, for making our wedding very memorable!

Cherry Garden Filipino Fast Food

Category: Filipino

3 star rating
 8/20/2009
My wife was craving some kare kare last night and she honestly called every Filipino restaurant to see if it was on the menu. Cherry Garden happened to have it on their dinner menu, so we decided to take a trip over there. The restaurant was located in a small plaza off of Scott and Homestead. We arrived around 5:30, half hour before they closed, so there were a few options to choose from. I ordered the chicken adobo and pork bbq stick with two scoops of rice. I was kind of disappointed with the adobo as the sauce was too thin. I prefer my adobo with a thicker sauce. However, the chicken was tender and fell off the bone. The pork bbq stick was very tasty though some pieces were chewy. I tried my wife's beef steak and it was delicious. I'm definitely going to order that if I ever come back again.

I want to give this place a 4-star rating, but the lack of variety of entrees(maybe it was near closing time) and lack of flavor contributed to my 3-star rating. Based on these reviews, it seems the breakfast items were the favorites. I may have to drop by one morning and order the spamsilog, or try out the place during lunch time. Hopefully, I'll have a better experience.

456 Chinese Restaurant

Category: Chinese

4 star rating

For years, I've always passed by this place when I was heading over to Valley Fair making fun of the restaurant name and thinking who would ever eat there. Guess what? I eat here now (at least twice a month). Aside from China Stix, 456 is another favorite of mine in Santa Clara. The lunch menu is available 7 days a week from 11:00am - 3:00pm and the prices are reasonable. The combination plates include soup, spring roll, BBQ pork fried rice, and vegetable chow mein.

The sweet and sour pork is my favorite as the batter is crispy and not soggy like other places. The mongolian beef is not as spicy (which I like) and they aren't stingy with the beef. I have also tried the eggplant with tofu, walnut prawns (a little pricey at $12.50), beef chow fun, and combination fried rice. All these were delicious and not disappointing whatsoever. I also recommend the fried bananas for dessert.

I would highly recommend eating here. If you want take out, be sure to log onto their website for a coupon. This entitles you to a free order of egg rolls, chicken wings, and combination fried rice or chow mein with a purchase of $30 (chicken wings or egg rolls if spending $20). The location may not look great, but the food and service is worth the trip!
