The Melting Pot

Category: Fondue

5 star rating
 11/19/2009 11 photos
I like to give my 5 stars few-and-far between. You see, I can be a 4 star fan of anything, but very few businesses are 'As good as it gets!' in my book. I'm giving The Melting Pot in Larkspur 5 very big stars based upon my overall experience here. I loved it.

Upon arriving at The Melting Pot, you feel like you're back in late 1800's getting ready to go to work at the brick kiln. A huge brick building with an enormous smokestack- dark windows and a tunnel driveway. When you enter, you feel like you've just stumbled into Batman's secret lair. Long dark corridors on either side, dimly lit lights and a folk rock music playing. The ambiance is very unique- 5 stars.

After being seated, you'll quickly your teacher- scratch that, I mean waiter. Your waiter will help you, guide you, hold your hand through any cheese, salad, chocolate or wine questions you may have. When I ate at the Melting Pot my waiters name was Max, and he did an unbelievably exceptional job with any and all questions we had. He was talking about 'pairing' and 'mixing'- what tastes good with what- the freshness of certain things. He was like a Melting Pot encyclopedia- and to top it off showed amazing customer service skills. Bravo, 5 stars.

The 4 course 'Big Night Out' meal is outstanding. It's fondue, so you already know it's gonna be fun, but it also has to be done right. Well, they do it right at Melting Pot. They start you with a cheese (which can be substituted for another cheese). It comes out with chips, bread, apples and veggies. We went with the Spinach Artichoke cheese which mixes Fontina and Butterkase together- so delicious! 5 Stars! Your second course is you salad. I ordered the California Salad(which I highly recommend) Raspberry Walnut vinaigrette over tiny cut Roma Tomatoes and Gorgonzola cheese. So awesome! 5 Stars!

After the first two courses comes your main course- and this is where it gets crazy. It includes items such as Lobster Tail, Filet Mignon, NY Strip, Bratwurst, Shrimp, and Chicken... Not to mention all the veggies you want. They boil a broth right in front of you and you cook these items at your table. For flavor, they bring out an insane assortment of dips- different mustards and terriyakis, 'spicys' and 'smooths'... Total fun.

Lastly, the chocolate. As they say in Brooklyn, "Forget about it!" By this time you'll be stuffed from the rest of the food and be ready to go to bed! But no, you NEED to eat this chocolate fondue. We went with the Caramel Chocolate which was so delicious. Mixed with marshmallows, pound cakes, strawberries and more- it just doesn't get any better.

Now to be totally honest, I'm a little split in the Price Vs. Quality Vs. Quantity. The 'Big Night Out' meals will run you about $100 per couple- plus when you include drinks and a nice tip, it adds up. On paper the Big Night Out looks like a lot of food, but the main course is a little small in my opinion, and the other courses are really just cheese and chocolate. However, i'm looking past that. I could give it 4 stars, but this place really is better than that. This meal takes close to two hours to finish, also. The Melting Pot staff does extra special things for the customers, too- such as bringing out cards and special plates for anniversaries or birthdays, but on a much classier scale then your local Applebees.

They have alot of great deals- too. Check their website for upcoming promotions and discount days & times. Also, they usually have coupons on http://watchhalfoff.com and http://bayareahalfoff.com

For the overall experience of The Melting Pot, I give it 5 stars. The unique location, the awesome wait staff and customer service, and for the fun meal overall.

With 1500+ Reviews and 4.5 stars- If you can't tell that Bakesale Betty is a hit then you're using Yelp wrong.

I gave in. I made the trip. I had to see what all the fuss was about. You really are coming here for two things, the Fried Chicken Sandwich and the Cookies. BOTH are AWESOME. When I arrived Betty looked over to me and said "Glad you could finally make it! You're the last person in the East Bay to try this place! What took you so long?"

Let me say this again, a little louder. The FRIED CHICKEN SANDWICH and COOKIES are AWESOME. GO GET EM'. TODAY.

I hope this heartfelt, detailed, and sincere review helped you decide if Bakesale Betty is right for you.

Mediterranean Inn

Neighborhood: Queen Anne

3 star rating

I'm stuck in the middle. Mediterranean didn't suck, but it wasn't amazing. Just little things here and there... Usually I write long story telling reviews, but for Mediterranean I'll just list the pros and cons and let you decide.

Pros:
Affordable, Clean.
Walking distance to Space Needle, EMP, Key Arena, Monorail to Pikes.
AMAZING VIEW from the roof.
Free Internet in lobby area.
Starbucks attached to it.

Cons:
You have to pay for parking and internet in your room.
The beds were super small.
The website shows rooms with great views, I had a view OF other rooms.
No early check in. 4pm is the earliest they'll let you.
The front desk seemed annoyed anytime I spoke with them.

The biggest con I have, however, is when I called ahead of time to find out what the cheapest way from the Airport to their Hotel is. They told me the cheapest way was to get a Taxi, or for a slightly discounted rate to call a towncar company that they have a deal with. This would have cost me 30-40 Something dollars. On my own, I was able to find a MUCH CHEAPER method.

TIP! If you're coming from the Airport, take the Sound Transit LIGHT RAIL!(http://www.soundtransi...) It only cost $2.50 per person to get from the airport to Westlake. From Westlake, jump on the Seattle Center MONORAIL- Also $2 per person(http://www.seattlemono...) This will bring you directly to the Space Needle, and a mere TWO BLOCKS from the hotel. The whole trip takes about 45 minutes. I PROMISE you the Light Rail seemed incredibly clean and safe for tourists, and the monorail is filled with tourists anyway. It's ALOT CHEAPER than a taxi or towncar.

Maybe I'm just upset that the hotel tried to make me use their expensive towncar instead of telling me(or knowing about) the light rail/monorail. This hotel definitely does the trick and is acceptable. It certainly isn't a bad hotel and I had no huge glaring problems, but for some reason I don't think I'll be staying here again. Just wasn't my kinda place, I guess.

Laugh Out Loud! Ok Seattle- you got me!

I don't know if this is a local tradition- If this is some restaurant close to your childhood hearts- If the high ratings are purely a value over quality thing- Or if this is simply a sick, sick joke on Yelp... But I can't name one good thing about Dick's. What are the 4-5 stars all about?

Initially I was really stoked to see this place right next to my Seattle hotel. 3.5 Stars on Yelp made me think it could be worth trying- which I did, regrettably. To be honest, I feel like I paid for grease and oil with fries and burgers on the side. Scratch that- make that soggy fries, bread and dry patties on the side. Oh yeah, and I also paid for ketchup, literally.

What in the world? lol- Seattle, you're so crazy! Nice one.

Racha Noodle & Thai Cuisine

My honest review for this place is 4 stars, although i feel like I should give them 5 to help boost their rating! Seattle locals should know what a fine Thai restaurant they've got hidden right under their nose!

After footing it through downtown Seattle all day long- I decide to make my way back to the hotel. I've had MANY snacks and bites to eat throughout, but haven't had time to sit down for a real meal. I take the monorail back to my hotel and hit up my Yelp for Blackberry application to see if there are any good eats in the area! Thai food with a 3.5 rating, 100+ reviews? Hmmm- I'm a bit hesitant- but who cares! I'm starving!

This place was DELICIOUS! Much much better than some of the previous reviews has led on! The portions here are very big and are a fair price. The 'Tower' appetizer could be an entree itself! 3 plates stacked high with all sorts of yummy treats!(see pics) The Pad Thai was just as good as some of my favorite Thai spots back home, and the Chicken Curry was nice and spicy. I washed it down with a Thai beer- Singha, very light and very smooth. At the end of the meal they even bring you out a complimentary desert which is really tasty, little crepes with some kinda mushed leaf paste(sounds yummy, i know- but it is!)

If you're looking for good Thai food in the Seattle area, I promise you you'll love this place! Located a few blocks from the Space Needle, right across the street from Easy Street Records. 4+ stars!

Fenton's, where have you been all my life?

Living in the East Bay my entire life I've heard about this magical place they call Fenton's. Ice cream upon whipped cream upon ice cream upon almonds- upon more ice cream! All I had ever heard was how mesmerizing the ice cream at Fenton's was.

And so, being the total lame that I am- never went to Fenton's! That was until last week when, of course, the Disney/Pixar movie UP! came out on DVD. And so, again, being the total lame that I am- totally geeked out and went on a FENTON'S MISSION the day after watching said DVD.

If you've had an Ice Cream Sundae before, that's great. Good for you. Congratulations. But guess what? Your Ice Cream Sundae doesn't compare to anything you'll find at Fenton's! Fenton's Sundaes put all other Ice Cream creations to shame! I nearly exploded out from my seat when the waitress served me my Mocha Almond Fudge/Raspberry Swirl w/ Whipped Cream, Nuts, Strawberries and Cherry!  It was a sight to behold! A thing of beauty, I tell ya!

Definitely a great place for kids- definitely some amazing ice cream. I'm a fan for sure and will be back soon.

Burger Bar

I'm really confused as to why there are so many 1 and 2 star reviews for Burger Bar? If it's because of the price- I don't think that's fair! Burger Bar is a gourmet burger joint with higher-then-average burger prices- And i think this place rocks!

Yes- the average burger here will run you between $16-$22, although they do have $9-$11 options. Since this was my first time trying Burger Bar(and i wanted to give Yelpers my best assessment), I decided to go all out and get "Hubert's Favorite Choice" as advertised in their menu; the Hubert Keller Burger. Hubert Keller is the head chef and creator of Burger Bar, so if this is his favorite burger it had to be good!

Folks, this burger was much better then good! It was outstanding! I understand for $22 I could have purchased a hell of alot more double cheeseburgers from McDonalds- But I could sincerely taste a difference and believe this burger is WELL WORTH IT! The juiciness of the burger was just awesome! The caramelized onions were just falling out of the ciabatta buns! The blue cheese was so pungent, yet so delicious. The Hubert Keller burger was so flavorful- it was down right amazing.

My Girlfriend purchased a Buffalo Burger- which tasted great as well! I had a few bites, each seemingly more tender than the last. You can really taste the difference between the Angus beef and the Buffalo beef.

On top of this- they serve really unique milkshakes such as Nutella and Twinkie flavors. Plus, they have a really huge selection of beer and wine. My jaw dropped when i saw their beer list! I ended up picking some random pilsener from Germany I'd never heard of- that's always fun lol.

I really do plan on coming back to Burger Bar soon. I might not drop $20 on a burger again since i'm sure the quality of their lower priced burger is just as great! Who knows, i might get crazy and throw some black truffles or some foie gras- or heck, even lobster on my burger. I'm definitely a fan of this place and recommend it!

Every now and then you run into shops like this. I love em'!

Old newspapers, vintage magazines, propaganda and ad clippings- That's what you'll find here. Out of respect for the "No Pictures" sign inside the store I have nothing to show you Yelpers, but I can tell you this place is pretty cool. I spent so much time browsing the magazine racks inside Paperworks that I almost forgot about all the delicious seafood calling my name outside- just a few storefronts away.

Very cool shop and worthy of this quick 4 star review- check it out if you're in the area!

Cheese so good it would make a cow beg! That's what you'll find at Beecher's Handmade Cheese in Seattle.

They advertise the 'World's Best' Mac and Cheese- and I don't think they're lying. The mac and cheese here had, without question, the best consistency and cheese flavor I've probably ever had. Not too thick, not at all watery. Not overpowering cheese, but just the right mix of their Flagship and Jack! And the grilled cheese sandwich was awesome, too! Just a grilled sandwich with a few slices of their signature cheese- no cheddar, no American, no butter... Their grilled cheese is simple and delicious.

I've been yelling at myself because I didn't bring any home with me from Seattle- If you're visiting, you'll know you've found Beecher's when you see two HUGE vats of cheese being made in the windows! Beecher's is a MUST TRY if visting Pikes Place.

Michou Fresca

Neighborhood: Downtown

3 star rating

Michou Fresca is A-OK, a worthy eatery which i enjoyed.

Michou seems to specialize in two things- baked potatoes and sandwiches. I had one of their sandwiches- a Tuscan Chicken I believe(see pics). While the grilling made the bread nice and tasty, the overall sandwich was a little bland for me. The tomatoes were juicy, but overall not much flavor- However, it was only $5.50 which seems like a good price for this sandwich! I also had the Zepploes, which were just ok- but a steal at 4 for $1.50. The mozzarella sticks were very tasty- and 3 for $1 is another steal!

Overall maybe not the greatest food I ate in Seattle, but definitely some great deals on quick snacks near Pikes Place! I'd would go again for the mozzarella sticks lol!
