Monkey Burger

Category: Burgers

3.0 star rating

We'd been dying to try Monkey Burger for a while and finally made it there on a Friday night. Like others have mentioned, the set-up is confusing - when we walked in, we weren't sure if we were supposed to seat ourselves, or order then sit. I, too, am not a fan of paying upfront (plus tip!) before I have eaten a bite of food, particularly when you have to wait on your food for a bit.

The space itself is very clean, very fun, and I particularly liked the chairs. I ordered the Blue and the SO ordered the Cheddar; we both requested medium rare and the burgers were maybe a bit overcooked, but not enough where it ruined the experience. Burgers were HUGE and tasty. Not the best burger I've had (that honor belongs to Diablo Burger in Flagstaff), but definitely a good eat. The star was the sweet potato fries. I'd swing by just for those. SO delicious.

Honestly, the only thing that would give me pause in swinging through again is the price. I'm not sure it's worth what you pay. Still, I'm glad I gave it a shot. If they found a way to bring down the prices, that place would be hopping. It should have been a LOT busier on a Friday night.

How do you screw up a taco? I stopped in here for a quick eat, paid $10 for two shrimp tacos and a drink, and I couldn't even finish the first taco; they were beyond bland and the shrimp smelled/tasted off. Even the salsa was flavorless.

Solar Culture

In many ways, Solar Culture represents better than any place in town the eclectic, DIY, arty spirit that infuses Tucson's culture. Owner Stephen Eye is on of the sweetest, most serene men you'll ever meet, and the entire joint is infused with that laidback, genuine spirit. I've seen some amazing shows here and it's so easy to mingle with the bands and just have a fabulous night. That said, yes - it's not the *ideal* music venue. It's hot as balls in the summer, the room is long and narrow, and there's the train passing by (which, honestly, I happen to love and think adds to the charm), but I love watching a band while surrounded by a variety of art, and I love supporting a local treasure.

Plush

My favorite venue for music in Tucson. Atmosphere, lighting, and sound - while Congress and Rialto shows are a constant game of roulette, I can't remember ever having a bad experience with sound at Plush. But then I've never had a problem with slow bartenders either. Another bonus: Plush makes their drinks strong, which I appreciate, and the staff is decidedly less surly than a few other places in town. And then there's the trashy glam decor, which I love with every fiber of my being. There's something about the vibe in this place that keeps douchebaggery to a minimum, too; you'll find the most respectful crowds here.

I can't believe how overrated this place is. The wait is ridiculous for subpar food. And what Mexican restaurant charges extra for beans and rice??

My favorite restaurant in Tucson, hands down. Every week I look forward to my Friday ritual of pho and pork paste spring rolls. The staff is outstanding, warm and friendly; I love calling in my order and being greeted by name because they recognize my phone number. But the star is the pho broth - it's simply the best I've ever had. Fragrant and flavorful and just plain awesome.

Fiorito's - CLOSED

First impression of Fiorito's was not positive. The SO and I ate in the restaurant and found the atmosphere cheesy and outdated, and we were most unimpressed with the pasta we'd ordered. The entire experience was disappointing. But while I was there, I listened to what other customers ordered - ALL of them asked for pizza.

A month later, I convinced the husband to order a pie. Oh, my god. I'm so glad we gave the place another shot. Every single one of those stars is for their pizza. Easily the best I've had in town. Their white pie is out of this world; the price is worth it for the crust alone, which is so light and buttery. We haven't ordered from Magpie's since.
