Rather than just providing you with a collection of surf memorabilia, you can see living, breathing specimens right off the ledge. Surfers climb down the cliffs and take on the massive waves, doing flips and speeding through the tubes as on-lookers ooh and aah.
Watching the phenomenal waves crash on the rocks below makes for quite a show in itself. Sunset is also pretty damn beautiful.

The shooting gallery is fun, although the guns don't shoot exactly where you're aiming. We discovered by accident, though, that taking flash pictures makes all of the targets go off, triggering the animatronic dummies to make their accompanying sounds and movements when you hit their bull's eye.
Santa Cruz' Laffing Sal is a bit rougher looking than San Francisco's (in the Musee Mechanique), but she has her own medal proclaiming her a deputized imp.
The inside of Neptune's is pretty campy, but I'm a lover of kitsch. I wish we had something like this down south. Would have made for far more interesting and memorable birthday parties than Chuck E. Cheese.

The only saving grace seems to have been turning the bottom floor into a farmers market -- lots of different foods to try. Most things are a bit costly, however.

Along with Fort Mason, this has one of the best views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. You can also get Ghirardelli Square, the Maritime Museum, the Transamerica Pyramid, and Coit Tower in one picture.

Capital's pretty good. The more people you bring, the more items you get per person for the meal deals.
Walking to the bathroom was fascinating. Had to walk through the kitchen, passed boiling pots and a chopping block covered in blood.

There's plenty of dim sum to choose from, and it made for some nice snacking while walking through downtown.
Only thing is, almost NONE of it is warm and has been sitting around for a while. Cold dumplings just aren't as good, especially if they've been previously fried.
Drove to the end to check out the nature center, which had signs all over directing us to another door. As it turned out, despite signs saying they were open 'til 4 p.m., they were closed when we came by at 2. Oh well.
The trails were OK. It was more interesting walking the wooden platforms that went over the water. In winter, we mostly saw ducks.
$5 to drive into the park. If you're looking for some time alone with nature, it's worth it.

On walking in, three different people around desks close to the door shouted their greetings, asking what I was there for today. One lady did everything but hold my hand guiding me to the line and telling me that so-and-so was going to do her best to help me out today.
All I had to do was cash a check, the teller indulged in some small talk about the crazy weather, and I left as employees I walked by yelled out, "Goodbye! Thanks for coming in today!"
It was like doing business in a commercial. Since I didn't open an account, or request a receipt, I guess I just didn't have the same experiences as the 1-star reviewers. I was in and out without any trouble.

Date

Like the other reviewer said, most everything is made ahead of time. Unless you order something obscure or without an ingredient (which you can't do on the outside window), what you're handed has been sitting a while.
They also practice timed refills based on what size drink you ordered. If you get a large, you have 30 minutes to get your one free refill. Less time for smaller sizes, if you get any time at all. The approximate time you ordered is written on your cup.
This is the only place I've ever had trouble paying for something with my debit card. Their machines are beaten, with the number pad cracked from overuse. Both times my card didn't work, they kept giving me the run-around, making me re-slide my card and enter a number, muttering that it didn't work until a manager (the one short lady with the unnaturally high bangs) smugly goes, "Tell her why" to the cashier who'll lean in and give some excuse about me not having any money.
It ends up just wasting time and making the 20 people behind me upset that they couldn't get their cold Super Stars fast enough.
If you're a commuter and you either took the bus or don't want to lose your parking space, but still want to eat on campus, there are better places a short walk around the corner.
