Spence's Bazaar

Category: Shopping

5 star rating

From antiques, to bootleg movies, to rusted old tools no one would want to buy anyway, Spence's has it all. The various vendors to come to ply their wares are interesting in their own right, and it's fun to simply wander around and peruse the selection of gadgets, movies, swords, antique jewelery, and bargain makeup. There is also an auction, a barber, a Farmer's/Amish market, and a pizza place.
Spence's is only open Tuesday and Friday morning, I believe so you have to be a morning person to get to go (which I am not sadly so I rarely make it over there).
Whether you are in the market for some cheap movies (assuredly bootlegged), costume jewelery, old tools you'll never use, or a "Made in Taiwan" sword... or the thousands of other things you can buy, Spence's is definitely a fun place to go...

Laortolana Pizza Restaurant

Decent food, cheap, quick friendly service. Small establishment. I only give it three stars because the food is just okay... nothing to rave about, it'd edible, doesn't taste BAD, and is cooked well. Nothing says "Mmmmm tasty" like chicken fingers that are still half-frozen, and these ones are not.

Oh... and it's La Ortolana...

The sushi here was amazing. Got take-out the other day with my roommate, and we were both really impressed. It's not the best sushi I've had in the city, and it's really expensive, but it's excellent. They also had Fatty Tuna, which I've been having trouble finding here. I'd give them 5 stars, but I think it was slightly over-priced.

The guys here are pretty awesome.
I went into buy a new bag, and the guy I talked to was really nice, and even went and searched around in the back for a tissue for me (it was cold, I had just biked down and had a runny nose).  He also really helped me with my bag selection, because I was unsure of a few things, and he helped me narrow down which one was best for my needs. Very Knowledgeable, like Yoda.. only not tiny and old (and probably less badass).

They have an excellent selection, great service, and are really cool guys in general. I'd highly recommend going here to check stuff out.

Charlestown Navy Yard Baby Pool

I'm specifically reviewing the Baby Pool at the Navy Yard (which itself is a cool area). The Baby Pool is a park at the Navy Yard which is very, very cool. I know about it primarily from doing Parkour there (which it's amazing for). It's has a playground, a grassy area with trees, and then an area that they fill with water in the summer for kids to play in (maybe a foot deep at the most) with a concrete jungle of sorts around it. It's also right on the harbor and has the Navy Yard and USS Constitution museum next door. There is a convenience store and a Finagle-A-Bagel near by, as well as a public toilet. Also for a fun walk you can walk across the locks that let boats into the Charles (I think, I could be wrong on that) to walk over there instead of taking the bus or walk across the bridge. It's a really fun area to go relax at.

My roommate ordered some food from here for us the other day, and I have to say. Awesome. Any place that names a section of their menu "The Danger Zone" makes me a happy, happy man. Further, the fact that the subs in this section have mozz. stick on them makes me an ecstatic man. And it doesn't help that the sub was REALLY good too. I haven't tried anything from there other than their subs, but my roommate likes their pizza too. Plus they are ridiculously cheap. Definitely check it out. On top of that, deliver is ridiculously fast, they estimated 45 minutes for us, for 3 subs, and it took about 20. No where else I know delivers that fast.
Definitely check this place out, especially if you are on a budget. I can not say it enough.

Charles River Bike Paths

One of my favorite bike trails in the entire Boston area, I can ride this for hours and be happy. Plus you can choose to ride near downtown, cambridgeside, or BU, or jump the other direction and end up out near Newton and in Watertown. Riding through the area is usually really relaxing, and you don't have to deal with the idiots that are on the streets in Boston as much (being a biker, I have to deal with not only pedestrians but traffic, people parking in bike lanes, etc etc). It's a nice break from riding through streets of traffic just to get off a street, just hop across Storrow Dr. and start biking, and you only have to deal with traffic if you are biking outbound from the city and start crossing the bridges.

Gimbel's Liquors

Oh Gimbel's, you silly store. One of the closer liquor stores to my apartment, I'm here... infrequently. The staff is nice, to most people, and helpful, but they are just a tab overpriced. The beer is on average, although you can get it cheaper, but the liquor here is at least 2 bucks more than Marty's, Blanchards, Brookline Liquors, etc. While they do deliver... honestly I'm not that lazy. Honestly I'll deal with the walk down Comm. Ave. instead of over-paying by 3 bucks for a bottle of Jameson.

Chansky's Market

Chansky's amuses me. While being close to my apartment, and having decent beer prices, other than that they are fairly useless. Their wine selection sucks, and their actual groceries are overpriced. Basically go here for beer and nothing else.
Humorous story here as well. I was opening a cooler to grab a twelve pack of beer and a six pack of Twisted Teas perched precariously on the top shelf slipped and landed, shattering, a quarter of an inch from my foot. Probably would have hit me in the head too if I'm not quick like that. While this doesn't change my opinion of the store honestly, watch out when you are opening up their beer coolers.
Considering this and Gimbel's are the two closest places that sell beer to me, and Gimbel's is a bit overpriced, I definitely still shop at Chansky's... just don't buy anything but beer here.

In Your Ear Records

The only reason this gets 4 stars is because the Comm. Ave. location is better, honestly I'd give this one 5 stars too, but I want there to be a difference.
That said, IYE is amazing. This location is my second favorite vinyl shop in the Boston area, beat out only by the other location. They have tons of vinyl, and the first time I went in I was very lost trying to find what I want because is seems very disorganized, but after spending a little time in the store I realized it's actually very organized, just oddly, so it was really easy to find stuff I was looking for (which they almost always seem to have) once I figured out their system. The staff are extremely friendly and knowledgeable, and are just really cool guys over all. Being a hardcore audiophile I can spend hours in a vinyl shop, and IYE is one of the few that even after being in there for 2-3 hours I still find one more album I want to buy before leaving. Definitely the place to go for vinyl in Boston.
