My Wife and I headed in around 8:30am on a Sunday, it was mildly busy - and smelled wonderful. The owner seated us, and offered us a free mini-donut hole sampler (yum).
I ordered up their huevos rancheros, and it was simply fantastic, and not too overwhelming/heavy (which I like). The beans we're cooked perfectly and the avocado was a great touch...I wish I could have eaten 2 orders!
We also ordered a BIG maple bacon donut which is friggin amazing - honestly this is the best sweet with a cup of coffee...salt/sweetness from heaven.
Service is great, atmosphere is spot on, and the location is right in the heart of Downtown Historic Core life (5th and Main).
If you haven't been to the 5 cent / Nickel Diner GO...you won't be disappointed. We had a great Sunday breakfast experience.

Church & State
Category: French
Neighborhood: Downtown
To frame the meal, my Wife and I worked late, and we ended up arriving at 9:58pm (literally 2 minutes before they cut off new patrons) pheeew!
We sat at the Bar b/c the place was packed (which we actually prefer at some places), and started to peruse the NEW Chef's menu - and boy has it changed from the opening week!
This new menu is much more Authentic French Gastronomic than the previous Chef and I was excited to say the least - the quality of ingredients and simplicity of the meals was amazing.
My Wife had the Mussels (huge portion w/ perfect Bread dipping sauce) and I had the Steak Frites (Petite Portion was perfectly cooked), we shared the Frizee salad as well (OMG it's to DIE for!) truly the Latin "esse" of what a Frizee should be.
This meal was a 180 degree turn from the debacle we experienced opening week (2x with poor results)...I can tell you when I woke up this morning I was THINKING about when we could go back (we may return tonight in fact, for a encore.)
Seriously Church and State has STEPPED UP THEIR GAME - and it shows in everything they do...if you haven't been in a while GO, and if you are a fan already, I completely understand why.
Also, the Bartender Michel (french pronunciation) is awesome, and very knowledgeable - he makes KILLER drinks - he truly is a Artist behind the Bar.
Cheers,
Jeremy

We've been to Church and State 2x now...it's getting better, but they really need to learn about consistency.
The Steak Frites are great, as long as the waiter remembers to serve it warm...the Fraize salad is pretty good as well, but again the service was very underwhelming.
This place can be so much more, but they need to step up the quality control. Honestly my Wife ordered the Mussels, but the portion was WAY too small.
I'm not a 'big portion' person, for my Wfife tho this wouldn't fill her up either.
I think there are a lot of opening pains, for Church and State....but I am confident from their experience and other eateries that they can pull it together in time.
Concerning Rumor: The owner fired the head chef recently - gulp.
Best,
Jeremy

Yxta Cocina Mexicana
Categories: Food, Restaurants
Neighborhood: Downtown
It's phonetically pronounced: "eek-sta"!
Upon arriving we were greeted by the staff and loved the open air feel and ambiance. The décor is modern Mexican and very well put together, comfy leather seats and booths, big and bright Flatscreen at the bar (great ambiance).
We started off with the giant Guacamole appetizer, and also requested additional homemade tortillas to drench in Avo-goodness (yum). My Wife ordered the Chicken Enchiladas served with a homemade Tomatillo sauce - she said they were amazing! I personally ordered the Skirt Steak with a cheese enchilada - smothered in sauce and served with homemade black beans, I was literally in Mexican Steak Heaven!
Just when we thought we were finished and stuffed, the waiter recommended the Chocolate and Kahlua Flan (OMG-r u serious?) - nuff said, we had to order it! Truthfully, it was one of the best Flans I have ever had "." - also it is enough for 2 to share ;)
- Would we go back? In a heartbeat
- Did we enjoy the food and atmosphere? Hell yes
- Would we recommend to fellow Yelpers? OHHH YEAH!
P.S.: They have amazing margharitas and tequila selections!!
What a great meal - seriously this place is a gem! Just what the neighborhood needed! No more going to Boyle Heights for a good Mexican Meal!

Parking is free and validated, so don't 'sweat' driving around in circles looking for a spot (the area is notorious for difficult parking).
It's a family run operation, with personal service and attention to detail (that's important to me, as I am picky about my clothes).
Check them out, you will be pleased.
4 Stars.
My good friends who are local "Austin'ites" swear by this place, and I too agree it's "good" - but it ain't Pats, or Ginos (authentic Philly cheese steaks).
I would have given them 4 stars if the tables were clean, unfortunately we had to wipe it down ourselves.
Enjoy!
After experiencing the amazing food, atmosphere, friendly service - I can honestly say it was the best darn BBQ I have ever eaten. We even brought a 10lb Brisket + BBQ Sauce back to Los Angeles (it simply was THAT good).
The location is a literal 'compound', and don't forget to BYOB (which is awesome - IMHO) and enough parking for the entire extended family.

Rudy's Barbershop
Categories: Barbers, Hair Salons
Neighborhood: Downtown
Know: It's not a fancy Rodeo or Hollywood Boutique - Rudy's is minimalist and edgy, but they use only top notch B&B (bumble & bumble) products (which says a lot). I've never had a bad experience in over 3 years and multiple Rudy's locations.
Honestly, it's the best $24 cut in town ($29) with wash - staff is always friendly too.
Check it out!
Went here for Lunch one afternoon, and sat at the Pizza Counter (where they make all the Pizzas), let me tell you, what a delight to watch (try it out if you can - no ressies required).
We watched the Chef staff who were so detailed, make sure the dough, crust, sauce, toppings, etc. were meticulously perfect - each a work of art. From Clams, to Prosciutto, Truffle Oil, Figs, to Edible Flowers you can get almost any gourmet combination imaginable at Mozza.
They also have a great selection of local micro-brews and premium production beers (Yay!) along with a comparable selection of great wines served by the quartina/bottle (Yay x2!).
I think Pizzeria Mozza is a delightful culinary experience - and if you love gourmet pizzas then, it's a place you cannot miss!

Honestly I'm torn, I love their Breakfast, and Dinner - what is a torn Downtown Yelper to do!
Answer: Go twice as often.
The owners are awesome, and their desserts are divine.
Cheers!
