Urban Farmer Restaurant
Category: Steakhouses
Neighborhoods: Southwest Portland, Downtown
I have been to Urban Farmer for a weeknight happy hour, but not yet for dinner. The group I was with all agreed that the drinks were well made, the cheese selection (we got the $25 assortment) was fun to try out and talk about, and the desserts were delicious. I would not, however, recommend the oysters.
The decor is a pleasant fusion of '50s style and '00s possibilities -- an assortment of glassed-in squares and stacked horizontals. The plates and silverware were well-designed and well-matched (Urban Farmer is full of little visual grace notes). The view from the windows facing Morrison Street is a small thrill: Pioneer Courthouse Square is worth seeing from above.
Like Chad R., I don't think I'd want to be at Urban Farmer on a weekend, but I will certainly be back on a weeknight, and it goes on my list of "places to take visiting parents".

Glowing Greens
Category: Mini Golf
Neighborhoods: Southwest Portland, Downtown
$9 for 18 holes of miniature golf in a skyscraper basement downtown. If you're an adult and going here, I recommend a certain level of pre-existing inebriation (but not so much that they won't let you in). The piratical decor is a trip, and the 3D glasses are worth the dollar.
My main complaint about Glowing Greens is that their hole layouts are so cheesy. Every hole is a minimal variation on an uninteresting theme. By the time you get to the 18th hole, the humor of the decor will have worn off, your buzz will have worn off, and you will be bored with the golf. This is not necessarily a place you'll want to visit a second time.
So maybe go nine holes once, just for the experience. Oh, and hope you don't wind up behind a group of 15 high schoolers.

Bluefin Sushi Bar

Neighborhoods: Hollywood, Northeast Portland
Every slab of raw fish we tried was outstanding, especially the albacore (which I don't usually like). The rolls were original and magnificent. I barely touched my soy sauce -- nothing needed it.
I can't speak to the quality of anything else on the menu, but if you like sushi, you have got to come here and try the nigiri and the rolls.

Now I go to Laughing Planet for their smoothies, which are tasty, healthy, and TOO SMALL.
You should go to Laughing Planet if you like a relaxed ambiance, enjoy well-mixed organic food, and don't mind slow service.

I recommend, though, that you bring something heavy to hold down the napkin while you're biting into the sausage; otherwise, plan to walk back to the grill and ask for another napkin.

Pace Setter Athletic
Categories: Shoe Stores, Sports Wear
Neighborhoods: Woodstock, Southeast Portland
It's amazing how distracted I've been lately.
As always, the folks at Pace Setter were helpful and attentive. They pointed out where the structure of my old shoes had finally failed from overuse -- make sure you bring your old shoes with you when you come to Pace Setter! -- and explained how the model of shoe they recommended was sturdier at those points of failure.
Allow me to close this review with a plea: Folks, if you walk a lot, do not go 18 months between buying new walking shoes. Just do not do it. Go to Pace Setter every six months, bring $100 for the shoes, and let them take care of you.
Dank? Yes. Aged bricks? Yes. Beer? A wide and intriguing selection. Crappy bar food? Yes. Easy-going vibe? Yes. The waitresses are a little skinny by Ohio standards (and people in DC need to learn how to dress down), but I'll let that pass.
We had a great time and I would have given the place five stars but for the fact that of the six beers I asked for from their beer list, they had only three actually in stock.

Belmont 34 Grocery
Category: Grocery
Neighborhoods: Southeast Portland, Belmont
What they sell is mostly odds 'n' ends -- for example, yes, they have nacho cheese Doritos, but most of the other chips they sell are off-off-brands. Chances are that they will not have exactly what you are looking for, but they will have a close substitute that you can buy at prices comparable to what you would pay at a supermarket. I would not, however, advise subsisting on a diet composed solely of the food you could buy here. Four out of five doctors would agree, and that fifth one has been disbarred.
They sell wine, which is always a plus in my book (and real wine, not fortified crankcase oil). They also have WW and Mercury racks just inside the front door.
The floor is chipped and uneven, and the decor in general is dingy, but I'd rather have low prices than polished trim.
If you live in Belmont, check this place out!

Once you get past the irony of seeing "Heartbeats" in the name of a diner where reading the menu will clog your arteries, you'll find that the food here is nothing special by restaurant standards, but a strong cut above anything else you can get in the Lloyd Center food court. The service is usually friendly and quick. The dining area is clean and relatively quiet and comfortable.
I would not advise going out of your way to eat here, but when I'm hungry and I'm in the Lloyd Center Mall, this is where I go.
