Ours was a couple months old, so we had to run the password hint gauntlet, figuring it out after a few tries (not sure about the Dangerfield reference). The doorman was very cool about it. I suppose if you give a doorman something fun to do they will be in a better mood. But it was fun and it sent us into the bar in a good mood.
We got there around 11pm on a Saturday and had no prob snagging a table for 5. High marks for chill vibe and pretty decent music but needs to have cheaper drinks to make the 5 star grade. Still, I'll definitely go back.

Try the following and you will certainly agree:
Nonfat (or regular if you choose) Peanut Butter Blender.
Vitamin add-in of choice (I use total)
Add Carob (or chocolate if you choose)
1/2 the normal amount of banana
Add Strawberry (or Blueberry if you like it a bit richer)
It is pure smoothie glory. I think I might drive up to SB right now to get one.

On a hot tip from my boss (who eats at Sushi x2 three times a week) I forwent the omakase and ordered the $24 premium sushi. I greatly prefer to pick my own order of consumption (something that has always bothered me about LA-omakase). Chef special is great, but give me the fish that's best and I'll eat them the way I want. This is essentially what the premium is.
At $3 per piece, I want some damn good fish. This was definitely some damn good fish. The unagi was perfectly tender and tasty, NOT slathered with teriyaki. Ebi was perfect, saba (not my fave) was delish, marinated maguro bomb, and chutoro freakin fantastic. On top of the 8 big pieces, the set comes with an 8 piece chutoro roll that was slightly loose and perfectly balanced. Figure $6 for the roll alone and you're down to almost $2 per nigri. Wow!
I don't know if I can really justify a $24+ lunch all that often. When I am the boss I'll eat here thrice weekly as well. But for the time being, I bet I can make it down Bev dr. for a little raw Tokyo love at least once a month.

Vendome Wine & Spirits

Neighborhoods: Beverly Hills, West Los Angeles
While sometimes it seems way too hard to find a good CHEAP deli sub in this town, Vendome is a bastion of of deliciousnous amongst the overpriced jewish delis and the painfully boring national chains. A 12" cost $5 and change and can be customized to your hearts content. The Turkey with the works is my choice but the Guadalupe Chicken is the hot bomb as well. Some of the small round sandwiches are bueno also (particularly the Turkey Capri with creamy havarti), but it seems like you get a bit less food for your $4.29. My only complaint is that some of the specialties do not have a foot long option. Extra points are scored for the bananas on hand and chip choices a plenty.
Skip Subway - hit up the Ven-dizzle. Don't worry, the dust is only on the old liquor bottles, not the tasty sandos.

After reading so many 5 star reviews here I was expecting a bit more from my breakfast. My breakfast burrito was good, better than average even - but not toe tappingly good. The coffee was great (Vita - Seattle, duh) but the OJ was so-so. The most original thing about the menu was the rock-inspired names, not the dishes themselves. Also, It was a bit chilly inside (thought certainly not because of Steph - my warm and personable server who fixed my wobbily table without even being asked).
It was a solid, inexpensive meal, but not the out of body experience some Yelpers seem to have tripped on.

The big chicken salads are great and the curry chicken sandwich is pretty good - but my sandwich of choice is the Belwood Breast of Turkey (I highly rec adding cranberry). At less than $7 (the more expensive $10 sandwiches come with a mediocre side dish), this is one of the tastiest sandwiches on the lunch strip. The great lunch crew is always in a good mood as well, even if you have to ask twice for ice water.
I can't vouch for the baked goods, but the turkey with cran is definitely worth 4 stars in my book.

Hiko Sushi

This is definitely the best sushi I have had outside of Japan. It is all because of one word. TORO. Best Toro I have ever had (including Tsukiji!). We are talking taste explosion. I am swooning just thinking about it.
Any talk of the chef being a hard ass is blown out of proportion. Shinji-san is an incredibly nice man - he just does things his way in his restaurant. My experience is that everyone who works there is great.
Is it expensive? Yes, very expensive. Is it worth it? Hell yeah! I am skipping dinner once a week so I can eat at Hiko once every three months.

Sake Bar Decibel
Category: Bars
Neighborhood: East Village
A hot tip sent me searching for the tiny sign that denotes entrance to this subterranean sake sanctuary. Once inside I was momentarily fooled by the small entrance bar. Do not tarry in small entrance bar. Past the velvet rope lies the traintracks underpass decor of an izakaya that is easily as chill as some of the coolest tokyo spots.
Nothing but impressed by the extensive sake selection - all at totally reasonable prices. I started with my solid standby, Otokoyama, and was served a generous overflowed helping. With such great prices I was able to do what I like best - try a bunch of new things - some hits, some misses, but certainly none were bad. Didn't try any food, but it looked like a standard small selection of some izak faves. Didn't really ask for any recs from the staff, but I saw one waiter chatting with a table with no pretension.
This is the kinda place I would be thrilled to stumble into in Tokyo. I'll be there all the time when I finally make the NYC move.

I was very impressed by the menu. Pretty much any "normal" Japanese dish. Yeah it isn't gourmet, but those aren't gourmet prices. Exactly what I want. Solid.
I love the menu options. Get your don with soba/udon, or save a couple bucks and get a bigger portion with just (very mediocre) miso soup. Many other combo options abound. Nama beer is Kirin and there are plenty of other option. Solid.
Next time I go I am gonna try the curry. I make a mean curry so my standards are pretty high for jp curry. Be warned, my rating could change based on the curry's performance - but for now it is definitely a good 4 stars solid.
